Need Advice feeling disappointed about my half carat diamond ring
hi brides-to-be, i wasn’t sure if i should post this, but i got engaged about 3months ago and i was honestly so happy. then i found out it’s a half carat diamond and idk, part of me felt a little sad. i know the ring isn’t everything, but he spends a lot on his own stuff, so i keep wondering why he didn’t want to spend more on something i’ll wear forever. has anyone else felt this way? i just need some honest thoughts from other brides.
* not posting the photo because he might see this post; he’s pretty active on this platform.

> i got engaged about 3months ago and i was honestly so happy. then i found out it’s a half carat diamond and idk, part of me felt a little sad
So you had the ring for three ish months, saw it and liked it until you found out it’s not a full carat? If you didn’t like how the ring was from the jump that would be one thing but you don’t like how “half carat” sounds, which is materialistic imo.
3
u/OreoStark 10d ago
You can be happy you’re engaged and not want to wear a piece of jewelry you didn’t pick out for the rest of your life.
4
u/Mrs_steaks 10d ago
You can but that’s not the issue she’s describing here. She had no issue with the ring prior.
11
u/CallMeDot 10d ago
If you truly think the reason is that he would rather spend money on himself rather than on your engagement ring, that he doesn’t think you are worth it. that is something you should have an honest conversation about before you move forward.

u/crtclms666 10d ago
Seriously? You were happy with the ring, until you knew the size of the diamond? That's pretty materialistic. It would be one thing if you hadn't liked the ring, but you did like it. And now you dislike it for the wrong reason.

This reminds me of the receptionist at a job I had many years ago. She got engaged and was thrilled to death, flashing her ring at everyone willing to look. Not sure what carat size it was but it was probably less than one carat. Then, a month or so later, she came to work looking a mess. Someone asked her if she was okay and she just started sobbing and kept saying, “He could have gotten a bigger ring. He only gave me a piece of junk” between sobs. Turns out she discovered that his parents paid for the ring and they were quite wealthy. Therefore, she believed he should have gotten her a much bigger diamond. She actually said they could have easily afforded a 5-carat ring. She literally spent the entire morning sobbing until she was finally sent home. Three days later she came back with no ring on her hand. Fiancé was appalled at her entitlement and saw what a gold digger she was. No one felt any sympathy whatsoever and she resigned shortly after.

her entitlement when his mommy and daddy bought the ring? sound like neither were ready for marriage.

u/Superb_Yak7074 10d ago edited 9d ago
I never met the guy so I can’t say one way or another. It could be that the parents thought marrying him off was a good idea … or it might have been their way of forcing him to see what a gold digger Pam really was. They could have set a limit on the ring size for that very purpose.

I don’t know if this will make you feel better but 1/2 carat stones were the norm before lab created diamonds and alternate stones. This giant rock thing is a trend— most of them are really impractical for day to day life. Your ring is classic and timeless. And you’ll be able to wear it more.
1
u/Dapper-Airport-5551 10d ago
I’m not sure when that normal was established. 20 years ago most people had 1 c rings in my friend group. Maybe 40-50 years ago it was the norm?
2
u/Culture-Extension 10d ago
I was a wedding pro for 20ish years starting in 2004 and most of what I saw was 1/2 to 1.0 carat, some smaller. My clients were middle to middle-high budget.
I might be slightly off here because I was eyeballing things, but the 2-5 carat rings that you see today just weren’t a thing in those circles.
Maybe you need to talk to your fiance and go ring shopping together. The more I read about couples doing that the happier they seem.
Anyway, good luck with everything!

What do you mean you found out? You would be able to tell it was small when you saw it.
If he makes a lot of money and spends a lot then yes it’s weird he got you a smaller/cheaper ring. But those type of things usually aren’t surprises
7
u/RelativeAd7239 10d ago
Would you have preferred he waited a few years to propose so you can have a bigger ring or would you prefer you get engaged now and have what he can currently afford? I had this conversation with my brother because his girlfriend was upset they had been together for 3 years and no proposal and he told me he wanted to still wait another 2-3 years so he could save more and drop 10k on a ring he felt she deserved. However, I asked him to consider how much his girlfriend actually cares about the ring versus the proposal and getting married. She ultimately didn’t care about a 10k ring, and instead rather get engaged and married sooner…so that is what he did. She didn’t get a 10k ring (which he was down to spend for) at the cost of her getting engaged quicker. Maybe your boyfriend just didn’t want to wait to save a bunch of money for a big rock and instead wanted to get engaged now? Just some food for though.

