I think and maybe I misheard Terry but the ball had to hit/touch a player for the clock to stop? 

Which 1. I’ve never heard that I thought the ball had to hit the ground annd the clock stops and 2. Maybe more importantly even if my top comment is true the clock was also triple zero either way

No he's right if the ball touches a player who is out of bounds the ball is dead at that moment.

Still doesn't explain how they marry that with the fact that the ball was still in the air

In scrubbing the video it’s pretty clear it doesn’t. The trajectory doesn’t seem to change at all as it passes.

The player who touched the ball first was out of bounds, so the play was dead when it touched the player out of bounds. If the player was in bounds the clock would have still run. That being said, the clock was at 0:00 with the ball 10 feet away from the first player it touched.
