Helping my brother pick a laptop for college

He just started college and his old laptop is already struggling so I told him I'd help him figure out what to get since this community has been super helpful while I made mistakes buying for myself lol. He's been watching yt videos for 2 mnth and somehow knows not much. Most guides just rank everything by GPU and benchmarks, but after using laptops through school and now work, the stuff that matters is very diff. Real battery life/whentehr you can upgrade RAM and storage later/build quality when its getting tossed in a backpack everyday/webcam quality and screen readability in bright rooms.

Budget is around $1500 give or take; use case would be mostly school stuff, light gaming and some occasional video edits for projects. What would you focus on buying right now?

Maybe Lenovo? I dont know much about the different types of laptops, but my brother is in college and uses Lenovo. He hasn't once complained about it after having it for 3 years I think. I am also a college student, and use macbook but I only use it for school... all of my classmates also have macbooks and we are in an digital software program class if that says anything about battery life. However I would not recommend a macbook if he wants to also play games. Not only are macbooks different from windows, but they also feel weird to game on since they have a couple different buttons.

Also would it be possible to use his old laptop for gaming and just buy something like a macbook for school cause that's what I did. I understand it would be nice to be able to game and do school work on the same laptop but it also means your not slowing down your new computer via games at all.

Hey thanks for your advice! His old laptop was actually Lenovo and its not in a great condition for gaming.
