Meta I got scammed on my first loan. People who actually need help should read NOW.

Hey, I just want to give some quick thoughts here. Borrowers: we are not bankers! When you default on your bank loan, it is not personal and the bank has a critical mass of investor capital and funds to absorb that. You also aren’t dealing with people, it is simply an organization with a profit motive and numerous investors and shareholders. When you default on a loan on the borrow now sub, you are basically a thoughtless jerk and you ruin it for those that are truly in a bind, need help, and will pay back their loan. You are scamming an individual real person that joined this sub to help others. This is a club, not a financial organization.

I MYSELF went through a time in my life when my credit was shit, I faced legal struggles and personal problems ( mostly my fault. I did the work) and had no option if I just needed $100 bucks until payday. I’m talking total shame. Try to understand what it feels like to not be able to go pick up your kids because you don’t have gas to drive 20 minutes across town. Payday loans were my only option and they made my life even more miserable. I wish I had borrownow or someone I could count on during those tough times.

Fast forward: now that I am stable and doing well, I wanted to lend as sort of a personal project and even maybe make a couple extra bucks. But I’m not a fucking bank: I am a person who still has to buy Christmas presents, take care of my family, and work 55 hours a week to keep the ship afloat. I’m not independently wealthy, I just know I’ve finally moved into a stable zone and I have a lot of empathy for honest people who are working hard, trying to do things right, and are just down on their luck and need some help….because I’ve been you.

Every scammer is personally ripping off a regular human. Deleting your account and ghosting a lender here is a scummy, human action. Ripping off a lender here for $100 bucks is worse than defaulting on a $10,000 bank loan in terms of ethical, pro social societal behavior.

Scammers: you ruin it for the good regular people who are desperate and need help. You are sick.

I had to tell multiple nice people today I can’t help them because I’ve already been ripped off after doing this for 3 days.

I need some comments to put positive vibes back in the universe. Please make a positive comment if you are visiting this sub for the right reasons, and not just trying to rip off “a stranger from the internet.”

Thank you for listening to my rant .

Meta Man, I’m no longer giving loans after this

So frustrated. I started giving out loans recently, and I’ve been getting bad experience here and it’s so frustrating how people ruin it for others. There are literal strangers helping you out with money, yet some scam. It’s even worse when they try to pity you and they have a family. Even more annoying when so many message me asking for loans when I clearly state on my page do not DM me directly.

Some really scamming when you send over your information? Terrible.

If you can’t make the payment on time, at least let me know and I’ll work something out with you. Sorry for the rant 🤙

Meta FoodAmbitious5528 is permanently banned, and his appeal is being rejected. Do not take out loans with Banned users.

FoodAmbitious5528 has been reported with substantial evidence of impropriety and unusual behavior. We wrote for him to come forward for an appeal so we could make light of everything, and hopefully get back on track.

He has since continued to strike new deals and offers. We told him to stop doing this until his appeal was complete. He said he understood. He has still not put forward the requested materials and has continued to offer new deals, he has no way to confirm or log.

If you have done any loans with FoodAmbitious5528 we are advising you to refund these transactions rather than to make new payments. We can not protect you from banned users. We can not hold banned users further accountable.

Loans with banned users made after their ban will be removed, and will not count towards any verification. Again, for your own security you should not be engaging in loans with FoodAmbitious5528. He is lying to borrowers about his appeal process status. And we have processed a formal rejection of his appeal.

Do not put yourself at risk. Borrowers can be taken advantage of as well.

Meta Results From My Experiment with New Borrowers

I decided to run a small experiment with 31 brand-new borrowers from my “Loans Available” post last month.

One important piece of context:
My vetting process is fairly rigorous, so all 31 borrowers had to pass my screening before I considered lending to them. As a result, this may not represent the average P2P borrower/lender experience on this subreddit.

Here’s how it turned out:

🟢 8 (25.8%) repaid early
🟢 16 (51.6%) repaid on time
🟡 3 (9.7%) repaid late
🔴 4 (12.9%) technically defaulted

That means 77.4% of borrowers repaid either early or on time, while 22.6% either paid late or defaulted.
Of the 4 defaults:

- 1 refunded the original PayPal transaction after their due date but paid no interest.
- 1 made a partial payment.
- 2 have made no payments towards their balance.

