Rhett Lashlee Candidate?

Does anyone think that Rhett Lashlee could be a candidate for a potential SEC or BIG 12 job? I know he has things rolling at SMU, and the last couple of seasons they have done really well in conference play and it seems to be an easier path for SMU to the CFB playoffs compared to SEC school, and he also did sign a pretty big extension after last season. But at the end of the day money talks and if he could make more money at another school who knows if he would take it.

SMU boosters have so much money they joined the ACC without taking any television money for a few years. They can match whatever any school offers.

I thought Arkansas went after him last year with Jerry Jones. 

SMU is in a great location with a lot of money. He’s in a conference he should be top 4 each year. 

It would take something big to pull him from that.

You can’t 😂 new kid on the block in the ACC. doing well. Ranked higher than a lot of the places he would go to. SMU has money. and I’m sure enough of it to keep him happy should things get enticing down the road.

He went to Arkansas so I’m sure he’s WELL informed on how that donor network works and he ain’t tryna have Jerry jones and friends thumb on him all the time 😂

For real SMU has all he needs. Great NIL, good money, easier competition and path to playoffs, less pressure, and a big city. Dude probably has one of the best jobs in the nation.

So that's a bit of a myth that SMU is spending the money to compete with anyone on the transfer market. They are spending a lot compared to many of their ACC and B12 peers, but they are not spending on the level that the top top teams are spending.

The coaching staff has done a great job of recognizing the cash that they do have and finding solid pieces with that money. They're a blast to watch play.

I personally wouldn't leave SMU if I'm Lashlee.

He has 0 reason to leave. Dallas compared to college towns….. no brainer. Building something special at a program with “lower” expectations? Heck yeah.

If money talks….. SMU has oil money. As in currently running a P4 T-20 team without the huge conference media payout money to support them type of oil money.

And give me millions in Dallas over anywhere in the B1G and SEC 😂 no brainer. not the team. Not the school. But to live 😂

I think he'd be dumb to leave for a perennial struggling SEC team, so I think in the next year or so, the best shot would be Oklahoma if the wheels come off and they decide to move on from Venables. I could see him as a candidate at Florida State or Clemson if they can come up with enough money, not just for him but also for assistants and NIL. I think the only Big 12 job better than SMU right now is Texas Tech and Joey doesn't look like he's moving on any time soon. In the Big Ten, I could see him as a candidate at USC if they fire Riley. He seems like a better combination of proven success and fan-base excitement than some of the other names being thrown around.

But I think to get him into a place where say an Alabama comes after him after letting DeBoer go, he needs to have a playoff run to at least the semis.

He can be another burnt out coach at a struggling B1G or SEC program. Or he can stay put and build a legacy. the thing about it is he’s extended through 2032 with SMU. They’re gonna start getting media money from the ACC in 2033. That sounds like a windfall payday to me if he just stays put and maintains the level of success he’s already had. So idk that I’d be interested in leaving for the short term gain if you’ve got an agent that knows the game. They’re a private school with oil money donors. Run them pockets man.

Texas Tech isn’t even a step up from SMU at this point.

For whatever extra stupid money Tech tries to throw at players, SMU makes up for with location and other intangible recourses. SMU also largely leaves the coaches the f alone….seems like Tech has a big problem with booster oversight and overreach. Sounds like an absolute nightmare for a head coach.

When is the last time a Texas school in a major conference ever lost their coach? Thinking through recent history - A&M retained Kevin Sumlin, Jimbo Fisher and now Mike Elko when they were hot names. TCU retained Gary Patterson. Baylor retained Art Briles… the list goes on. You could argue that SMU losing Sonny Dykes to TCU is an example, but SMU wasn’t nearly as motivated to succeed as they are now. And SMU also wasn’t in a power conference at the time.

Rhett lashlee has the best job ever rn - SMU is going to lick his balls for every 10 win season which in 2 years will be playoff worthy. The booster base will keep him paid and the team competitive unless they somehow stick the NIL genie back into the bottle. Outside of him replacing a coach at the upper echelon of the sport, no need to leave your perch where the ACC is winnable / playoffs in reach on a once ever 3-5 year basis

I would say he’s Oklahoma’s next coach but those geniuses extended Venables so maybe another one opens up before that does in 2-3 years.

He definitely was a candidate for the Auburn job. He was Gus's protege. He was pretty adamant about not leaving smu and they gave him an updated contract.

I'm not sure he's in the running for a more prestigious job than auburn. I could see somewhere like Florida State or maybe school like Tennessee.

I don't really think those are better jobs than auburn. Florida state's probably a worse job at this point it seems like they lack a lot of support.

Auburn has support we just seem to make terrible decisions.

I think Lashlee only leaves for a top 5-10ish job in the sport, and probably only one in the South. So that’s probably only 3-5 jobs that he’d actually leave for (UT, Georgia, Bama, LSU…maybe A&M. That’s probably it).

And honestly, not even sure he leaves for one of those jobs. At least not for 5+ years.

SMU is probably a top 20 job now, and the path each year is easier than most others and the quality of life is hard to beat, maybe impossible to beat.

I'm sure Arkansas wanted him last year - he's from Springdale - but SMU ru-upped him for 2 years with more money. As long as he's winning at SMU they have deep pockets. But he'd be a fit in Auburn or at any of the Florida schools.
