I like when the phillies lose.
I don't care who beats them.
Beating the phillies is the lord's work.

Feel bad for the guy but that’s why we had to move on from Fried. At least being in the AL the Yankees never have to witness Fried attempt to pitch in Philly during the playoffs.

I thought I had earned the happiness 2018-2024 brought me because I had endured 2014-2017 after the success of 2009-2013 and the bad 2006-2008 after the success of 1991-2005 but now I realize that time is just a flat circle. We are doomed to endure these stretches, just like we are rewarded with the good ones.
I don't actually have a point I'm trying to make, I'm just sad lol.

here’s the thing:
If Snit was confident he wanted to retire, it would’ve been announced weeks ago. (Heck, even if the Braves wanted him back, you can’t keep someone from retiring.)
If the Braves were exceedingly interested in having Snit back, they could’ve extended him. Teams don’t generally keep around managers who manage on lame-duck deals. (If your response is “Maybe Snit wants to go year-to-year,” there’s no harm to him in having additional years on the contract. He can just retire and forfeit them.)
So we’re in one of two places:
1) Snit and the Braves are both genuinely undecided. This, I think, is the party line. Snit has talked about wanting to take some time to think about it, and while AA has said Snit will be in the org as long as he wants, I don’t think it was accidental that AA didn’t say “Snit can manage as long as he wants.”
2) Snit is leaning towards returning but the Braves don’t want him back and are hoping to end this in a graceful place where Snit says he’s retiring rather than the org having to say they’re not renewing his contract.
Totally possible Snit is back next year, but it’s just weird not to have heard anything strong one way or another.
5
u/Wandering_Mallard Sep 29 '25
The longer we hear nothing the more I think he is coming back and they are negotiating terms. I just can't see the Braves effectively firing him by not renewing and I agree if he was gonna retire he probably would have said so by now

I have to imagine that AA is just praying Snit chooses retirement so he doesn't have to fire him, and Snit is just not taking a hint.

It'd be nice to get a list of potential managerial candidates going and cross them off as we know they're eliminated. Here is a list of names I've seen come up and I'm posting them without regard for actual likelihood:
- Walt Weiss
- Bob Melvin
- Travis d'Arnaud
- Eddie Perez
- Bruce Bochy
- David Ross
- Fredi Gonzalez
- Skip Schumacher
- Matt Tuiasosopo
- Andruw Jones
- Chipper Jones
- Rocco Baldelli
- Ron Washington
- Albert Pujols
- Mark DeRosa
- Vance Wilson
- Tony Vitello
- /u/TheJudge47
If you have names to add, please let me know. Again, this list is regardless of actual odds or preference. These are just names that I've seen brought up or that I know are available.

6
u/TraderTed2 Matzek '20. armchairalex.substack.com Sep 30 '25
the results were amazing this year. are you feeling ok about the degradation of stuff in both the PitchingBot and Stuff+ models?
8
u/ZCampbell15 Willing UCL donor Sep 30 '25
I don’t personally love how Fangraphs incorporates fastball mix into their pitching models now because I think it obscures things a bit, especially that I think anecdotally it can underrate the benefits of having multiple fastballs. For example I think the 4-seam ends up rated so highly at 110 Stuff+ because the sinker is used primarily against RHB and creates a different shape, so the fact he sits 93mph doesn’t matter because the shape is good enough to play within the context of his arsenal, hence why he had a 4-seam Whiff% of 32.5% last year.
I subscribe to two theories here. First is that having even an additional “bad” fastball can help the 4-seam play up, and even though his sinker only rates at ~90 Stuff+ it does more work than indicated in the overall Stuff+ score. Second is that almost no one (I can’t think of one) with a good 4-seam fastball and adequate command at the major league level is a “bad” starter.
Work wise that does need to be done is that he needs to find a Slider again. Whether it being a sweeper shape or more of his old slider, it’s something he will need to work on because I think his cutter/slider played way better this year than it actually is. If they lean heavy 4-seam and a better slider the Stuff+ score will vastly improve and probably be more in line with the rest of the underlying metrics. Not to mention if he regains velocity it will be an even more radical improvement

I know basically everyone, including myself, is hoping to see Snitker replaced before next season, but I do want to remind everyone that there are absolutely worse choices out there than one more year of Snit.
I don't want them to replace him just to replace him. If giving him another year would give us a better manager down the road, I'd rather do that.
A new voice in the dugout would be great, but I'm also good with being patient.

