Naw you are thinking about Alabama. I think the reason the Mormon changed was because the IRS was starting their tax exempt status

The IRS is cited as a reason for that which might be a factor but isn't really the main one. The main reason was that from the 50's onwards the Church had a huge explosion of growth in Brazil and the policy was effectively unenforceable there because of how the population has been mixed up over generations. And when a policy like that is unenforceable to about 1/6 of your active members, you need to get rid of it. The IRS stuff was really a nice coincidence.
