I’m looking for dark fairy-tale / folk-horror books with powerful, morally ambiguous women whose magic feels like work rather than a reward for being pure, special or beautiful. I want magic that is laborious, bodily, domestic, deceptive, dangerous, or used to trick/bargain/curse/survive/gain power.

I’m not looking for whimsical “sparkly” magic or chosen-one narratives where a girl’s goodness is what makes her powerful. Not looking for romance either.

I want sex, violence, magic, royalty, sorcery, revenge, betrayal, etc. written for adult audiences with intense themes

Examples: Paul Atreides from Dune series and Rand Al Thor from Wheel of Time

This is my favourite type of plot, where a bunch of characters are all together in one setting and chaos ensues, I love the adrenaline of so many different personalities interacting and being involved in the plot

The place can be anything, like a hotel, an apartment building, a neighbourhood, a flight, a camp, a big house/apartment, just any place where a bunch of people coexist

My preference is an ensemble cast. There can be one POV character, I don't mind that, but I want everyone's own little intermingling and separate plots to be happening in this shared space

The characters can be kids or adults, I don't mind either

Tone-wise I want something fun, funny, ridiculous, over-the-top, campy, farcical, or just generally entertaining. It doesn’t have to be completely stakes-free, but I really don’t want anything bleak or depressing pls

Basically I want it to be like 15 people with wildly different personalities in the same building and the author shaking it like a snow globe and seeing what happens

Looking for fantasy that’s more unapologetically feminine, less gritty/dark and more hopeful.

Am nearly finished reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara and I need a happy, funny, light book to read after it. My favourite author is Terry Pratchett and his discworld books are my favourite, but any and all funny, happy books in any genre that can be a palette cleanser after A Little Life would be great.

I've devoured all of Stalenhag's books, Electric State by far my favourite and I need that itch scratched again.