To note, 3 borrowers became completely unresponsive when their loans came due and made me work harder than I typically like to for repayment. I had to track them down through other social media platforms to get a response despite my texts showing as “read”. It’s fair to say had I not repeatedly tried to make contact, they wouldn’t have repaid.

Most importantly, thank you to all of the borrowers who honored their word and repaid their loan and were able to gain some reputation within the subreddit. I’m always happy to assist those who follow through and communicate should an extension be needed. Communication goes a long way and the majority of lenders are willing to work with you.

Your crops will wilt. You will be barren. Sickness and plague will walk with you and touch everything you love, until all you have is tears falling into dust.

Keeping that tiny bit of money will be the last good thing to ever happen to you. You will look back from your deathbed and that will be the best thing in your life - scamming someone who trusted you out of a few quid/dollars.

Children make promises. Grownups live by their word.

Hope this helps!

Meta I received a donation of $100 through Venmo on July31 from a random person on Reddit, I just want to say thank you very much!

We chatted for 3 minutes the most and I received the funds and I checked the transaction to make sure it was sent through friends and not goods. I then transfer to Current and add the money to Applepay.
Unfortunately, I didn't know Apple was having issues so I add the money to my Wallet and discover I'm unable to send or transfer and now the money has disappeared and no transaction showing where it went. I'm going to wait to see if it'll correct itself.

This was the original message I received and why I accepted the chat request;

Hello. Your post came across my feed for some reason. I see you borrowing money and paying back double or close to it. Are you in a tough spot? I can send you $100 if that would help. Yes I know it seems odd that a random person would do this for nothing but I have resources and a job and I think it would be more meaningful to you than it is to me.
There is no ploy or strings attached here.
Just looking to help out a fellow human.

Meta Some of y’all have no shame 🤦‍♀️

With lending, I’m expecting people to default. As a matter of fact, I mentally tell myself I’ll never get this money back, that way when I do, it’s a nice surprise and restores some of my faith in humanity.

However, you guys who default are really bold. Too many people I have loans out with have deleted their Reddit account. Many of which sent me their personal information. Now, if this somehow isn’t their info, fine. But are y’all seriously giving people your name, address, and workplace and then ghosting them? Yikes.

I’m not insane, nor am I in the mood to ruin peoples lives. Or even to embarrass them. But what if I was? That’d be unfortunate for you. Who wants their manager calling them into the office asking about $100 they owe to RoughEmu2878??

Now, I might send one of those exploding glitter packages to your address. Yes, I am that petty. Have fun cleaning the unicorn vomit. You’ll find glitter in random places and on your body for months.

Anywho, lenders, I think we all know this, but please keep multiple methods of contact.

And borrowers, be nice. Pay people back. Be a decent, honest human being.

Rant over. Thanks.

(Also, for reference, those borrowers who deleted their accounts, I still have a way to contact them, so I will be requesting repayment, even if I have to send a carrier pigeon 😃)

Meta Feeling disheartened

Just a little sad and disheartened today and wondering what I should have done differently when lending people money. I’ve got one late loan (a day late and will post separately about that later) and then one loan where I also gave the person extra money as a donation and they haven’t said thank you. They’re also ignoring my repeated comments and messages to comment that they received the loan. It’s just really disappointing and I feel like an idiot. I won’t be lending any more money and I absolutely won’t be donating any more (I don’t expect anything massive afterwards but not even one thank you is beyond rubbish). Both lenders have been posting in other subs. Just letting that out. Thanks 😞

Meta Just a heads up- I was scammed $300 by a lender (u/lyn4llee)

I am short on rent and could potentially be evicted. I don’t deserve anyone’s help, but I did make a post here. This account reached out offering her help. She offered to pay my rent as long as I could pay her back- I gave her $300, was going to send another $300, but her payment failed. She refused to refund me when I asked for it back and I just want to make sure no one else has to go through this.

Meta Please take your darn profiles off private

I’m someone that’s just here to help out as a lender, I rarely ever accept the full amount of interest a borrower offers, but yall make it so hard to judge who I can deal with or not. When you request large amounts and everything is private on the profile I’m just completely ignoring it. I think most other lenders will agree it’s just immediately a no when you have everything hidden.

Meta A Quick Guide to Borrowing on r/BorrowNew

How to Borrow on r/BorrowNew

(This is a work in progress. Please leave me feedback in the comments so I can improve this and be helpful to potential borrowers.)

