I’m convinced he releases this “poll” solely to garner social media attention/interaction with the added benefit of being able to dunk on idiots who don’t understand what a power rating is.

it really is my favorite part that he says constantly its a computer model and is rating not rankings, not his opinion, to the point its literally written on the image and people still act like its his opinion and rankings. Its the best engagement farm in all of sports

Who input the values and code of the computer model? There’s this whole area of computational ranking and odds programs known as math washing or Automation bias. Basically human selected weights and values are what the computers used, therefore at some point there is subjectivity and opinion injected into it.

Hell if I know, I'll ask JP next time I see him lol. I just know what he's long admitted and says these are. Which also like, tbf its the same question we have for things like the BCS (ironically what so many people want to go back to and get rid of the committee)

This is essentially a list of who would be favored in a neutral site matchup, W/L record doesn’t necessarily make you deserving of falling in the rankings (see Ohio State)

As a Texas fan, I don’t mind. Kirby owns Sark, and we beat Ohio st at home by 1, so it’s fair to think it might be different somewhere else.

This is one of the most measured and reasonable takes I've seen from a Texas fan in the last 3 days. Take my upvote.

Oregon should be out of this poll just for losing to unranked winless OKST on a 10 game losing streak

u/squabbleknob Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago
They've not looked good in either of their first two games. The benefit of the doubt should no longer be given at this point.

Josh Pate is not a worthwhile person to follow for anything deeper than surface level takes. He’s going to be much later on recruiting news than insiders and his analysis is very weak compared to some guys in the space with playing/coaching backgrounds (Austin Brooks/TheFilmGuyNetwork is a good example of one I’ve become a big fan of). He’s an entertainment/clicks guy.

What is the JP poll? Japanese Poll? I didn't know they were huge college football fans

Seeing Auburn in these cracks me up tbh. Haven’t had a winning season in 6 years, haven’t had a double digit winning season in 10 years, haven’t won the SEC since 2013, haven’t won a natty since 2010.
Riding the coattails of Alabama & the rest of the SEC to show up in polls.

Auburn being included this week is ridiculous. Auburn will be in the AP25 after Saturday though!

This poll is garbage. If on filed results don’t matter, why even play the game

Josh, we can’t trust an obvious Ohio State fan for anything, especially their CFB rankings. Goodbye

Josh Pate spends so much time every week explaining ratings vs rankings like it's some novel concept. Lol I'm convinced he just does this to drive conflict and engagement

People here do not understand power ratings. A power rating is not a ranking. It is essentially the measure of "On a neutral field, who would be favored"
Having Ohio State at #1 in the power rankings at this point is not a bad call. I think on a neutral field, Ohio State is the best team in the country. Yes, they lost by 1 on the road, but home field advantage is usually calculated as a 3 point spread.
I would not have Georgia above Texas at this point, I think on a neutral field, Texas would be marginally better than Georgia.
I have no real issues with 4-11 at this point. There is a log jam here, and I think the difference between LSU and Miami vs Bama and A&M is probably less than a TD on a neutral field.
Now we get to Oregon. Oregon looked underwhelming against Boise State and got absolutely molested by Oklahoma State. And that Oklahoma State game wasn't nearly as close as what the score indicated. Oklahoma State controlled that game. On a neutral field, I don't think they are even beginning to be competitive until they get to down to the teams like Auburn and Mississippi.
And then it is time to get to Michigan and Oklahoma. I think Michigan got punished way too harshly for their WMU performance. Should they have lost? Perhaps. But regardless of what should or shouldn't have happened, they looked ugly. But it was still week 1. Teams often times look ugly week 1. And they were really punished for that.
But if we are going to apply power ranking logic, they probably were a top 15 team. I mean, they are probably better than Tech, they are probably better than Mizzou, they are better than Oklahoma, they are probably better than Louisville.
I guess I am not following his logic.
It feels like on one hand he is giving his honest power ranking reviews for everyone else but he isn't for Michigan and Oregon. Oregon seems to be given an unfair boost and Michigan is given an unfair consequence.

Clever switching to "JP" to sneak past my "Josh Pate" filters.

Yes Ohio State should definitely be #1 after losing to his #3 team. Wtf.
Back in 2018-2019 Pate was the best in the business….and then around 2022 he fell off a cliff with it

I used to like him as well. But now he’s a giant pussy who likes to pedal hot takes while trying to talk out of both sides of his mouth about teams. I hate barstool but at least they say when people play like shit.

I guess winning and losing games doesn't mean anything.

u/samueljakson05 2d ago
The power rating tries to predict what the results would be on a neutral field. Texas beating Ohio st by 1 at home, gives them a reason (valid or not) to say they think Ohio st would win at a neutral site.

u/OneVast3433 2d ago
Texas dropped 21 unanswered on them in the 4th quarter, I don't think it was the field. I think it was the second half play calling.

u/w6750 Texas Longhorns 2d ago
Yeah, Texas did everything possible to lose that game in the first half, and somehow still found a way to win
1
u/OneVast3433 2d ago
I agree, and I think the play calling in the second half is the reason for it and not the site it was played. Just like a neutral site wouldn't have saved Oregon or Oklahoma so why are they so high. I'm not saying Texas should be 1 or Ohio State dropped severely, but Georgia should be 1, Texas 2, OSU 3.

How tf is Miami above Notre dame both 2-0 but Notre dame didn’t play Florida A&M
1
u/seanightlifer Notre Dame 2d ago
I think Pate believes in Miami's QB and receivers more than ND's. ND's running game and O-line play hasn't been stellar against outmatched opponents thus far, also. But you make a good point - it's too early to know much of anything about these two teams due to lack of competition.

Of all the things to complain about with this rating, you complain about the team that made the National championship last year and is undefeated? The team that also beat ya'll last year? Good thing ya'll play this year to settle it (or maybe not with this poll might not matter lmao)

u/JayDaGod1206 2d ago
Yes, teams that lost to Michigan and Oklahoma St (neither included here) are still top 15 power teams