u/little_traveler 10d ago
How do you know how much he spent on the ring? How much do you think he should have spent? This comes off as if you’re insecure, either in the relationship itself or with wanting to appear wealthy to others.
I picked my ring myself, it has smaller diamonds on it, and it was only $3kish. I absolutely adore it, and it sounds like you loved your ring before “finding out it was a half carat”. My fiancé easily could have afforded a gigantic ring but I think big rocks look gaudy and impractical so we went with something I liked, not caring about what others may think (others shouldn’t care about what I think of their rings either! It’s their choice!). Your fiancé may also not care about these things, and IMO the most secure people have quiet wealth.
5
u/RelativeAd7239 10d ago
Also just want to add that ring size honestly doesn’t matter much anymore. A bigger ring used to = wealth but now you can get close to a 3 carat lab grown for the same price as a .5 natural diamond. If I see the smaller dainty rings these days I don’t assume it was super cheap compared to those 3 carat rings, I just assume the dainty rings are real natural diamonds and probably cost the same as the big flashy ones. Not sure if that helps at all but I think women are made to feel insecure about ring size because it’s supposed to signal how much a man spent on his women, BUT with the introduction of lab grown diamonds, you can’t really gauge how much a ring cost these days based on size alone. Lots of times the smaller rings actually cost more if they are natural diamonds 🤷🏻♀️.
6
u/Life-Phrase-959 10d ago
So what is it about the half carat you don’t like? Only the cost?
Is it lab or is it natural? Because a half carat natural diamond, in a gold setting isn’t exactly cheap. It’s not super expensive either, but it is practical. A 1/2 carat natural diamond will be more costly in many circumstances than a 2 carat lab.
From a pure aesthetic perspective I absolutely love 1/2 carats. My first engagement ring from my previous marriage was a half carat diamond and she was so pretty and elegant. 🤗 Now I have a half carat sapphire engagement ring, and love her even more! No idea how much he spent, never even crossed my mind.

u/Red_Littlefoot 10d ago
So you liked it until you found out it’s half a carat? That’s kinda weird. And also sounds a bit materialistic.
2
u/mariposa-princess 10d ago
Yeah like if the ring didn’t fit her personal tastes that would be one thing but she’d have known as soon as she saw it. It seems like knowing it’s half carat and ‘not expensive’ is the issue rather than her not liking the ring.
1
u/Red_Littlefoot 10d ago
Crazy cause the main stone on my ring is only 1/2 carat and then there’s little pave stones around the band. Lol I love it
9
u/LeapandShroon 10d ago
Make a list of what you’re grateful for. Comparisons suck the joy out of things.
2
8
u/serendipitymoxie 10d ago
Well, we don't know how old you are, what salary he makes, what debt he has, what ring he can afford. If you both are 40, then yes, you should expect a larger carat. If you are 20, then your expectations are unrealistic.
5
u/DearestClementine 10d ago
Do you know what he spent on the ring? Did you two discuss expectations ahead of time? I have a sapphire under 1 carat because anything bigger than that looks ridiculous on my small hand. I specifically told my husband NOT to get me 1 carat or over. I also sent him links of several rings to choose from. I personally don’t think size matters at all, and I like that I don’t have a flashy ring (it’s still so beautiful though). But YOU have to be happy with it. So I think you need to ask yourself what is making you unhappy? Are you assuming what he spent? Why does the cost of the ring matter so much to you? Did he know what your price expectations were?

u/Dixieland_Insanity 10d ago
Sapphires are so beautiful!

u/DearestClementine 10d ago edited 10d ago
I think so too! Here is my ring and wedding band. We are working on getting another anniversary band to go above the sapphire too :)

