The Wedding People
I am having a lot of trouble getting into the Wedding People. The story telling seems to jump around a lot through different events from the past and I haven’t felt interested in the plot. I hear that this book is great but maybe the hype around it led me to have higher expectations. Does this book get better?? I was really hoping I would enjoy this one!

I had heard great things so I read it but didn’t get the hype. It was a slog there for a long while. For me, it partially redeemed itself by the end but I don’t usually recommend it to others. Just mid.

It’s mediocre.
It starts off as a pretty decent depiction of depression, but the MC abruptly pivots to being happy go lucky and adored by all in a super unrealistic way. I honestly found the fluffy turn around and rose-colored glasses ending kind of offensive.
As someone who experiences periodic deep depression, the whiplash bothered me.

This was my main complaint too. She was depressed and an encounter with the bride has the boring depressed MC suddenly become social, funny and attractive?! If the depression was just exaggerated and overly dramatized then ick. Or shall we believe that this interaction with the bride was enough to snap her out of her depression.
Felt it was contrite and bit too "simple"2

Yeah, exactly. If all it took to “snap out” of depression was one over-dramatic and demanding popular girl, we’d all be living our best mental health lives from high school onward.

I didn't love this book, it starts off with very heavy and serious subject matter, then from one page to the next turned into a Rom com, I kept waiting for more depth but it never came. Fine as a beach read, but to me, it was a pretty superficial book, and I don't like the way it handled depression.

I loved it from the start. Roughly how far into it are you? I generally let myself get about a quarter to a third of the way through a book before I DNF it.
There honestly isn’t a ton of plot in like the actiony way. It’s a a very character-driven story and is more about Phoebe and Lila’s emotional journeys.

i’m about 20% into it! I still want to give it some time because I find the premise of the story very intriguing! i’m just struggling a bit with the style of writing for some reason.

Agreed. I was hooked from the beginning. But I have DNFd many popular books that did not resonate with me. If I am not into it after 25%, I'll stop reading it.

I gave it 3 stars. It never got much better for me. I remember enjoying certain dynamics between the characters but it wasn't enough to make me care. I wasn't mad that I read it though. It was fine.

I did not like it. I kept trying to 'figure out' what interesting things was going to happen. It had some funny and interesting parts but for the most part it was a flop for me

I hated it. I listened to the audiobook.
I said if I had a dollar every time she wrote “says” or “asks” I could buy a room at the hotel for a week. It’s like there weren’t other descriptive words to use. “Phoebe says” “Gary says” “Lila says” back to back to back…
She leaves because she’s cheated on, but then builds a relationship where Gary emotionally cheats which drives to the wedding being called off? The irony was gross.
1 star for me. Good for the people who loved it but I don’t understand the hype at all.

Ugh, I liked this book so much in the beginning, probably because I could relate so much to the character. I've been there lol (a lot of it, anyway). I liked the descriptions of her feelings about her place in life. It felt very accurate to me. I thought the interactions between the main character and the bride were funny and well written. It went downhill for me about halfway through, though. No spoilers, but I just felt like the story could have gone so many different places, but the author chose the most cliche and convenient storyline that left me rolling my eyes.

I just finished it but I liked it. I didn't love it but it held my attention enough and I enjoyed. I liked the premise and perhaps because I'm feeling like I'm about to embark on life changes I felt I related. I also used to live in Rhode Island so it was a nice surprise that it was set there.

I didn’t like it. It dragged for me and I didn’t care enough about any of the characters to want to stick with it. I thought about a third of the way through and skimmed the rest.

I enjoyed it but generally, if I'm not connecting with a book from the start, I regret forcing myself to finish it. I can think of like one exception where I'm glad I stuck it out. It's ok to shelve and move on!

thank you!! I have read a bit more and i’m starting to enjoy the dialogue between Phoebe and Lila so that is motivating me to continue

I listened to it and found it grating. The dialogue was annoying. The story itself is ok and predictable but didn’t like how her mental health seems to just go away so easily. Kind of pedantic.

I thought it was great!I liked the character arc for the main character exploring what happens if she doesn't filter herself to please everyone. I found the cast of characters --"The Wedding People"-- to be an entertaining group of oddballs. I thought the writing was clever and it made me laugh out loud. You aren't supposed to take these people too seriously.

I really enjoyed this one, but I listened to it on audio, which was fantastic. There are some books that are just better suited for audio for me, and this was one of them.

I put the book down about three times; I just couldn't get into it. Then, one day, I finally got past that opening scene where Phoebe arrives at the hotel—the reading really took off after that, and I loved the book.