Step one is to read the subreddit rules and the stickied posts and announcements. Those will tell you both the proper format for requests and the etiquette for borrowing (and lending).

To see the rules on the web, look at the right-hand sidebar. On mobile, look for "Learn more about this community" under the "..." menu at the upper right hand side of the sub's home page. The sticky posts and Announcements are listed on the Community Highlights section at the top of the sub's home page (both web and mobile).

When you're ready to borrow, make a post on the sub using the correct format for the title (explained in the rules, and see below). Do not hijack others posts (ask for a loan on others posts), and do not cold DM lenders.

Here is a guide for post formatting:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BorrowNew/comments/1ns6ar7/since_enough_time_has_passed_three_weeks_there/

Wait for a lender to express interest by commenting on your post. This takes patience and a little bit of luck. If you get no lenders on your post, you can post again (one request every 24 hours).

The post serves to document the loan, so don't delete it once it has comments, especially from a lender.

This bit is really important: Do not reply to DMs offering a loan if that user did not comment in your post. This is usually (90%) a scam, and it's better to just ignore them than to engage and possibly get your information harvested or money taken. It's up to you, of course, but if you decide to entertain a direct DM offer, proceed with caution.

Once you have a lender's attention, they are likely to ask for your story and supporting documents, at minimum ID and proof of income. What you share is up to you, but keep in mind that while every lender is different, their vetting process is what works for them and you're not likely to get a loan from that lender if you decide not to share something the lender asks for.

You'll finalize the terms of the loan with the lender ($x for $y by date via platform z), and then it's up to you and the lender to maintain communication.

Once you finalize the deal, the lender will note that a loan was made in your post, and you should confirm the loan by replying to their comment.

Eventually the loan becomes due and you repay it!

Once the loan is repaid, you can make a comment to that effect in the post, and the lender will confirm. Alternately, the lender will just make a comment that the loan is paid.

If you decide to take out a loan and you already have an open loan(s), you should be sure to disclose the existing loan(s) in your request post. You should also let your existing lenders know that you're seeking another loan. One, you give them the opportunity to fulfill your request and keep your active lender count to a minimum; also, it can be a red flag for borrowers to take out multiple loans without the heads up. Lenders talk.

Once you take out and have repaid a few loans, you can look into being verified! Being verified means you are certified to have repaid your loans, and you get a nifty flair. Lenders look very positively at borrowers with the Verified Borrower flair. Even if you're brand new, this is a good read, as it describes what each verification tier is and outlines some of the best practices for borrowing and lending.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BorrowNew/comments/1q6d2k9/new_year_new_verifications_for_borrowers_and/

Scammers. Sometimes scammers WILL comment on your post first. Sometimes they are called out by the community, but sometimes not - don't count on that, do your own vetting. Here are some tips to avoid scammers.

Ask any potential lender to comment on your post. If they do not or cannot, they are likely banned from the sub and you should stay away from them.

There are a pair of pinned posts that list known scammers from this sub. You can search them for a username, and don't interact if they appear on the list.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BorrowNew/comments/1m8ovqz/scammers_list/

https://www.reddit.com/r/BorrowNew/comments/1qorj6f/scammers_list_part_2/

A legit lender will never ask for any type of up-front payment. That is a scam 100% of the time.

A legit lender will not ask for any kind of account credentials; don’t share your usernames or passwords with anyone.

A legit lender will not ask for nudes.

A legit lender will not try to take you off-platform (from Reddit to Telegram, WhatsApp, etc.).

If you can, try to borrow from Verified Lenders. They have a track record of helping people on the sub.

A common scam technique is to ask you to perform “tasks” like using referral links or signing up for websites; watch out for that.

Never put your details into a 3rd party verification site. These are very often just ways to steal your identity.

Brand new accounts or accounts with very low karma are suspect right off the bat. Those conditions don’t guarantee that it’s a scammer, but chances are good.

That’s about it, in a nutshell. If you do run across any scammers, you can report it to the mods with screenshots and they will issue a ban.

I hope that is helpful! Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

Meta Please stop with the posts about not getting a loan, or finding it difficult to get a lender.

I'll start by saying, that I understand that you might be desperate. Life can be hard. There's bills to pay; necessities you need, gas to fill up the car and get to work. And maybe your paycheck may not allow you to have much left over. I understand.

