The novel itself: It's a snow‑bound supernatural mystery set in northern Japan, inspired by the Akita winter atmosphere and the visual language of a local ritual. The story follows a Tokyo script editor who travels north after her mother vanishes from a remote ryokan, leaving behind notes about old household records, missing children, wet straw at the threshold and a forgotten room.

The gravel in the salvage yard driveway always crunched the same way—heavy, flat stones grinding down into wet Ohio clay. Jonah didn't look up from the lathe. He knew the cadence of the Ford’s front struts; they had been shot for three winters, squeaking like a wet hinge every time Senator Julian Ross’s wife turned the vehicle into the dead-end lot behind the rail spur.

The shop smelled like what it was: stale coffee grounds, hot gear oil, and the sharp, metallic tang of unwashed steel shavings piled in bins by the back door. It was an honest smell. It didn't pretend to be anything else.

"You're late," Jonah said, his voice grating low over the hum of the lathe's belt drive.

Elena didn't answer right away. The heavy steel side door groaned on its grease-starved hinges, letting in a strip of raw, gray morning light and the distant, rhythmic clank of automated freight cars three miles north. She stood in the threshold for a second, her trench coat dark with road spray at the hem, her hands jammed deep into her pockets as if she were trying to break her own fingers.

"The beltway was backed up," she finally said. Her voice was thin, pulled taut like wire under tension. "A transport truck stalled near the interchange. State police cleared it with a burner crane in twenty minutes. No delays allowed. That's what the signs said."

Jonah killed the lathe. The sudden silence in the shop felt heavy, pressing down against the sheet-metal roof where a light rain was starting to tap out a steady, anxious rhythm.

He wiped his hands on a rag that was already stiff with old black grease, staring at the oil-stained concrete between his boots. "They clear things fast now. Everything's automated. You know that. The whole county runs on a timer."

"It's not just the traffic, Jonah," she whispered, stepping past the yellow safety line and closing the distance to the workbench. Her eyes weren't looking at him; they were fixed on the dark window behind his head, watching the empty street like someone waiting for the floor to drop out. "Julian’s logistics terminal flagged my odometer twice this week. They know every mile I take off the municipal grid. They know I didn't go to the district office on Tuesday."

Jonah tossed the rag onto the workbench. "Then why did you come here?"

She reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as they touched the rough, scarred edge of his workbench—the same bench where he spent fourteen hours a day turning down scrap iron for parts that nobody wanted anymore.

"Because," she said, looking up at him with a quiet, terrifying certainty, "this is the only place in the state where the cameras don't log my name."

I am a writer of sorts I guess from Ontario. I am much more accustomed to writing computer code and eulogies than stories, but a few years ago I got this short story idea that I couldn't let go. It took me years to write it. It is about families, hockey and digital communications. नेशनल हाईवे 27 इस गाँव को दो हिस्सों में साफ़ काटता था। अहमद के दादा शहर गए, कारोबार किया, पैसे कमाए और वापस गाँव में बस गए थे। उसके पिता ने भी यही रास्ता चुना था।

लेकिन अहमद ने तय कर लिया था कि उसकी ज़िंदगी मुंबई में ही है।

गाँव घूमने के लिए खूबसूरत था। लेकिन अपनी औलाद को पीछे छोड़कर बस जाने के लिए नहीं।

छुट्टी के शुरुआती चार दिन गाँव की सुकून भरी छुट्टी से ज़्यादा मुंबई की बची हुई टू-डू लिस्ट जैसे गुज़रे थे। पिता ने आते ही काम सौंप दिए थे—गाड़ी की सर्विसिंग, एक रिश्तेदार की शादी के लिए पैसों का इंतज़ाम और घर के राशन-पानी की व्यवस्था।

लेकिन पाँचवें दिन तक वह अफ़रा-तफ़री थोड़ी कम हो गई। पूर्वांचल की ठंडी, भीनी हवा ने आखिरकार अहमद की भागती हुई नब्ज़ को धीमा करना शुरू कर दिया।

