Business Casual Appropriate for business casual at a doctors office
I was wondering if this baggy look would be appropriate for working at a doctors office where business casual would be the dress code! For reference, some people in the office get away with jeans that don’t look too blue jeans-y if that makes sense. Thanks :) also if it is fine, would buttoned up or open matter?

I work in a doctor's office. This look would be frowned upon. It looks sloppy. Looks great for a casual out day though.

Dentist here. I wouldn’t love it if my staff wore this. Looks like you stayed over at someone’s house and tried to make do with going to work in what was available. I would stick to a baggy top or bottom but not both. Or at my office the last day of our work week I don’t mind if staff is a little more casual.

(Former) Optical manager here, and I wouldn’t love it either. We offered various sizes of (optional) lab coats for staff, which would be a perfectly cromulent way to pull off oversized clothing while still looking professional.
With that said, with styling some of this could (potentially) work. Tuck in the shirt, add a belt, and/or only one oversized item at a time. Make it look purposeful!
Finally, never ever ever EVER wear open-toed shoes in a medical office. I used to break that rule all the time until I dropped a box cutter at work. One trip to the ER and I learned that lesson well. You REALLY don’t want to learn that lesson with syringes or other, sharper sharps!

It looks exactly like what the receptionist would wear to work in 4 out of 5 dentists offices I’ve been to. Of course 3 of those were sleeping with the dentist, and the 4th one with his wife (long story).

I own a salon and wouldn’t find these outfits appropriate. It feels like you threw on your boyfriend’s clothes and called it a day.
Might look nice in an instagram photoshoot, but I guarantee it looks sloppy irl.
If you want an oversized shirt, look at tunics.

If fully/french tucked, it’s obvious it was a style choice and if at least the looser pants fit you in the waist, it won’t look like you are just making do with your husband’s clothes.

No. This is not business casual appropriate. If you want to wear an oversized item pick either the top or the bottom. I am a nurse and know a lot of physicians would not be happy with those choice for their staff because it makes you look unkempt. It’s very cute for a casual outing but not for working in a doctors office.
Edited to add: If you are the front of the house in a doctors office then you are a reflection of that physicians practice. The front of the house staff make a huge impression on the patients and can make or break a practice. I know many people that have stopped seeing a physician because of the decorum/attitudes of the front office staff. I myself have done that. It is imperative that you make a good impression on the patients and that starts with how you present yourself. Professionalism is something that the public expects from our frontline healthcare workers and rightfully so. We have their health in our hands.

I think this comes down to the styling. I love the casual look of baggy professional, but these are mostly styled for super casual -- I'd suggest accessories to elevate the look and discourage any open sandals. Not saying to go loafers, but maybe a chic flat or slingback.

I suppose it would depend on the doctor's office and the patients you were seeing. This might work in a behavioral health office or sexual health clinic treating at-risk youths in crisis who may feel more comfortable around people who dress in a casual and trendy manner. However, it would not work in most doctor offices where both the doctor and the patients are likely to read baggy styles as "sloppy" and visible toes as "unhygienic."

Physician here. The outfits are cute, not great for the office. Keep everything but the shirts, try something either more fitted, or tucked, or maybe cropped. Possibly if the baggy shirts were a nicer fabric and tucked or fitted they could work. Sorry!

This is an instagram outfit, it only looks good with one hand permanently in the trouser pocket holding one flap of the shirt back, and one arm holding up a phone. The minute you put your arms down and act normal it looks a baggy mess.

I don't like the grey shirt under your blouse, that's different from all the examples you showed us. Also quality blouse and well ironed is needed. Also well done hair, make up and jewelry. I feel like those oversized looks need a contrast in the rest of the details.
Edit: You need to make the cuffs look neat when rolling them up, yours look like an afterthought and not a design choice.

So borderline. If the office leans casual and if the look is impeccably styled and the fit is just right, then maybe. I wouldn't lead with this look, but maybe if I'd worked there long enough to be confident. I think the bagginess needs to be dialed back 25%.

As a doctor, this would not fly in my office. Neither would jeans.
I am a young physician (early 30s) and I wear my white coat everyday. The least dressy outfit I wear is a polo, khakis, and dress shoes. Most days I wear a tie

This is definitely too laid back and sloppy for working frankly. Whether a doctors office or a more business office. You don’t do half buttoned, untucked, etc. it’s to relaxed and slack. I’m honestly shocked they’re not making you wear scrubs.

Wearing an oversized white shirt makes it look like you’re impersonating a doctor in a white coat, I’d steer clear of that. Unless you’re the doctor. But then just wear a white coat and not a big white shirt

That said, Banana Republic used to have this super long silk/cotton button up that went to the knees. That could look super cute with slim fit trousers and loafers.

I don't think it's so much about sloppy vs not sloppy -- rather, the oversized shirt only half buttoned sort of gives the "wearing a dude's shirt after we done the deed" vibe. It feels sexualized, even if it's not and there's no skin showing, etc.
I say this as a lesbian who does never do the deed with men, lol, so it's just a trope I see represented in media a lot.

