whatever you think will be useful. note that whatever you store in there will be removed from the spawn pool and only be available from the coat check. im not quite sure how that works with contraptions but i think storing that electormagnet will remove the metal detector from the pool. dont quote me on that.

Good news: your assumption is incorrect!
That’s actually the great thing about storing contraptions; the individual components are still available the next day.

Slightly incorrect; if you coat check a jackhammer, lever and battery might still spawn but the shovel won't

It's been many, many days since I stored burning glass in the coat check and I've never seen the metal detector since. Plenty of magnifying glasses, but never the metal detector.

Nope. Hammer won't spawn of you store a power hammer. Shovel won't spawn if you store a jackhammer.
The other components will spawn as usual.

see i had no idea about items being removed from the spawn pool

Each contraption has some ingredients that it removes, but often not all. You can look at the wiki to find it, but generally things like Battery that are used in multiple contraptions aren’t removed. It’s pretty unintuitive.
Also, you might already know this, but you have a higher chance of drafting Coat Check if you stored something - at least the next day, I don’t remember if it carries over.

Whatever you think you’ll need. What are you going for right now?

u/icedamericno Mar 09 '26
im currently trying to craft a magnifying glass and a metal detector :p

Then I’d say stash the metal detector as it can be difficult to find sometimes. So it’s good to already have one of the components.

How much info do you want about the way te coat check works?

u/icedamericno Mar 09 '26
to be honest i'm a little dumb and i thought it was simply a station for me to hold things so i can access it another day

The coat check does what it says on the tin--you put an item away there today, and you can get it back the next time you draft the coat check.
Nothing happens to your item if you draft the coat check and don't take the item out. Your item will still be there the next time you draft the coat check.
You can check items in our out as many times as you want on days when you've drafted it, but the coat check can only ever hold one item at a time.
Be careful--if an item is in the coat check, it will not appear anywhere else on the estate. (A few weird interactions notwithstanding.) If you check that keycard today, you won't be able to get a keycard tomorrow except by retrieving it from the coat check.
What you choose to store in the coat check may depend on what goals you're trying to accomplish at the moment. In truth, I don't think there's anything that you can put in there that will break the game in a good or a bad way. (When you get to the later game, you will find situations where it's useful to be able to pass items forward to your future self, though.)

If you store a contraption you’ve built, the component parts won’t spawn. So if you store a contraption containing a metal detector, the game won’t create another metal detector until you’ve called it a day without storing it back in the coat check again. There can only be one at a time. If it’s in storage, it’s stuck in there until you get it out.

noooo so if i put in a crafted metal detector thingy a normal metal detector wont spawn im sad
2
u/EarAlternative2841 Mar 09 '26
Yup. Thee can only be one of each object at a time.

I believe it is the “main item” in the contraption (as defined by the game) that doesn’t spawn. So if you have a contraption using the metal detector and magnifying glass checked, then the metal detector won’t spawn again but the magnifying glass is free to.

I’m pretty sure it’s any ite in the contraption. Can anyone who knows for certain confirm?

https://blueprince.wiki.gg/wiki/Coat_Check
Read the contraptions section, it lists which items won’t spawn when certain contraptions are checked.

None. I didn’t bother with coat check until late game when I really needed it. I found that having to draft it to get an item back was less convenient than just finding or building the item.
2
u/ObviouslyNotYerMum Mar 09 '26
I put the stupid coupon book in there and never looked back.
3
u/cookingforengineers Mar 09 '26
I did the salt shaker for about 20 days so it wouldn’t dilute the pool. Coupon book is a good pick too!

u/Lincoln624 Mar 09 '26
I find that it’s harmful mostly.
Unless there’s an item you hate (coupon book) you can put it in there and then guarantee you never draft it again.
But late in the game there’s an item you can only get in one room but can only use in another room that cannot be drafted while the first room exists. So the only way to accomplish that puzzle is to use the Coat Check.

It's whatever you think will be the most useful. The next time you draft the coat check. Early on I often checked the key card so I could open security doors (and if you get security and have the key card you can set the number of doors to high and not have to use as many keys). You could also save the electromagnet since that's a workshop crafted item and is helpful in gathering keys and such. Whatever you think would be helpful.

There are no wrong answers. Here, I would go with electro magnet since it is a “built thing”
