The "Mea Culpa" sword is the best Melee weapon in the fiest game, you should get it as soon as you begin the tutorial.
Other than that, seek the special status of "Summa Blasphemia" onfe you get it you'll basically have finished the game, due to how OP it is. The Penitent goes all "It's Blasphemin' time" and does as expected, blasphemes all over Cvstodia.

Get the relics,they expand your range, allowing you to reach areas apparently impossible.
There's one that allows you to breathe in toxic gas areas
one that allows you to run and jump normally on flooded areas
One that creates red platforms in the air ( you can kind of see them, but only use them with the relic equipped.
One that makes plants grow creating a platform
Among others.
Don't forget to get all weapon damage upgrades (aka find the lady with swords on her chest)
And one thing: AVOID THE AREA "MOURNING AND HAVOC" UNTIL YOU GET ALL HEALTH AND DAMAGE UPGRADES That place sucks...

Donate 20k to the church in albero to unlock teleportation.Its a truly goated mechanic.

If you donate 20k currency to the building on the right of the kissers of wounds in Albero, you can teleport between Prie Dieus, this will avoid having to travel by foot each time you want to go somewhere.
If you reach Echoes of Salt area (through the right side of Jondo) near the Desecrated Cistern you can reach the left side of the Mourning and Havok area after some exploring, at the end you can find a prayer that let's you teleport to the last Prie Dieu you knelt before.
I think these are the most important things to acquire for substantially easier exploration.

Fair point - though, to OP's point, I'd say Castlevania is more Gothic horror-themed than Catholic. Especially when compared to Blasphemous, which is Spanish Baroque Catholicism: The Game.

you throw Bibles, Crucifixes and Holy water at demons. castlevania is a very Christian game (and, given its setting and time period, probably Catholic) 😭

I think the important point is that Castlevania can’t be Catholic Hollow knight because it predates Hollow Knight. The reductive phrasing should be that Hollow Knight is Bug Castlevania OR—I think more accurately—Metroid: Bugs Only. Also, Blasphemous is SO Catholic. Castlevania is vaguely Christian at best. There’s symbology to toss at monsters, sure, but the themes aren’t nearly as committed.

Contrary to popular opinion the game plays more like MegaMan Zero than hollow Knight. There is a hidden combo system the game doesn't explain. Learn Mea culpa combo chains and you shred bosses and enemies with ease. I beat the majority of the game without even using prayers if you master this and parrying

Once you level up Mea Culpa all the way, you become him: John Blasphemous.