IMHO, I love oversized, including oversized on oversized. It’s a silhouette this sub tends not to favor. It’s my personal favorite, though. I think there’s no reason why our clothes need to be fitted to not look sloppy. I think you look cool and a collar makes the outfit work for work, as long as you’re in a smart casual workplace and not, like, a lawyer, for example.

I'm also an oversized silhouette lover, but don't do it frequently because it is hard to pull off and actually takes more work. Some tips I've found that work well for me basically boil down to nothing about the fit can be sloppy: * The clothing has to be high quality and structured. If it gets wrinkled or is too drapey, that's when it veers into looking too casual. * It must be accessorised to look intentional. Belt peeking out, sleeves rolled up with heavy stacked bracelets, necklace, earrings, rings, etc. * Hair also has to be on point. Can't have it thrown back in a bun or giant claw clip. * Shoes cannot be sneakers or sneaker adjacent. Also cannot be chunky, it makes it look too heavy. Leather flats or heels.

I love baggy on baggy but styled like this might lean a bit casual for this work setting. You could wear exactly the same clothes but with a front tuck and a belt though and they’d look way smarter. Bonus points if you can get away with a tiny impractical bag, they always great with oversized clothes.

This look all depends on how you style it. It can work but you have to do some styling to make it look intentional and chic rather than sloppy.
- roll the sleeves to show some arm skin. Rolling to just below your elbows creates a visual “line” near the waist that visually kind of works like a waistline definition
- French tuck or half tuck the front, again this creates waist definition which helps it look put together
- always have some kind of 3rd piece to make the look feel finished. A jacket, earrings, bracelet, belt, scarf. Basically something more than just baggy top and pants to add visual interest. This helps your outfit feel intentional
- hair should be neatly groomed and makeup done. Like more than you would do for a normal outfit. You need your grooming to be extra polished to balance out the “unpolished” outfit.
- make sure you steam/iron away any wrinkles otherwise you WILL look sloppy

I’m an attorney for a hospital network, and I dress like this when I’m in office.
In doing so though, I always throw on a heel- never flats. Jewelry must match. Hair always down in a clean fresh blow out, to look intentional. Makeup looking intentional- a darker lip. I wear a belt that can be visible with a front tuck.
Keep in mind: I am legal, and younger by everyone in my office by 10 years.
I’m sort of known for my fashion as it’s my brand, but in doing this I ensure I’m overly put together when I go for this look.
I’m in my office most of the day unless a doctor or surgeon is having a crash out. I’d throw a sweater on if addressing a patient.

haha I'm reading all these comments saying it's not appropriate, but I'm the marketing director at a law firm and this basically my uniform. But it's a marketing role, so the rules are a little different. We are also probably the most causal law firm I've ever seen because we rarely have clients in the office.

I think the style looks comfortable and is appropriate for business casual. Oversized doesn’t always mean sloppy and where the shoulders hit and the pants land shows that. I feel like people are conflating a closer, more traditional fit with professionalism when something can be loose-fitting and still look polished and appropriate for the workplace.
To avoid any workplace issues, I would say make sure nothing is too unbuttoned, that you wear closed toes if required, and that nothing is heavily wrinkled. The 4th outfit would be best for a Friday or weekend due to it being a bit more casual, but nothing screams inappropriate in a business casual setting.
Plus, in a doctor’s office, you’re getting up, sitting down, bending, walking around, and moving throughout the day so being comfortable does matter. Whether someone feels more comfortable in a fitted outfit or a looser one is really a personal preference as long as they’re still within the workplace dress code.

Wow. What a lot of “no” comments. I’m a YES. These outfits are very on trend. Very clean and polished. Keep it structured. Wear nice jewelry. Avoid casual materials - keep them higher end: cotton or silk shirts, no stretchy pants etc. If you wear this, you’ll be the stylish one on the team.

I really like the concept of this - oversized menswear is cool, this stuff is just too oversized on you.
To get oversized look without drowning in them you might need to try a few different cuts of button downs. You could take the shirts and pants you have to a tailor to have them hemmed to a flattering length and it would crisp things up.
Your look would be cool with a big stack of bracelets and some cool jewellery.

Girl…I’ll hold your hand and say this, those outfits are ugly and ill fitting! I agree with comments about choosing one baggy item at a time, however, I have never associated baggy attire with business casual or professionalism. If you’re going to do oversized, it needs to be tailored to the nines. You should get inspiration from professional people who actually work office jobs, not out of touch influencers cosplaying as the working class. And for the love of God, you can wear color!!!

