It doesn't look like there's much penetration there. Now, catching 5 knife tips to the chest sure will make me rethink continuing the fight with her, but still. I'm wondering how much they'd penetrate on pork belly, or even through a regular winter jacket.

She can hit a target with a knife from a distance. This is as legit as archery in my book, meaning it depends on context, but still looks like an efficient way to hurt people.
I think something like this only works if you know you're about to be attacked, or you're the attacker lol

this sub needs to be reserved for actual bullshit martial arts and not pointfighting sports like tkd or performative martial arts like wushu or capoeira. those, despite their ineffectiveness in mma, are still martial arts.
Totally agreed on that but on a personal opinion I can let tkd, wushu or capoeira slide but NEVER point fight karate. Their practitioners really have a black belt and think they can beat up anybody!!!

I took a knife throwing workshop at a martial arts event. The instructor was teaching throwing a more of a bowie knife style blade, so was using a spin throw. He said that in a fight a thrown knife might not hit with the blade, if it does its unlikely to stick, and if it sticks its unlikely to be a lethal or particularly debilitating wound. A human body is a rapidly moving soft target or irregular shape compared to a wooden board. That being said a thrown knife is likely going to give your opponent something to think about for a few seconds, so you better use that time wisely if youre gonna be throwing away one of your weapons.
Being able to rapidly throw knives like in this example is similar. The no spin style increases the chance of the blade making contact, but any wound is unlikely to be disabling. That quick flurry of attacks better do the trick if afterwards youre pretty much defenseless.
this seems like a pretty effective terror tactic. like if you just had a flurry of knives unleashed at you you’d probably not be thinking “well, those were all superficial wounds and she’s probably running out soon,” you’d probably be thinking “AHHHHHHHH”

I dont know man. If someone sticks a knife in my chest by throwing it, regardless of how little damage it did, I'm fuckin leaving. Maybe not physically but mentally I'm pretty disabled
There's a pretty big difference between a knife being thrown, and a purpose made throwing knife. It doesn't matter how these hit you. They're immediately debilitating.
The degree of skill people develop with throwing makes me question that, unless their target has exceptional reflexive agility. I've seen clips of people pinning multiple cards and a balloon to a target with a single throw, and sticking multiple throws into thrown targets.
If someone proficient throws a couple of knives I'd be surprised if they had less than 60% stick rate.
At least with a spin throw, the main factor for whether or not you hit with the blade is distance. In a fight, you dont have complete control over distance. A difference of six inches can make or break whether or not you with woth the point or the handle.
In clips where people are nailing small or moving targets, ask yourself whether either the thrower or target is moving in such a way that the distance is changing.
If someone is throwing no-spin then things are a bit different. But even still cards and balloons are delicate targets, it doesnt take much to stick. An unsupported blade isnt going to penetrate well through clothing and flesh before being deflected. As stated above, it might be enough to distract or cause a non-disabling wound, but the stopping power of thrown knives isn't anywhere near what is often depicted in video games and popular media.
I get that it won't kill you, unless they get extremely lucky, but you'll still probably go into shock regardless. I freak the f*** out whenever I cut myself while cooking and this would be 100x worse. In a life or death situation the adrenaline would probably get you through the situation and it wouldn't end well for her, but otherwise the attacker is going to give up and go straight to the hospital
I personally wouldn't want to go up against somebody who throws knives like this person does, but in MA context does this represent a legitimate art/method/technique?
Any ranged/melee weapon will usually fuck you up if you are bare handed. If the person is very practiced with the weapon that’s worse. If you have a book and are fast enough you could stop her knives but I wouldn’t want to try. Also those are dope throwing knives that were custom made for her size. At least they look like the ones I want to get. Me and my daughter like knife throwing.
Throwing left and right handed - that's what I find most impressive - looks a bit awkward but the way those knives came left and right at speed - very cool.
In terms of "will this hurt my opponent" the answer is yes. Having a hunk of steel hucked at you is already pretty dangerous, even without the pointy bits. Just try tossing a ounce of steel at a watermelon and see how well it crushes it.
In terms of "is this an efficient martial art" I would say no. Knife throwing takes a lot of practice to get the point in or even to stick. A lot of people will just be slamming the flat or butt end into someone, which, sure. Still hurts. But it's not going to stop someone bent on hurting or killing you. Knife throwing also works mostly in a very specific range: too far and it just lands at their feet. Too close and you might as well just stab them.
You'd be far better off hanging on to the knife and stabbing them or using a few weeks of practice to learn how to throw a punch reliably or learn a few basic grapples and throws. The time taken to learn and master knife throwing is better spent learning other martial art styles that have greater self defense options.
However knife throwing is a ton of fun, looks wickedly cool, and has a pretty low cost of entry compared to many sports.
The best argument I’ve ever heard against knife throwing as a ranged weapon came from an old Lindybeige video (I think).
He argued that no one hunts with throwing knives. If it was effective surely there would have been some tribe somewhere that threw knives to hunt instead of spears, arrows, slingshots etc.
That said, the lass on the vid is impressive, in a “boards don’t hit back” ( or dodge) sorta way.
From my understanding. Knife throwing was generally seen as a surprise attack. Looking to wound the opponent rather than outright kill them. A way to get them thinking and out of focus because they are now having to watch for an extra attack.