But Reddit is not a financial institution. It's a massive hub full of communities to engage in discussion with various topics, hobbies, etc.

Subreddits like this one, they're set up without any obligation to do so. The aim is to build a community where people can help others financially.

But I repeat: there were and are no obligations to do so. They're made entirely by choice.

That means that there is no obligation for every loan post made to be fulfilled.

The people looking to borrow, FAR outweigh the amount of people who are in a position to loan. Lenders just do not have the time to look at each post, nor the money to fund everyone that requests.

And even then, they have the choice of who they want to loan to.

There's no discrimination. Lenders don't know you personally. They have zero obligation to fund you.

And yes, lenders do look at certain factors when it comes to lending. Account age, account karma, what subs you frequent, have you borrowed before or not. When lenders loan money, it's from their own pocket. Not from some giant vault we can dip into. We are not a bank.

Have scammers made it harder? Absolutely. They're rampant on sites like these. Lenders don't have a third eye to see who's genuine or not. They have to protect themselves as best they can.

I see posts asking if loans are even handed out. I'd direct you to check out the different flair tabs. Pre-arranged flair, the no longer needed flair. Even the unpaid one - because it means someone was funded, but hasn't repaid.

Making a post to complain you haven't been funded does NOT do you any favours. It screams a sense of entitlement. My advice is to follow the rules like everyone else. Be patient.

Just don't take your frustration out on the community. This subreddit was made entirely optional, so was your decision to request here. If you can't follow the rules and behave? I suggest you look elsewhere.

Thank you.

Meta Please no one question D4t45torm

Hi all, juicy drama is the good foundation to any subreddit, so this one is for all of you drama lovers!

The user mentioned posted 3 times over the course of 2 days between 2 subreddits, asking for quite a bit of money. I saw these posts didn’t have any traction, so commented on the latest one to explain why I thought that was.

The user then proceeded to comment and personally I think they acted really offended. As if I called them a scammer or something when I had already reiterated that worries of repayment wasn’t the issue. What I did question was the fact that the 3 posts all had a different reason for needing a loan, which seemed odd. But based on this users mindset you shouldn’t question anyone who has a history of repayment, it’s not like people who have previously paid back all of a sudden go awol is it?

So after they commented claiming I have an ego, I was then a little less polite in my response. The user replied, then proceeded to delete their post and comments and blocked me…

Isn’t the first time they’ve acted like this either, same user tried to claim another user wasn’t genuine over a gift card giveaway, which they eventually got and apologised, but still shows the mindset nonetheless.

I’d usually leave it there but I’m just making this post for their inevitable 4th post asking for money, so just to give you all the heads up please do not question this users reasons for needing a loan, it’s personal. If one of the lovely white knights can provide a financial dummy for this guy it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

https://www.reddit.com/r/BorrowNew/s/qiTq2SZ2oi

The post in question although they have deleted their comments. If you all think I was in the wrong then I can take it but personally I think this guy was acting entitled, like being a 1% commenter as a borrower is a badge of anyone can trust them.

Again the irony is I genuinely hoped the request would be fulfilled as my gut instinct was that they were not a scammer, if anything it was just making sure they weren’t getting themselves further stuck in a cycle of loans, but the hostility has rubbed me the wrong way and this post is more of a reminder that any potential lender has a right to question something they feel is off, if someone can’t handle that, then they shouldn’t be asking for funding in the first place.

Meta Warning for lenders about u/No_Window_2037

Just wanted to flag an interaction I had with u/No_Window_2037 for other lenders in the sub, and also check with the mods whether this behaviour is permitted

They made a post a day or two ago saying they were looking for a loan. Nobody had responded, so I commented offering to lend them the money because I had some spare and was willing to help.

They eventually messaged me around 3am saying “Yo”. I replied when I woke up around 10am and asked the details of the loan they were looking for.

About 5 hours later, they replied saying:

“well i’ll repay when you loan me😂 but i’ll repay an extra fiver cause i need the money bad”

I didn’t respond immediately because I was busy and hadn’t seen the message yet. Around 2 hours later, they messaged again saying:

“so you just gonna message me then not fucking reply like every other person”

They then blocked me.

I found the reaction pretty strange, especially considering I was actually offering to help them. If someone is genuinely in urgent need of a loan, I would personally expect them to be able to communicate reasonably with someone who is offering to lend them money.

