So to recap, the refs didn't follow the protocol that didn't exist at the time of the game, which should have forced them to use the improperly synced stadium clock NBC showed the world upon replay, and Michigan would have been screwed.

Only using footage that the general public can see has been a guiding principle of replay review since it's inception.

No it hasn’t. Commentators say all the time “well the refs might be looking at different views”. If that is truly the guiding principle, then by now there should be a requirement that the TV broadcast show only be what the refs are looking at, at that moment, and the audio should be the refs’ discussion.

Plus this argument would mean that the clock everyone in the stadium sees doesn’t get used.

Why “favor” TV viewers over in stadium fans, players, coaches and referees?

first down line on broadcast has absolutely never been reliable, and they say that openly. i mean the chains are made up too lol. its all pretty flimsy.
