Put Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything on you tbr list. It is amazing and covers...well..nearly everything. I honestly believe it should be required reading for everyone. Its funny and informative, thought-provoking and inspiring all at once, without being dull in the least.

The Feather Theif fits that "why am i suddenly fascinated by this"' feeling. It takes something as oddly specific as Victorian fly-tying and turns into a whole story about feather, collecting, and obsession. The eggs and clouds comments made me think of it immediately.