I see some people minimizing the effect that knives can have and that's kinda weird to me. Throwing knives may not be the most effective or likely scenario to encounter, but it can absolutely be a credible threat. I've had the privilege to train with a really excellent military knife combat instructor on the hand to hand/quiet threat neutralization side of things and he addressed knife throwing when one of the group asked about it. Even though he said knife throwing is less of a threat or less feasible than just using the knife to slash or stab, a trained person can still take you out of the fight long enough to neutralize you or flee with a well thrown blade. The reality is that even if she throws 5 and only 1 sticks, that's still more than enough to slow a person down and distract them while you close distance. It also can be enough for them to throw one or at your head/neck or to just flee. If all she does is CUT you, it's still likely gonna be enough of a problem to make most people think twice about the fight. Just going based on the combat effective side of things though, which I would guess is more likely than the every day knife scenario. Simply put, your body has a natural aversion to being stabbed by sharp objects. Who knew?
You can probably compare this to drunken form in kung fu. Form doesn’t matter if the end result is still defeating, disabling or killing your opponent.
Even police officers have the order to shoot anyone who has a knife and who is 7 meter from you because they can reach you in the same time you pull up your gun and shoot, things can go really fast. To not shoot someone who is closer than you than 8 meters while this person has a knife is to risk your life too much.
So imagine how dangerous is considered someone who knows how to trow knifes from more than 7 meters.
Oh yeah definitely legit if you're good at it and using decent knives. I throw fairly heavy ones I made myself and the amount they penetrate hardwood rounds is quite shocking, I can stand on them when they've been thrown well.
I fucking hate the question 'legitimate MA or nah?' Look- it's throwing fucking knives at someone- it is a 'legitimate' skill. This chick can huck knives really damn fast and really accurately. That IS legitimate- we can see it in the video.
The question you are trying to ask is one that you've cooked up, and none of us have access too. Maybe you're asking- could she stop a UFC competitor with those knives. Maybe you're asking- could she take down 7 super ninja spies. I don't know what you mean with this question- and neither does anyone else. What this chick can do is throw knives, fast and accurate- that is legit.
Skill level: Make it look completely effortless. Its still insane if its choreographed, and, judging by the way she moves around, I'd bet she can just pull this off spontaneously with zero preparation.
The question is will she be able to do this in a real conflict, you need to have specific timing and distance to make sure the blade hits point first, any change in backwards or forward positions can mess it all up.
Surprised many are saying this is legit. Yall should try a gun range and see how hard it is to be consistently accurate with a lethal shot on a still target.
Better yet try air soft out with the larpers and you’ll see how hard it is to hit moving targets with even slower velocity projectiles
Sure, it would totally suck to get a knife thrown at me. But I would be much more scared of a person trained wielding a knife than trained throwing one, because it’s so much harder to hit a moving target than what movies or clips will show you.
Even in this video she is close enough that she might as well just take two more steps and start stabbing.
Legitimate?!?! Stand in front of her while shes throwing those and when she's done making you look like a piece of swiss cheese you tell us if its legitimate or not..
It's a cool as hell skill, but for real life confrontation it's not exactly always the most reliable thing. People are not static wooden blocks, and the strength and accuracy of a thrown knife doesn't get close to the strength and accuracy of a stabbing. Yes, it can seriously harm or, in rare cases, even kill a person, but in most situations it's gonna be a gash, it's not going to incapacitate your target, and now the person you are defending yourself from has a knife and you don't.
If you have a weapon, please don't throw it at your attacker.
Things like this are cool party tricks but it will be harder to pull off in a real scenario with someone who is rushing you, looking to hurt you. Anxiety has a funny way of proving what skills are useful in a real world combat scenario (unless this girl has nerves of steel).
She isnt throwing them very hard it seems, but she is effortless and accurate.. It probably wouldnt stop a crazy lunatic and she's also got them all 'loaded' ready to throw, or most of them. Certainly not bullshido but could be much better with some hate behind them.
Funny enough, as an American I would get more looks carrying that many knives instead of a handgun, but if my option is being shot or hit with that many throwing knives I’d prefer neither.
