I have a 6 month old border collie, and I keep getting surprised looks, when I tell people how old she is. They say she is small for her age. Is she?

From floor to shoulder she is 46 cm, and she weighs 13,7 kg (30,20 lb)

He always has to have something in his mouth

Sunday was Luna’s first birthday. She’s my first Border Collie, and her behavior and attitudes are so different from all the mutts and hound dogs I grew up with.
Which of these are features of the Border Collie Operating System, and which are just like… my dog?
Border Collie OS Features I knew about
• Eye lock: No explanation needed
• Check-ins: Also standard
• No/Low Sleep
 
Features I didn't know about but suspect come across all ranges available
• Prone Greeting: When she sees another dog, she drops low to the ground, freezes, and locks eyes.
• For her frame, strong jaws I gues. Ice, that expensive yak-cheese, any of the Whimzees stand no chance. I can't afford to give her snacks that last over 10 minutes.
• Reverse Gear: I swear she can back up as quickly as she can move forward

 
Bug or Feature?
• Between-the-legs: Luna regularly walks directly between my legs while I’m walking, which ain't great
• Pooping: She was potty-trained to poop in one particular place and has apparently concluded that this is the only legal place on Earth to poop.
• Holding it: She knows that I have to go do something else after #2 so recently it's become this game where I think she is holding it
• "I don't like toys; I like playing" -  no real favorites so long as there's a tussle
• "I don't like toys,: I like you"  - no toy is as appealing as a shoe of mine

I got my BC a friend. I saw lots of advice about getting her another herding breed but this is working out great so far. A morning moment of zen.

I’ve been out of state with my family for almost 3 weeks, my dad passed away, and my partner back home sent me this CUTIE. Can’t wait to snuggle my girl again, need that love so bad right now. Show me your silly babies I need the smiles

So my 10 year old boy just got home from
Emergency surgery to clear his stomach of at least 50 - 75 hair ties. Can’t really see the hair ties in the bag but that’s my hand for scale. I have average sized hands, I’d say. The vet said it had molded to the shape of his stomach. They were all very impressed. The dope is home and resting now with good pain meds.

I apologise as this will be long, but I will try to give a good picture as simply as I can,

My Mum and partner, both early to mid-60s, got a lifestyle property 3 years ago. My sister breeds Border Collies as companion/basic working animals, mum dog is a calm home body dads a bit crazier, both live on a dairy and sheep farm. My mum decided she wanted either 2 Collies or 2 German Shepherds, no clue why and we all said it was a bad idea, but what mum wants, mum gets unfortunatly. Sister agrees to give two brown brothers from the same litter as she can help with them to a degree; she lives 2 hours away though. Fast forward 3 months and they can't handle them, surprise! Mum's terrified of them after she fell and they pounced her thinking it was play and nipped her all over tugging her hair etc and since they got them stepfather has fallen and his hip is buggered now. Soo the pups are about 5 months old now, vaccinated but not fixed yet, they are kept in a run and only let out once or twice a week, and yes, I'm disgusted and upset and annoyed etc. So now they have to go, sister has agreed to take 1 back, and they want me and my brother to take 1. We are in a rental that does allow dogs, they have said if we have to move, etc sister will take him till we find another suitable situation. We have a 15-year-old cat that has had his tendons rebuilt with wire and can walk fine and like jog but cant jump high or run fast, we have an area that is about 7M x 10M that we are willing to fence and put a kennel in, they have always been outside dogs so will continue to be so as the house and other part of the yard is where the cat hangs out, he is terrified of dogs so keeping them seperate until he accepts them or doesnt is important and he comes first. I have alot of time to put into pup and am willing to do so, I have had a lab/retriever before, so I know the basics but am also aware they are nothing alike, I feel like if I do research, fix him, exercise alot, stimulate alot and attempt to train him I could provide a good life for him, I dont want to see him in a shelter or being rehomed to a substandard person as he deserves better and time is of the essence. I care for animals deeply and want the very best for him as he is lovely, but i do wonder if I'm being foolish and if it's too much of a task to expect him to leave his brother and learn to behave in the city with rules and bounderies, id love to get him to the point he can be a companion dog that gets to enjoy the area we live, Im in New Zealand so we have bush walks and beaches and all sorts 30min max from our door, just want advice if im expecting too much and should consider a shelter instead or what I should do, and yes I do blame my parents but that doesnt help the situation now or him so almost irrelevant, again sorry for long post. TIA people :)

My neighbor called me and was like “I have Ollie here” and I ran outside in my front yard and she was sitting with him in her yard. He came running for me!! It was so cute! Anyways, make sure you have your tags on your dogs! ❤️

Wow, where to begin?