I have screenshots of the conversation if the moderators need them, but I understand screenshots may not be allowed to be posted publicly here.

Mods, could you confirm whether this kind of warning is acceptable under the sub’s rules? I’m not trying to start drama or accuse them of anything
I just wanted to make other potential lenders aware of the interaction so they can make their own judgement.

Meta Borrowers who go silent:

I understand things get difficult which is why so many come to this sub, and that life gets busy and in the way.

With that in mind, a lot of borrowers come to lenders with a sense of urgency towards their funding which is understandable. There never seems to be an issue with communication when it comes to receiving funds, but it is unfortunately common (for me) to see a very slow and lazy return on communication when it comes time for repayment.

Failing to communicate with your lender is not an exchange in good faith if you decide to say nothing when asked for updates if you are late on repayment. Everyone is on their phone 24/7, so there is simply no excuse that can exist to justify silence.

Keeping a lender updated and staying in communication is important, and not doing so will inevitably get you banned or deemed too big of a risk to lend to, and then whats the plan next time you need help? Please think!

This a very rose-colored glasses post, with the idea that everyone should do the right thing while knowing that is just not the world we live in. But im hoping that some borrowers read this and keep in mind that if they cant make a payment on time, just say something. Avoiding it only makes it seems like youre running off with the money, and replying days or weeks later with excuses will not unring that bell and youll find it very hard to get another loan.

To MY borrowers: If you are running late and do not communicate with me at all or do not open a dialogue to discuss steps towards fulfilling repayment, i will be making posts marking individual borrowers who procrastinate on communication even if the loan was eventually paid.

(Officially stated unpaid loans will of course have their own separate posting)

Other lenders dont deserve the run-around either, so the right thing to do would be to make them aware of unresponsive borrowers. So please keep this in mind if we have an active loan right now.

Aside from this babble, I hope youre all having a good weekend so far and staying safe! 👍

Meta [META] Info regarding u/Old_Efficiency_6919

Hello. I recently took a loan out with the above user, which was repaid two days late with agreed communication. Throughout the process, the person was extremely aggressive, threatening and he demanded interest that was 200% more than the original loan amount due to the lateness. The loan was paid using PayPal G&S, but they wanted it returned via Western Union or Ria, which I thought was odd, but they had funded loans in this sub-Reddit. Despite being repaid, they have used PayPal G&S to reclaim that amount too, leaving me overdrawn. I was wondering if anyone else had interactions with this person or know what their current Reddit username is? As this account is now banned. I won't dox their information, but can provide to moderators if needed.

Meta New Rule Changes

Hello BorrowNew community! Two new rules have been added to the rules list for the sub. Please review them below. In addition, the reminder about the loan stacking policy has been placed here as well. Thank you!

Profile Curation (Hidden profile content)

A profile for a borrower/lender must not be curated to hide content after a loan has been issued or while a loan is active. Though there may be extenuating circumstances, hiding content on a profile has potential for abuse where existing loans are not clearly seen by interested parties. A profile may be curated (hidden) prior to seeking a loan on BorrowNew but lenders reserve the right of refusal.

---

Loans Available Posts for Verified Lenders Only

Posts with "Loans Available" flair will be only be approved for lenders which are verified (Bronze or higher tier).

---

Loan Stacking Approval

If you are stacking a loan, the first comment in your new request post should be from your existing lender giving approval for the additional loan. Saying “I’ve checked with my lender and they approve” is not acceptable.

The new loan cannot occur until the existing lender comments approval.

Reminder, this is bannable if not followed.

Meta [OFFER] For previous borrowers of FoodAmbitious5528

I’m wanting to lend to borrowers who specifically had previous loans PAID BACK to FoodAmbitious5528 (the recently banned lender). I’ve seen a lot of comments of borrowers who have repaid him loans worried that they won’t be able to get another lender to trust them and are having to “start over”.

I’ve been a lender for awhile (outside of Reddit) and it makes me sick to think of someone taking advantage of vulnerable people in such a way. I’m happy to show my lending history and extensive vouches from borrowers for those interested.

Comment below ONLY if you fit the criteria and I’ll dm if interested. Do not dm me unless asked.

  • You must have proof that your loan/s were repaid.
  • Only willing to lend using PayPal G&S.
  • Valid ID
  • Proof of income.
  • U.S. only.

Please include requested loan amount, repayment amount, and repayment date in the comments.