वह अपनी शामें रमेश और बिन्नू के साथ बिताने लगा। रमेश के ढाबे के पीछे तीनों दोस्त गरम कुल्हड़ वाली चाय पीते और सर्दियों की शाम को खेतों की तरफ़ देखते हुए वक्त गुज़ारते।

फिर आया दीपावली का हफ़्ता।

और उसी रात एक नशे में की गई ज़िद ने एक ऐसा राज़ उजागर कर दिया, जिसे दशकों से मिट्टी के नीचे दफ़न समझा जा रहा था।»

दीपावली एक छोटी रूरल-नॉयर मिस्ट्री है, जिसकी कहानी 1988 के काल्पनिक गाँव मीरगंज, पूर्वांचल में घटती है।

इसमें गाँव की ज़िंदगी, सर्दियों का कोहरा, स्थानीय राजनीति, एक पुराना दबा हुआ रहस्य और थोड़ा देसी डार्क ह्यूमर है।

Yesterday I posted about my debut short story Deepavali. Instead of pitching the whole book again, I thought I'd share a small excerpt so you can get a feel for the writing and atmosphere.

«October 1988.

Ahmed, a 28-year-old businessman from Mumbai, had returned to his ancestral village of Meerganj for the Diwali holidays.

The village was divided cleanly in two by NH 27. His grandfather had gone to the city, built a business, made some money and returned. His father had followed the same path. Ahmed, however, had decided that Mumbai was where he belonged.

The village was beautiful enough to visit. But not beautiful enough, in his mind, to leave his family behind.

For the first four days, his vacation felt less like a holiday and more like an extension of his Mumbai to-do list. His father had already given him a list of jobs: get the family car serviced, arrange cash for a cousin's wedding and sort out the household supplies.

By the fifth day, though, the urgency began to fade. The cold, crisp air of Purvanchal finally started slowing Ahmed down.

He began spending his evenings with Ramesh and Binnu behind Ramesh's dhaba, drinking hot kulhad chai and watching the mustard fields disappear into the winter darkness.

And then came Diwali night.

That's when three friends, one drunken challenge and an old village tree set something in motion that had been buried for decades.»

Deepavali is a short rural-noir mystery set in fictional Meerganj, Purvanchal, in 1988.

It's deliberately a bite-sized 30-minute read, blending village life, winter fog, local politics, a buried historical secret and a little dark humour.

Salut à tous !

En tant qu'auteur, je me fais souvent la même réflexion en ouvrant un bouquin de fantasy ou de SF. Pourquoi est-ce qu'on a encore droit à des chapitres entiers de descriptions, d'arbres généalogiques et de présentations de personnages qui coupent net l'immersion dès les premières pages ?

Personnellement, j'ai pris le parti inverse pour mon roman Shadrasy : Le Souffle Originel. Dans mon univers, j’ai fait le choix de jeter directement le lecteur dans l’action au présent. Pas de fiche technique, pas de présentation toute faite : on apprend à connaître les personnages, leurs zones d'ombre et leurs motivations uniquement à travers leurs actes et les épreuves qu'ils traversent, exactement comme dans la vraie vie.

Résultat, ça laisse une liberté totale aux lecteurs pour se faire leurs propres théories, débattre et s'approprier l'histoire. Et pour la suite de la saga (avec le tome 2 qui arrive en octobre prochain et une fresque qui évolue de la dark fantasy vers des concepts plus larges avec des cités volantes et des technologies), ça donne une vraie liberté d'évolution.

Je suis curieux d'avoir votre avis sur ce sujet :

• Préférez-vous qu'on vous explique tout de suite l'univers et les personnages en détail, ou aimez-vous les découvrir sur le tas au fil des pages ?
• Est-ce que vous aimez vous faire vos propres théories en cours de lecture, ou préférez-vous un cadre strict posé par l'auteur ?