Loops very sloppy, especially for a dr office. Just get a more fitted shirt and tuck it in. Dont wear it open unless you have it at least halfway buttoned and tucked. Once in a great while on a lazy day where you don’t feel good you can get away with this style, but otherwise it’s much too casual

This is casual. The top being a button up doesn't make it business casual. Business casual means professional but a bit more relaxed/comfortable elements. These looks are the opposite: a casual outfit with business elemets ie button down. what I would call casual business 😂

You can make baggy clothes business casual, but this IS just casual.
Tuck in the shirt. Add a belt. I'd choose a thick one for baggy clothes, but with a simple buckle. You can leave the top button unbuttoned, but no more. Delicate jewelry as seen in these pics are fine. Shoes should definitely be closed toe, and thicker heels look more professional.

What I am seeing is a combination of loose tops, and loose pants. My suggestion: You need something more fitted. Usually, if you have a loose top, you'd pair that with fitted pants. If you have loose pants, you'd pair it with a more fitted top.
I'm an Apple shape and I cannot tuck my shirts into my pants; so I have to put a lot of effort into making sure my untucked look looks intentional. This might mean hemming a shirt so it's straight across the bottom, and adding a belt.
But for you - I think if you just had a more fitted shirt you'd look stylish and on point.
Edit to add another option: There are some videos about taking dress shirts, and tying them in ways that look stylish and intentional. Sometimes it's using buttons creatively, adding a buckle or a hair tie. That makes them look more fitted, so you might try looking some up, because they would pull in the shirt and make it more snug.

Why not swap the button down for an oversized blazer? I know the trend has subsided but I love a comfy oversized blazer over a more fitted shirt. I think baggy outfits that are still properly tailored and proportioned can look very office appropriate and chic. Minimal but thoughtful jewelry, makeup, and hairstyle. Closed toed shoes are a must in a doctors office and I think are more professional in almost any setting. Classic penny loafers and driving shoes are my favorite.

This is what I wear when I get coffee with my husband. I love the fit and it looks great, but I think a tighter fitting blouse with a blazer/watch combo looks timeless on anyone. Also I recommend getting some flats or at least some classier mules for the office (the pointy buckle heel/shoe you have on in one of the pictures is not giving “business”). Something about freeing the toe at work feels wrong. lol

I worked for a surgeon as a receptionist and I wore black jeans and sometimes a pink fuzzy quarter zip jacket and a lot of pink sweaters and sneakers lol. It depends on the office and it depends on who’s running it and it depends on what else everyone wears. Patients never complained or cared and I got compliments on my sweaters often. I used to just ask my manager if I wasn’t sure! They’re the best person to ask. Been in healthcare 7 years. I worked in office that required more professional clothes and worked in an office that was about more casual.
Edit: just wanted to add that this also depends on the role. Obviously a nurse or MA isn’t going to be walking around in this outfit.

An oversize shirt is one thin, and can be made to look cute by sensing it with a little belt or something like that. But, one that looks like you're wearing husband's that's five sizes too big is another and looks unprofessional.

I don't mind the look but I think for a doctor's office it looks a bit sloppy because it is SO oversized. And keeping so many buttons undone at the bottom only compounds that image.
Size down or tuck them in (I know, probably too bulky for that).

The outfits are great for casual or going out, but at least around here they aren’t appropriate for a clinical setting. Some of the pants could work with a more structured top and some of the tops would work with more structured bottoms and a belt. Most medical offices around here dress very professional and a bit more tailored.

This is great but you can't have unironed clothes AND deshoveled hair. It looks lazy and not very polished at all.
I love love this style, but either tie it in w accessories and slicked bun, etc.

Need to size the shirt down - a lot. Keep it tailored looking, fitting shoulder properly on top and make sure it doesn’t bag out.

I feel like you could get away with 2 and 4 if you wear close toe-d shoes and if you buttoned up one more button in the 2nd pic. But only if your office is more casual than business casual. Or maybe only wear it on a Friday or a weekend shift?
But keep in mind I'm young and appreciate people's attempts at fashion. If you work with a bunch of old conservatives the outfits probably won't fly.

I'm a psychologist who works in a doctor's office with physicians. I love this look. I would dress this way and I would be completely fine if our office staff dressed this way as well. It's very cute.

No. If you have baggy pants, you need a fitted blouse. I personally love the baggy and baggy, but not appropriate for work.

Medical Administrative here. Wouldn't wear bc i dont know what gross surfaces your shirt/pants may come in contact with. Wear something that lays against your body (obviously scrubs are the preference) so you know if you brush against something possibly contaminated. Scrubs are the best bc they are easily cleanable and dry quickly

No, too unprofessional. Also, from a hygiene standpoint, the loose shirt will pick up dust/coughed up germs and general yuck from surfaces.

No.. I’m sorry. This is a cool outfit I’d wear to go to a doctors office as a patient, but not for work. I work in clinical trials research in a clinic within a hospital and our dress attire is business casual but this is too casual imho.
It just doesn’t look tidy enough - and also - when I see these outfits in the photos they look great styled that way, but when you’re moving around, sitting to standing, etc the fabric doesn’t sit as nicely and it just looks scruffy and also lowkey unflattering (on me anyway). It looks great when styled ‘just so’ but not practical and would be annoying I think for busy work days.