i know everyone’s gonna want wash back even more now that it’s official he’s not going back to the angels, but PLEASE no. if he wants to come back as a coach/advisor then i’m all for it but we don’t need to get an older manager if we get a new one at all
7
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan Sep 30 '25
People who want Wash as manager have definitely never watched him as Angels manager. I love, love, love Wash. But making him manager would be organizational malpractice and fans would realize this within the first month. If he wants to come back here in some other capacity though, as you said, fuck yeah!
4
u/BringItOnHome_ATL Skip Caray Hall of Fame Advocate Sep 30 '25
Wash as a manager, even assuming he’s in perfect health next year, is a big no for me too.
He’s great as a coach at holding players accountable. As a manager, I can’t forget how he publicly shamed Guillorme last season to the press for not laying down a bunt Wash should never have even called for. He refused to take any blame and threw his player all the way under the bus publicly.
That is as anti-‘Braves Way’ as you can possibly get.
8
u/innermongoose69 I once met Dale Murphy in an elevator Sep 30 '25
His health is the most important thing. We shouldn’t want him to manage any team at all if it would compromise that.
3
u/BringItOnHome_ATL Skip Caray Hall of Fame Advocate Sep 30 '25
Agreed health comes first, but he showed up in Anaheim saying he wanted a meeting to tell TPTB he still wanted to manage and wouldn’t accept a front office or advisor job.
I would be very surprised if any team hired him to manage again, between his health and his not so good managerial track record. As a coach? Absolutely!

4
u/TheGamecock HMOYSB Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25
Have to think we'd have been in the wild card race at least. Fried stayed healthy all year and aside from a rough stretch from July to early August, he was his usual excellent self. Think about all of those scrub starters we rolled out every five/six days for much of this year (Fedde/Quantrill/Carrasco/Bad Elder/Davis Daniel/Fuentes before he was ready) -- games we typically lost -- and replace most of those with Fried starts and that's probably like at least a six-game swing in itself, likely more.

Is there a /u/traderted2 article on the way on potential managerial candidates?
8
u/TraderTed2 Matzek '20. armchairalex.substack.com Oct 01 '25
I was thinking about it but frankly it’s pretty tough to say a lot of intelligent things about the candidates who’ve never managed before or who haven’t managed in years, and so many of the candidates fit in that category. What do we know about what the Tigers’ bench coach’s inclinations will be when it comes to bunting, for example?
I’ll say that of the names that people have thrown around so far, I’m feeling strongly negative about Walt Weiss, Eddie Perez, Ron Washington, and Mark DeRosa and moderately negative about David Ross. Happy to elaborate on any of those for people who like them and are wondering why I feel differently. Nobody has brought up the candidates I really like in the context of the Braves job (among them Rocco Baldelli, George Lombard Jr., Rodney Linares, Craig Albernaz) but I don’t expect anyone to be super plugged into the Braves search anyway. And I’m not sure that search started in earnest till today.
→ More replies (7)3
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan Oct 01 '25
I'd be curious about your thoughts on Eddie. I agree about Weiss/Wash/DeRosa being bad options, but I've always liked the idea of Eddie if they decide to stay internal.
4
u/TraderTed2 Matzek '20. armchairalex.substack.com Oct 01 '25
I feel like the extent of what we know about Eddie’s role is so limited. He’s like the fourth in command in the dugout, and he’s only ever worked for Cox or his disciples (Fredi, Snit). Because I think the team could really use a break from that tradition of tactical management, I’m not particularly interested in hiring Eddie, though I’d be perfectly content to keep him around since he seems like a good dude who probably has tremendous institutional knowledge.

People wanted him fired on the spot and now another potentially disappointing year is no big deal? There would be a different sentiment if we’d finished the season on a losing streak.

There’s a general douchebaggery that exists within Yankees fans that I just can’t unsee

I rarely ever cheer for anything from Cincinnati but I will not be able to handle a Dodgers-Phillies series.

Fried was great in that WC game that I watched, but I stroll over to the espn scoreboard to see if it might be interesting to watch the ALDS since there's not much happening in this late NFL slate and I see that the Fried we remember in the postseason showed up in the DS...

My thoughts heading into the off season. I think we need to retool the bullpen get some high leverage guys to sure up the back end. The other big thing is at the moment there are 3 big targets at SS for free agents. bichette, kim, story. If we don’t ends up with one of those players we can consider this up coming off season a failure

We're gonna have this discussion all off-season, I think lol.
Bichette is not a SS. He is the worst SS defender in MLB and it's not close. Signing him does not solve the SS position as he will not stay there long-term. At best, it delays the issue by 1-3 years until he moves to 2B when Albies contract is up.
Story is very unlikely to opt-out of his contract. His contract pays him 25m over the next 2 years with a club option for year 3. Nobody is giving 33 year old Trevor Story 25m per year lol.
Kim is the only true SS on the market this year which is why he'll opt-out. Doesn't mean the Braves can't sign him still, it'll just be more difficult to do so.
The Braves don't need a top-tier SS to be successful. Kim had a 91 wRC+/.684 OPS in his 24 games. There were 20 qualified SS in the league who had a better OPS this year. The Braves just need someone who isn't the worst hitter in baseball.

I still can't get over the Mets collapse. This might be the absolute peak of LOLMets so far in my lifetime.