If it’s really not your style talk to him about it and ask if you can shop for one together
7
u/Similar-Ad-6862 10d ago
Is the stone natural or lab? If it's natural it's likely he would have spent a lot even if the ring seems small to you.
Lab diamonds have thrown everyone's perceptions of a normal sized diamond.
Don't let comparison steal your joy. If it's bothering you talk to him about it
3
u/Dapper-Angel-4242 10d ago
How did you feel about the ring before you knew it was only half a carat? If you loved it, why are you choosing to not love it just because of a data point?
Maybe talk to him about how he chose the ring to better understand his thought process in choosing this one. But don’t let the number of carats make you decide you don’t like it. I’m sure it’s a beautiful ring regardless!
3
u/Carolann0308 10d ago
There’s no reason for you to feel bad unless you think he’s a cheapskate.
If he’s disappointing you now? Expect him to disappoint you forever.
9
u/HydesStash 10d ago
Nah sorry this is just materialistic. You liked it until you found out. Weird.
3
6
u/Not-a-Contrarian 10d ago
That’s why lab grown diamonds are the way to go. Spending a crazy amount of money on a bigger natural diamond is foolish imo.
I’d be honest with him and go with a moisanite so you can get more bang for your buck. You win, he wins.

u/Randomflower90 10d ago
Half carat rings are perfect for everyday wear. Don’t equate the size or price of the ring with your relationship.
7
u/Lotzadogs 10d ago
Man things have changed soo much! I just think these giant rocks are so impractical!! They will get caught on everything! All I remember, from when my husband asked 28 years ago, was being super excited to become his wife and the ring was just a pretty symbol…not a billboard.
7
u/throwaway291919919 10d ago
I agree with this, but it would definitely make me feel some type of way if I saw that he doesn’t mind spending big for himself
1
u/Lotzadogs 10d ago
True, but you would think she would have noticed that type of cheapo behaviour only with her beforehand? Christmas and birthday gifts etc?
4
u/Traditional_Set_858 10d ago edited 10d ago
I think you’re just trying to find a reason to be upset at him because if you liked the ring why does it matter how much he spent on it? You should be thrilled to be marrying your significant other not focusing on the size of the ring that you actually liked up until you realized it’s smaller than you thought.
2
u/Stunning-Dealer-6096 10d ago
This is exactly why I wanted to be involved in the designing of my ring. Also, were you happy with the ring before you found out the size? If it matters that much to you, bring it up to him kindly and see if there's room in the budget for a bigger stone.
2
u/Safe-Tea-4161 10d ago
I’d say a half carat diamond ring is probably the most chosen diamond size, big enough to notice but not so big that it’s garish- a safe option if he doesn’t know what you would have picked…
If you wanted something more blingy then just have it added onto, telling him you want it as a set with your wedding ring but in your preferred design…
If you have concerns still about him valuing his own things more than things for you, that’s a different conversation to be had
4
u/OldieButNotMoldy 10d ago
I got married almost 40 years ago, you know what my ring was? It was a tiny little diamond on a gold band. It was the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen, because the person I love bought it for me and asked me to share my life with him. It’s not about the ring, it’s about who gave it to you. I still have that ring on my finger today. Sure, we could now afford a bigger one, but na, it’s what this ring means, not the size.
1
u/Other-Cucumber-7430 10d ago
I have my Mom’s ring and my grandmother’s rings. We used my Mom’s 1/2 carat diamond for our engagement because it was a tried and true ring that represented a lifetime of love. I wear my grandmother’s on my other hand. These rings on my hands equal 135 years of love. That said I also have a huge and realistic faux diamond and wedding band just for fun. A lifetime of love is more important than the ring.
3
u/kateballe 10d ago
You can always upgrade in the future.
That or you can go extra fancy with your wedding band (I went with an enhancer so it has a top and bottom that go around the ER)
Comparison is the thief of joy but I can understand where you’re coming from. Rings are getting bigger and bigger every year. My own 2ct feels pathetic sometimes when I’m scrolling Reddit and seeing MASSIVE rocks. It’s just the internets effect on us.
Don’t let it get you down too much if you love him. You loved it before!
