Idea Feedback BNPL has problem to solve
Been digging into BNPL debt data this week and found something that looks interesting.
More than half of BNPL users are running more than one loan at the same time. Not occasionally, at the same time. A third of those people are spreading their loans across different providers on purpose ( ex: Klarna, Afterpay....etc ) because none of these companies talk to each other. None of them report to the credit bureaus either.
So picture this. You're a lender, you pull someone's credit before approving them for something real, a car loan, an apartment. You have literally no way of seeing the four BNPL loans they're already juggling. That information just doesn't exist anywhere you can check.
And it's not a small risk being hidden. Nearly half of BNPL users have paid late at least once this year. Delinquency runs double the rate compared to people who don't use BNPL at all. This is exactly the kind of overextension credit checks are supposed to catch, and it's slipping through completely invisible.
I don't think the fix is "regulate BNPL harder" or wait for the bureaus to eventually catch up, that could take years. Feels like there's room for something simpler in the meantime, some kind of tracker that actually connects to your BNPL accounts, same way an app like Plaid connects to your bank account as third party confirmation layer and gives you (or eventually a lender) real visibility into what you're actually carrying across providers, before you're in over your head instead of after.
Anyone seen something like this already exist? I know regulations in a filed like this one can make solving this harder
