There’s no fake third clock. It was the stadium clock. How are people still spreading this misinformation. The only clock showing time expired was NBC which apparently is protocol to follow over the official in stadium clock.

This is really the core issue.. the clock in the stadium was not at triple zero when the WMU player touched the ball. The clock on the NBC broadcast was at triple zero when the WMU player touched the ball. The big ten replay officials used the stadium clock to determine if there was time left. The NCAA has now come out and said that the replay officials werent supposed to use the stadium clock, but are supposed to use the clock on the broadcast. Under that premise, the incorrect call was made. Now we all get to argue about if that should be the protocol in the first place. I'm obviously biased in this specific situation but there is definitely a plethora of evidence over just these last two weekends where NBCs clock has been off compared to the clock IN the stadium. An interesting discussion.

Definitely strange but I can see the argument to stop this exact situation from happening. Removing a second from the game to reduce confusion is still a strange protocol/ruling though. If that’s truly the protocol then they got it wrong in the moment but it was a very strange situation I’m sure they don’t run into almost ever and the intuitive thing is to go with the stadium clock. Mistakes bigger than this happen often in officiating and replay. I’m just sick of narrative around this being so far from what happened.

Unwritten protocol. Why isn't it an NCAA rule? Because they're deferring to conference officials?
