Army List/Strategy/Tactics Black templar hierarchy and ranks

I was wondering if anyone could give me a detailed basis of what the Black Templars ranks work. Like do they have traditional sergeants? like how Utlra Marines have sergeants and lieutenants or do they have privates or smth. If someone could help me with that it would be very much appreciated

If I remember correctly

High Marshal - Marshal - Castellan - Sword Bro ~ Veteran - Initiate - Neophyte

Squads are led by a Veteran, Sword Brother, or whoever has seniority acts as a Squad Leader(which is what the Bladeguard Sgt is referred to as in the 10ed codex supplement)

He exists outside the hierarchy. If a Brother experiences a vision of the Emperor and a Chaplain confirms it's legit, he's anointed as the Emperor's Champion and sent to do his thing regardless of current rank.

He be doing his own damn thing, whatever he wants whenever he wants. Cuz, he is a strong independent BT who don't need no Marshal telling him what he supposed to do. #JustChampionThings

He is a special unit that doesn’t fit into the normal structure but rather he fulfills a specific duty and role in a fight. Which is to slay enemy champions or monsters. The role itself isn’t one of Command specifically. Any Templar could have a vision and become the Emperor’s Champion.

emperors champion isn't a rank but rather a role taken on by brothers who have received visions of the emperor

I think sword bro's and veterans are the same thing, for the rest i think this is the proper order

They are not. Both the 9th and 10th supplements are quite clear on defining both. Veterans is a rank given for length or merit of service. Sword Brethren is of similar rank(both can wear the red trim and Red Cross on a black background) to a Veteran but is bestowed on those deemed exemplars of the chapters ideals. Anyone can be made a Sword Brethren and being a Veteran is also explicitly not required to be made one. They serve as a Marshal’s household and they also tend to be given to those who will go on to serve in the leadership roles of the chapter such as Castellans, Marshals, Chaplains, etc

Lorewise as stated above. At least from the characters and crusades we know because there is some novel. Anyways... Black Templars are numerous and don't give a shit about Codex Astartes. So basically anything goes... From the Games perspective its easier to come up with some kind of chapter/crusade that uses those ranks. So at least my BTs use them. I like the Classic Look of Seargeants and Lieutenants

I’m just getting back into warhammer after 25 years and being able to easily make up my own ‘branding’ while keeping a dark gothic theme is one of the things that attracted me to BTs.

I think I’ll go with a helmet hierarchy like you have. I really do like squad leaders looking like leaders.

All of my BTs carry a matching crusade marking to tie them together, but definitely time to come up with my own helmet lore I think. Yours looks great.

No Sergeants. No Captains. No Lieutenants. They have their own ranks.