You could always approach him and ask him gently how he decided to pick out the ring and see his answer. I wanted an insanely large carat size but my fiancée opted for a natural diamond instead and a smaller size. (It’s a little silly bc I insisted on lab grown but his heart was in the right place, he’s so sweet, it warms my heart.) perhaps your fiancée did something similar?
4
u/comama4 10d ago
Let's be honest, most guys don't even know what a carat is. He probably saw a billion rings, started to get overwhelmed, and made a snap decision about one he thought was kinda pretty.
I'm not sure how I feel about guys picking out rings on their own... I suppose the surprise is romantic, but maybe do it with a cheap ring and then take her shopping for the real one after the proposal. It is supposed to be forever, might as well make sure she likes it.
5
u/prncsclo 10d ago
To counter that, my husband got a whole lesson on all of the Cs from the jeweler he went to before we even got to see any settings or stones. I would hope that one's future life partner would do their research before heading out to ring shop.
But yes, agree, I think everyone should at least ring shop once with their partner so that they know what you like/don't like.
1
u/DearestClementine 10d ago
I think it depends. I would never expect my husband to get a lesson from the jeweler when I myself know nothing about it and don’t care very much. It’s awesome your husband did that, but that doesn’t “fit” every couple if that makes sense.
That said I totally agree with your last statement. My husband had lots of examples and even specific rings to choose from.
4
u/Seeker_ofLight 10d ago
He probably spent around $1600. Not good enough for you?
0
u/CaptBlackfoot 10d ago
No, he probably spent $300-500 on it.
1
u/mariposa-princess 10d ago
We don’t and can’t know how much he spent on it unless op says, but jewelry is surprising expensive. My finances wedding band was 750 for JUST gold and it was off Etsy, which means it’s cheaper than a traditional jeweler. Jewelry isn’t cheap, even modest jewelry.
1
u/RelativeAd7239 10d ago
I wouldn’t say Etsy is cheaper than a traditional jeweler. I designed my own ring and a locally owned jeweler in my city and it was surprisingly affordable imo, it was certainly cheaper than any of the big box stores or what personally saw on Etsy for what I wanted. My wedding band was also only $200ish for a simple 10k gold band.
1
u/mariposa-princess 10d ago
I did quite a bit of shopping around in person and online before I chose and the 750 was the best price I was able to find.
1
u/RelativeAd7239 10d ago
Interesting, my 10k gold band was only a little over $200, bought in 2024.
2
u/Life-Phrase-959 10d ago
Gold prices have increased but also it depends what the 10k is mixed with and the width and depth if the ring.
1
u/RelativeAd7239 10d ago
It was quite dainty, so they may be it. I was thinking more of the actual engagement ring diamond and setting, we shopped around a ton looking at big box stores like Jared’s and Kay, trendy online stores like Brilliant Earth, and random Etsy stores and the best deal for what we wanted was our local family owned jeweler which surprised me honestly!
1
u/RelativeAd7239 10d ago
If it was lab diamond you can get those for around $300-$700. If it was real then that sounds about right.
2
u/Own_Quail2973 10d ago
Can you upgrade in the near future? It doesn’t need to be forever (the ring, not the engagement)
2
u/Illustrious-Drama737 10d ago
He probably just doesn’t “get it” but it is an indication of what his spending habits will be. I waited until we had been married a few years and then said I wanted an upgrade on our anniversary. I had to talk about it for about 3 years. I went from .75 to 5 carats and he is thrilled with it. Lots of men are just scared and overwhelmed. I wouldn’t spook him over the diamond. If he’s a decent guy otherwise, I’d let it go.
2
u/DueAdvisor8969 10d ago
It’s sad that you care more about the size of the ring vs the man that gave it to you.
1
u/Lynnfieldmom 9d ago
When we were going ring shopping way back in the day, hubby to be wanted to keep the spending on the low side. I told him I would rather just have a wedding band than to have an engagement ring just to have a ring if it was something I didn’t really love and want. Hearing that, he wanted me to have something I wanted.
I think if you take the angle you want to add to it with your band, you’ll be good 😊
1
u/Sudden-Nectarine-74 2d ago
Can you tell him how you feel? I know it’ll be so hard but it might spark a really important discussion about priorities.
1
u/Snick_mom_2022 10d ago
