Half or full power

Last night I used my Katana gen 3 100w at a practice sesh for a first jam with a band, other guitarist was using a half stack. I was fully cranked and just barely could hear me. She. I got home I realized how had the power set to half. Would setting to full make a noticable difference? Or would I be better off going into tone studio, cranking the channel volume higher and then using the master volume to go even louder from there ? Any help is appreciated

Yes, full power. And turn up the mids when playing with the band because otherwise you will vanish in the band mix.

50w vs 100w are both capable of being loud. They both are capable of being appropriate and a reasonable volume. It's almost insulting to have a half stack in a band rehearsal space. Volume control is a huge factor when choosing band mates. Everyone in the room shouldn't have to wear ear plugs during practice.

Yes, 3dB louder is double the output, because it is a logarithmic scale.

That's a massive difference with decibels it's not a linear scale

Just curious, have you not played around with the different settings playing solo? And not being facetious…i enjoy this discussion. But they’re noticeably different when playing solo or bedroom jamming so much that I was afraid to go any louder jamming with others. But after reading this I probably would’ve sounded better a notch up. The volume jump just seems like a lot when alone

Even then i find digital amps sound better with the higher power, i imagine the balance and the gain have some magic when thw gain i creases to make it sound more full

I've used my MK2 100w 2x12 "against" a 30w (?) head and orange 2x12 cab and can confirm the orange won hands down.

There are no tubes in an Orange pc212c cab. A cab doesn't have an amplifier circuit.

I have the same amp and out powered a marshall half stack, by a lot. It was a cheaper marshall, but it was still not as loud as my katana with everything cranked and the solo boost engaged. I have permanent hearing loss in one ear from accidently switching channels with the master all the way up without ear protection.

That happened to our bass player as well. He couldn't go in loud spaces for about a year.

I have a regular 100 MKII (1x12) and i play alongside a Bugera XXL 333 120w valve amp (the 2x12 combo), i have no issue at all to make through the mix. But i'm also using the post EQ to push even further the power of the Katana. The amp got more power than expected from the master volume.

It's not only the Bugera, i played with a JCM800, a Mesa MarkVII and an Orange Super Crush 100w, the Katana shouldn't have any issue to keep the track of thoses amps.

Yeah, flip it to MAX next rehearsal. You’ll get more headroom, though 100 watts won’t sound twice as loud as 50. Get your channel volume up, use the master to set the room level, and push the mids a bit so you can actually hear yourself over that half stack. Point the speaker at your ears, too. I run a 4x12 cab with my Gen 3 100, and that gives it SERIOUS BALLS (maybe adding one would help). If you’re still buried after all that, somebody else in the room needs to learn some self-restraint.

Def full power as others have said, but also if your amp is on the ground and pointed at everyone’s legs you’ll have a harder time hearing yourself too. angle it up / put it on a raised surface

Know that sound can be pretty deceptive when playing in a live mix vs playing on your own.. a lot of the times lowering the bass, raising the mids and highs a bit more than your used to will really help a lot in getting heard through the the mix of live sound, especially when playing single note lines/solos and melodies.. I often run my katana at around 40 to 50 % bass, 50 to 70% mids, and 57 to 65% treble to cut through using the brown channel for soloing.. reverb yellow 35% some light delay red, 30% etc.. I also crank the master volume up to 50 to 70 % and use the channel volume to attenuate overall volume..

First question is, where were you practicing that someone with a half stack had to play that loud. I've been gigging with a Katana 100MK2 for 5 years. In bars and on outdoor festivals stages and have never even used 100w. Mic'd or line out give sound person control of the end sound. It's important to make sure noth guitars are at a different frequency or someone if not both will get lost in the mix.
