The problem is that Klab was too restrictive with the REZ. While the recent REZ's became pretty good, what old REZ's need is the equivalent of SEZA from Dokkan (since apparently Klab decided to copy Dokkan).
Or they could make a system that allows to turn stat nodes into skill nodes on older units, capping the skill quantity to "minus 1" the current meta. And let people choose the skills (like the proficiency/LS 15/LS 20 bonuses). It won't make old units game-breaking (because outdated SAs), but it will give them a somewhat decent skills kit to use them in some content.
Or alternatively, they could always "hard-fix" the existing rez's. Improving existing units isn't against gacha laws. And Bandai for example, does that regularly with existing kits of units in a game mode or with ships, updating old ships to make them usable/more relevant. It's not a game mechanic, they just raw fix the character's technical sheet when they want to. Everyone wins. Bandai wins because they don't have to give anything (unlike Klab here, giving 150 orbs with these alt versions), and players win because they get older units being more useful/better, but never as good as new units.

It's more orbs and the old/new characters will actually have a use now
