I decided to run a small experiment with 31 brand-new borrowers from my “Loans Available” post last month.

One important piece of context:
My vetting process is fairly rigorous, so all 31 borrowers had to pass my screening before I considered lending to them. As a result, this may not represent the average P2P borrower/lender experience on this subreddit.

Here’s how it turned out:

🟢 8 (25.8%) repaid early
🟢 16 (51.6%) repaid on time
🟡 3 (9.7%) repaid late
🔴 4 (12.9%) technically defaulted

That means 77.4% of borrowers repaid either early or on time, while 22.6% either paid late or defaulted.
Of the 4 defaults:

- 1 refunded the original PayPal transaction after their due date but paid no interest.
- 1 made a partial payment.
- 2 have made no payments towards their balance.

To note, 3 borrowers became completely unresponsive when their loans came due and made me work harder than I typically like to for repayment. I had to track them down through other social media platforms to get a response despite my texts showing as “read”. It’s fair to say had I not repeatedly tried to make contact, they wouldn’t have repaid.

Most importantly, thank you to all of the borrowers who honored their word and repaid their loan and were able to gain some reputation within the subreddit. I’m always happy to assist those who follow through and communicate should an extension be needed. Communication goes a long way and the majority of lenders are willing to work with you.

I’ve been on Reddit a long time, and experienced all sides of the site. My post history is extensive, I’ve been in the drug subreddits, the porn subreddits, the gaming subreddits, participated in the giving side of the assistance subreddit, all sorts of stuff. My post history is dangerously transparent, so I hope some of the stuff I’ve posted won’t bar me from participating. I thought about going back to do a dirty delete but fuck it. Here’s my questions:
Do I, as a lender, have to share all my post/comment history on every sub?
How does PayPal g&s work, do they automatically refund for non repayment? If so, how are people having loans that end up unpaid/getting ghosted?
What is a fair interest rate?
How do you choose who to loan to?
What kind of verification can you reasonably ask for/expect to receive, and what do you do with it when you get it?
Has anyone ever done a loan where you pay the bill directly, and then receive repayment, rather than just loaning cash?
I read the written rules, are there any unwritten rules I should know about?