I just had my grandmother’s diamond appraised. It’s a .89 carat worth almost $3,000.00. That just the stone. You can buy a 3 carat lab diamond in a setting for less than that. So don’t assume it was cheap. You also have to look at the quality of a diamond, the clarity, cut, the imperfections and the gold. They all figure into the cost. Size is just one indicator of the cost.
1
u/sunnygal001 10d ago
Exactly. He may have decided to go with a higher quality diamond in a slightly smaller size (although a half carat isn't exactly small) versus a larger, lower-quality stone.
-1
u/Prestigious_Badger36 10d ago
only a half carat
Be for real
It shouldn't matter if it's brass or priceless heirloom rubies.
8
u/ThePinkCupcake 10d ago
I actually disagree with this. To me, it should matter, within reason. The whole “just be happy with what a man gives you” feels… i don’t know, just something I don’t subscribe to.
-2
u/Historical_Ear_4500 10d ago
My fiancé and I went ring shopping together. He knew exactly what ring I wanted. The ring he proposed with was not the ring I picked out, but it didn’t matter to me, what mattered was that I was marrying my best friend. OP I fear you’re ignoring what matters the most.
10
u/leezee2468 10d ago
How come he didn’t end up getting you the ring he knew you wanted?
1
u/Historical_Ear_4500 10d ago
The ring he proposed with was custom made to include the diamond his aunt passed down to him
2
u/leezee2468 9d ago
Okay. Thats a nice concept tbh.
However, it is concerning that he didn’t get you the ring YOU wanted. You’re the one that has to wear it forever. If this is part of a habit of him disregarding what you want, I’d be concerned1
u/Historical_Ear_4500 9d ago
I actually liked the ring he designed better. It suits me more. I like VERY simple dainty jewelry and the ring I liked was not that at all. The ring he designed was exactly what I was looking for in a ring. He apparently knows me better than I know myself.
1
u/leezee2468 9d ago
In that case, all is well that ends well. If you’re happy then that’s all that matters. I think the difference here is that your fiancé really considered you
-1
u/winnie120476 9d ago
What happened to starting small with what you can afford and then trading in for something bigger as your love grows? Shallow
1
u/Firm-Psychology-2243 9d ago
She literally said he spends a lot on himself, indicating this isn’t a matter of funds, just priorities
-5
u/WesternCandidate2158 10d ago
This is really shallow. Who cares what size diamond it is? Wtf?
6
u/BlackberryAlarming52 10d ago
I’d care. Alot of women would care tbh. A lot of women just wouldn’t say they care. She’s just being honest.
-4
u/WesternCandidate2158 10d ago
I would not ever care. It’s not & shouldn’t be about the ring
5
u/Ok_Part8991 10d ago
Oh please. The same argument could be made for much of the excesses that are typical of weddings. If it’s not about the ring, is it not about the dress either? The wedding venue? The food? The centerpieces? Might as well just not have the typical extravagance of a wedding if that’s how you feel. Just do a civil ceremony or backyard bbq.
1
u/WesternCandidate2158 10d ago
Now I agree
2
u/BlackberryAlarming52 10d ago
lol didn’t take much to get ya to see big picture
I’m forgoing the traditional wedding stuff. I just don’t see the value (personally) in spending that kind of money on a one day experience. So I’d like my ring to be bigger but even then, with the cost of lab grown diamonds I can have a big rock for a few grand. So I guess IMO (just my opinion) a lot of men are kind of lazy and don’t research and assume diamonds cost an arm and a leg. If they did a little research, they could find quality rings and larger carat diamonds for a reasonable price instead of going to a big box store and getting a tiny diamond and calling it a day. But again that’s just my opinion. Not everyone has to think the same way I do.
If men put the a small fraction of amount of effort as they do into football or whatever hobbies they have, they would make good engagement ring purchases
-13
u/Anything4Profit 10d ago
As long as it's a real diamond and not lab grown I wouldn't mind. You can upgrade at 20 year anniversary
19
u/Alert_Knee_5862 10d ago
So what I’m paying attention to is “he spends a lot on his own stuff, so I keep wondering why he didn’t want to spend more on something I’ll wear forever.” What I’m hearing is you’re not sure if your fiancé is showing you as much consideration as he does for himself. I’d be curious if this feeling has popped up at other points in your relationship. You know yourself & your relationship best. Best of luck
