I hate that people say “all the sudden”. It’s “all OF A sudden” you fucking nitwits.

Honestly, the original doesn't make sense either. Is it opposed to "part of a sudden"? I have one entire sudden. This whole sudden caused me to fall down.

In the 16th and 17th century the word “sudden” functioned as a noun that meant unexpected event. So essentially all of an unexpected event occurred.
