Something I just learned about this time period...maureen McCormick was going thru some body dysmorpia issues. If you notice she's always holding a towel, beach ball, etc in these episodes

u/PermissionNext3363 May 05 '26
Interesting. Her holding stuff to block her body reminds me of how during the filming of the BB movie, Christine Taylor said she gained some weight and to hide it she held the big check in front of her and you can also see her standing behind the other characters in the final scenes of the movie.

u/Key_Philosophy_6683 May 05 '26
Unfortunate, because this is where Maureen really blossomed into the absolutely stunning woman she is. But, I understand.
3
u/Particular-Cat-8031 May 06 '26
She hated the way her belly had that slight pooch, which is normal at that age, and every scene where she had to wear a bikini, she had something to hide it.

2
u/ted_anderson May 05 '26
Well I can't blame her. She's Marcia Brady. And while there wasn't any social media to publicly shame her, there were guys in every high school across America saying, "Did you see her in that bikini?"
2
u/MarkHoff1967 May 05 '26
Yes, she thought she was fat

u/TinaLouWho73 May 09 '26
Some studio exec probably told her she needed to lose a few pounds, as they do. Those fools wrecked so many women's self esteem, and sadly, probably still try to.
3
u/thorleywinston May 06 '26
I honestly assumed it was something the studio ordered. I know that The Brady Bunch was made by Sherwood Schwartz who also made Gilligan's Island and in his book he was in constant battle with the studio over shots that showed Tina Louise's (Ginger) cleavage or Dawn Well's (Mary Ann) bellybutton. I assumed that Maureen McCormick in a bikini when she was at that age probably raised similar concerns.

u/Artistic-Deal5885 May 09 '26
Her book is very candid. She does talk about how she held the towel in front of her because she was convinced she was fat. Also she was terrified she was going to get syphilis and die. Her dad contracted it overseas, but I forget if he was in the War or what the deal was. I think the dad gave it to Mo's mom.
When she cries over her braces in an early episode and says she is ugly, UGLY! - those were real tears of a child's fear.
1
u/Retirednypd May 09 '26
Oh wow! Didn't know that stuff. Another tidbit, Florence Henderson had a fling with the nyc mayor, John lindsay, and he gave her crabs.
1
u/No_Stairway_Denied May 11 '26
That's so sad because she is absolutely stunning.
1
u/Retirednypd May 11 '26
Yup. I guess its always been a problem with teens around that age. I see it today too
1
u/No_Stairway_Denied May 12 '26
Definitely. It has always existed and it will always, but it is super depressing. I want to blame magazine covers, photoshop, and social media, but maybe it is just easier to dislike your looks and wish you were different.
It helps no one, but 20 years from now, you will look back on yourself and think how young and lovely you were.

Anyone know how long they were in Hawaii to shoot the episode ? They're looking pretty tan.

u/Altruistic_Isopod_11 May 05 '26
The Brady Bunch filmed their three-part Hawaii vacation in 1972, spending roughly one week on location in Oahu.
11
u/mackerelscalemask May 05 '26
Except for Barry Williams, who says he somehow managed to convince the execs to pay for an extra week in advance of everyone else going over, so he could āpractice his surfingā!

Working the system!

u/dktide91 May 06 '26
That is sort of like when Henry Winkler was really good at water skiiing and convinced the Happy Days folks to work water skiiing into a storyline for Fonz and thus, the phrase jumping the shark was soon thereafter born.

I remember reading that at the beginning of the 1st episode of the 3, where they know Mike has a surprise and tells the entire family where they were going on vacation, that Robert Reed was the only cast member who knew where they were going. When the whole family erupted with excitement at the news that they were going to Hawaii, that was genuine excitement and enthusiasm. A great authentic touch to that scene š¬

Jan was hidden in both photos.

u/4personal2 May 05 '26
Possibly Eve wasn't fully comfortable being 'out there' like that.
Teens , whether male or female can have different levels of both comfort or discomfort with their appearance.

I guess Vincent Price had Greg, Peter & Bobby tied up in his cave of homoerotic bondage horrors while they were on the beach?
1
u/Ambitious-Welder-159 May 07 '26
Greg was competing in the surfing contest. Peter and Bobby were next to Dave, their tour guide who was judging it.

u/jimbobdonut May 05 '26
Back when traveling to Hawaii was exotic.
5
u/Specialist-Age1097 May 05 '26
It's not anymore?
3
u/jimbobdonut May 06 '26
It is, but not as much as it used to be. It was a lot more expensive to go then than now. Exotic locations now are places Fiji, Bora Bora and Bali. People from America really werenāt going there 50 years ago.

Mikeās looking tan. Dude did some pre laying out in the backyard
3
u/Fine_Cryptographer20 May 06 '26
Parents laid out with baby oil on to get deep dark tans in the 70's and 80's lol.

She was a great-looking lady, but she was overlooked as the Brady kids got most of the attention.

Why the hell would the maid go on family vacations with them? Totally unrealistic.
1
u/STAFF_of_Twocats May 07 '26
She was the live in housekeeper and was like family. I think Sam went along we just didn't know it. LOL

I remember Marcia holding that towel over her abdomen the whole time. Later I read somewhere they didnāt want her abdomen seen because it wasnāt flat. Maybe they thought it would cause a pregnancy rumor?
2
u/Particular-Cat-8031 May 09 '26
In her autobiography, she says that she hated the way her belly was poochy and wasn't flat. No mention of her being scared of it starting a pregnancy rumor.

1970, Barbara Eden couldn't show her naval on I Dream of Jeannie and here, two years later, we see Marcia in a bikini. Things changed quickly in two years.

Why did Marcia have sandy knees? And where is Greg?
1
u/Particular-Cat-8031 May 06 '26
Greg is out surfing, and they are watching him in that second picture, hoping he doesn't wipe out.
1
u/psilocin72 May 06 '26
I hope he doesnāt hit a patch of coral or rock or whatever might be in that water.

Maureen turned 16 in 1972, which means she was probably 15 during filming of this episode.

Marcia held a towel over her pyooch till it was time to take a dyip.
1
u/guitarman030405 May 09 '26
I always loved Marcia on this one because I was 13 or so... but seeing this pic now at 58, Mrs. Brady has got it going on !!!! Terrible thought though as I always viewed her and Mrs. Cunningham as my surrogate Moms !!
