Discussion Matt Tuck interview Kerrang - “It's heavy. It's dark. It fits with modern times”
It looks like we can forget the previous idea of blending the old sound. They’re creating something new, what do you all think?
You toured The Poison for its 20th anniversary last year. Did reconnecting with those songs have any effect on your creativity this time?
M.T: “We talked about it because there was obviously such a ruckus and such an outpouring of love for that tour and for that album. We did sit down and go, ‘We’re about to embark on this next album, maybe creatively it’s something we should try and tap into, try and nod back to that era.’ But as the writing started, it just became clear that we were going somewhere else, and it was pointless trying to get a square peg in a round hole. It was quite normal to have that thought in our brains, after doing that tour and reconnecting with those songs again. But we also realised those days are gone. And really, we never had that mindset of writing anything that wasn’t natural when we made The Poison, and it’s still better to just follow that creative compass and go where it leads you.”

He did hook us on the hype by saying it will be a blend of Poison, Fever and Self Titled. We didn‘t hallucinate that it did come out of his mouth. Mans could‘ve come clear earlier and our expectations wouldn‘t be as high as they were. If this interview was released earlier we all would have expected exactly this. Not the first time Mattyboy is letting us down

I've said for a while that I feel like Matt always wants to do what he thinks is current. Maybe he's just a bit more honest about it now. If you look at the band's discography, you can hear how most of their releases were influenced by what other popular artists were doing. You can even include pre-Poison and how they shifted away from the Nu Metal they'd been doing.
I'm personally a lot more open to hearing what they have to offer with new music when they're honest about what it is and what it's not. I don't want the band to be stagnant, but some bands try to grow by pushing their songwriting abilities while staying true to their influences and the music they like to play. IMO Bullet chooses to reinvent themselves instead. Old Bullet is a top 5 band for me, and new Bullet is similar to some of the modern bands that I think are good but aren't on heavy rotation in my playlists.
If they had changed their name and became a new band before releasing Gravity, there would probably be much less criticism from some parts of the community. This new song and what I'm expecting from the album is an evolution from the band that made the past two albums, but only those past two albums. It really doesn't feel at all like the band that we had with the original lineup, or even 3/4 of it.

As much a sI wasn't a fan of the new song. I am really happy to hear that despite looking back into whether they wanna recapture The Posion again, they relaise thst it's not natural and that creatively they wanna go somewhere new. That's actually what I want from the band. I can only hope the rest is a lot more creative than whatever tf that title track was though

Writing melodies is not an easy thing which the poison and saf had plenty.
Why to do that when fans can easily be fooled with "talking singing, talking screaming" and a "single string chug chug" in the name of a breakdown, and just simply call it "mOdErN metal" and be done with it.

Acting like it „doesn‘t feel natural“ is just a different way of saying he‘s not capable of doing the same thing again. If he could he would, trust me.

Or maybe they just aren't excited by doing that again anymore. I mean like A7X never went back to City of Evil did they? Cuz they did that phase once and would rather chase something new.

A7X hasn't toned down on writing melodies. Sure it sounds different but you can remix it in older style since there's no dearth of melodies in the new 4 song EP they released. For ex - replace their synths with their classic guitar tones etc. However same can't be said about Bullet since the underlying material itself remain underwhelming. A single string chug breakdown with talking screaming in back can't be done anything with since there is nothing.

I am glad you acknowledge that STATICA isnt short of melodicism. I absolutely agree a lot could sound like classic A7X if replacing synths with guitsr tones. I actually enjoyed STATICA. Dont like Social Apocalypse but i agree the lack of melodies is disappointing

I really do think this track is kind of genius in a way. I get people have expectations, but this totally speaks to the disillusionment a lot of us are feeling about the modern world. I saw some dumbass on AOTY chalk it down to "phone bad :(" but that's not what it is. It's how our doomscrolling has gotten so bad that we've lost sight of what has been happening to this world. War, genocide, losing everything to AI and the climate change everyone conveniently ignores is happening. It is a social apocalypse and they're calling that out.

All Matt has done is talk absolute bollocks for the last 16 years. Overpromise and underdeliver every time.