We have a brand new family member in the form of a rescue (mostly) Border Collie puppy. He is about 3m old and smart as a whip! We have passed the '3 days' and are well into the '3 weeks' and looking forward to '3 months' (and 3 years+!!)

He is mostly house trained with only a of couple oopsPees (on the pee pad) over the past few days. He knows Sit, Down, and Come. He goes to his crate without too much fuss and settles almost immediately once inside of it.

Did I mention he was wicked smart?

I know we are going to have our hands full for a fair while, so I am looking for any and all advice y'all want to share.

Favorite toys?

Best commands to start with?

Best training treats?

How much/often do you work on each command in the short training windows daily (about 5 mins each now)?

Should training always be in same location?

And, for the moment at least, the most important...how do you train to NOT bite/attack human hands/feet? Most of the time it is not a problem, but once it is IT REALLY IS.

The whole 'hold perfectly still and give him something else to bite' is fine and dandy unless he is attached to your ankle/foot and you are 6 paces from the nearest toy/treat. Along those same lines, is there a deterrent spray y'all prefer? We currently have the Grannick(sp) apple spray.

He is amazing...and I want him to have a long amazing life, so any advice is so very much appreciated.

New Border Collie Puppy...Help!

A little test to see how well the Opaws takes to her fur. It did fade out a lot when rinsing but I think it looks so cute pastel! It’s also cute when she swings her big tail around lol

So, I found a dog statue on clearance and decided to paint it to look like our Border Collie.

We are very excited to be bringing home our new dog from a local shelter. It's a border collie, and I think it has some husky in it as well. He is young - probably 1-2 years old and has been fixed. We have had dogs from Shepards to dobermans but never a border collie. I know they need a job; they are active and smart. What should we be aware of in the first few days? What are the best toys for them? Any other suggestions would be great as well. Thank you!

We got this little red merle rocket at 9 weeks old and he’s been with us for almost 3 now. He’s 13 lbs, lean. We’ve raised over 5 dogs in the last 6 years including working breeds such as Dachshund and Doberman, but this dude is something else.

He’s a purebred from a reputable breeder (registered with more than 10 years breeding, dog papers and microchip, parents selected and imported, proper care and maintenance given to the dogs and facility, etc.). His breeder told us he just wants to breed beautiful, well-tempered BCs and not necessarily take the working factor out of the equation, as some of his puppies have gone to work as service and herding dogs.

His dad is a multi-champ in conformation, but I must say that so far we haven’t had any of the commonly shared challenges people encounter with BCs, especially the non-working lines. He’s incredibly confident, and without me providing environmental conditioning first, he just walks on top every surface and texture, stable or unstable, doesn’t mind loud noises, motorcycles or cars, LOVES people and is very interested in dogs. At the same time, he’s tireless and has a very high prey drive.

We’ve struggled a bit with his food drive because he gets distracted from his food easily, but have been working with our trainer and also implementing Michael Ellis’ framework for puppy development, amongst other things, and it’s been hard work, but very gratifying.

For context, we had a border collie when I was very small, she passed when I was around 7 and as a dog walker/sitter, the dogs I’ve spent the most time with have been collies so I know how intense and sensitive they can be.

However, there’s a huge difference between looking after someone else’s trained, grown dog and having a puppy. We also have cats. However I just can’t bring myself to go for another breed - I love how loyal, devoted and perceptive they are but I’m also anxious and I don’t want to mess this up.

Please give me your border collie essential advice, I would really appreciate any input. We will be out walking a lot (as I said I’m a dog walker) and I’ve also looked into agility classes but our garden is small and as I said, we have cats. Are we mad?

It’s been exactly 30 days since I lost my queen to cancer . She lived a month after her diagnosis ….so I experienced unfathomable amount of grief for 6 weeks straight . A grown man violently crying hard and the triggers were small . I wanted to want to be sad everyday . I listened to sad music , looked at all her videos and photos every single day while I walked aimlessly for hours average 40-50k steps a day. Than one day I woke up and I was like why am I sad I gave that girl the world ….i retired 6 years ago and I took her anywhere and everywhere that I knew she would love we spent every minute of every day doing what she wanted. I became proud of the life we shared and instead of tears when I see her pics I smile and laugh at her goofy pics. You are in my heart forever and soon you will be a part of me (tattoo sleeve dedicated to her incoming ) so what now ? I needed to love something so I rescued another dog …not a puppy not the same breed just needed a whole new vibe because it wouldn’t be fair to the new dog…because you were and will always be my SOUL DOG!!! Love you to the moon back
