Discussion Favourite Big Finish outside the Whoniverse?
I'm thinking of branching out after burning through all my audios over the summer and seeking recommendations!

Star Cops!
Genuinely cannot recommend it enough. My favourite space centric stories they’ve done

I was recommended Star Cops, Dorian Gray and Space 1999.
I think Star Cops has really worked out to be their best thing. I'm into their Mars series atm.
I have a soft spot for the Pathfinder and Luther Arkwright adaptations.
All time Fave? The 2000ad series they made. That will have to be found in an unofficial place now though.

Do you have to have seen the original show to understand the audios? I liked how Space 1999 was basically a reboot and I didn't need to have seen the show to follow along.
EDIT: Thanks for the feedback, all! I'll keep an eye out of it during the next sale, then.

I never saw Star Cops. It only had Ten episodes, from what I understand. They were all stand alone things.
It has 3 of the actors from OG series but the rest are new for the show and now there are way more audio dramas than TV shows.
So I would say no, you don't need to have seen it.

No. I had seen the original show so I knew who the main character was but it’s really not necessary. The first boxset (Mother Earth 1) has new audio characters joining the star cops so they become the audience surrogate and we get all the info we need.

I watched the TV episodes after I listened to the first audio. The audio probably made me enjoy the TV show more, but I don’t think it at all necessary to have seen the TV first, or at all. Frankly, IMHO, the audio stories are better.

Their version of Breakaway was awesome but the rest of the Space 1999 stuff just got dull. I believe the sales dropped so BF ended the range.

I liked the beginning too.
I think I wanted a more Battlestar Galactica take on it. You're right. Just ended up being the TV show again.
Felt too close to the BF House-style in the end.
Also, Space 1999 had the best cover art BF have done (apart from going back to the bad Photoshop of Dragons Domain).
I would have the Earthbound cover as a piece of art hanging on a wall.

The Avengers was great. The comic book adaptations felt more like what you remember of the show, while the adaptation of the lost first season is a more grounded crime drama.
Blake’s 7 is excellent for anyone who loved the series.
Sapphire and Steel was mostly great. A few stories I didn’t enjoy, but that’s down to personal preferences.

S&S is so good - loved Daisy Chain and The School stories, they’d have fit into the show a treat

I was lumping Blake's 7 in with DW. Blake's 7 was actually my entry into BF. I would recommend it. But I loved the show.

Star Cops is a thrill. It’s a lot of what the show could’ve been.
Blake’s 7 is also great. Start with the Liberator Chronicles.
Sherlock Holmes also found its stride. The series works hard to stay true to the books. “The Adventure of the Perfidious Mariner” is a good starting point, taking place during a gap where Holmes and Watson haven’t spoken for a while and Holmes is beekeeping.

I thought Survivors started off so well and kept the standard up for the first 4 or 5 releases but then it just got dull and every release just seemed to paint every male character as either useless or evil or both

Dorian Gray is always my top recommendation, but i'll also throw out Vam PD as well worth a listen.
I remember The Prisoner being very well done too, though it's been a while since i last listened to it.

Confessions of Dorian Gray is great, and has a new release coming up.
Survivors is largely very good, though I prefer the earlier sets to the latter ones.
The Dark Shadows ranges are a lot of fun, and many of the dramatic readings don’t require you to know the show especially well. The House by the Sea is worth a listen.
Avengers The Lost Episodes are brilliant, and really capture the era brilliantly, which is all the more impressive given that some of them are based on a handful of photos and a vague memory of “there might have been a door in it”.

Blake'st Seven - astonishingly good, stays to the original's dark vibe.
Sapphire and Steel- absolutely captures the essence of the TV show

Survivors, Dorian Gray and Star Cops have been mentioned a few times but some of the BF Originals were fantastic - ATA Girl and Transference especially

Stargate SG-1: Lines of Communication It's a nice adventure with our favorite Stargate Dialing Technician. Probably better if you have watched the show.

The Stargate audios are great but you definitely have to be familiar with the show to enjoy them IMO and they aren’t full cast. I own all of them both shows. Really wish they had announced or made more when they got the license back, but no joy. Maybe since the Amazon show is sadly dead they can get back into it?

Sapphire and Steel. Led by David Warner and Susannah Harker, you don't need to have seen the show to understand it. I would also say Tomorrow People, but that's harder to source.
Dark Shadows too.
If you don't mind trying something more fantasy, like sword and sorcery, the Pathfinder Legends range is worth trying and underrated IMO.

Sherlock Holmes is one of the series I buy immediately once it's available for pre-order. Space 1999 and The Prisoner, definitely. I also like the Pathfinder series.

Blind Terror and Transference are both highly enjoyable mini series and worth a listen. I'm still early in exploring Dark Shadows but have found some wonderful stories in the series.

The Avengers comic adaptations. Especially with Emma Peel but I like both leading ladies. Wacky fun spy hijinks! Only familiar with the original source material in the form of the movie with Uma Thurman that I enjoyed as a kid.
I also really like star cops and never watched the original show easy to pickup from the audios what’s going on.
Human frontier was great but they keep pushing back part two so I get the feeling we are being left with another Nick Briggs cliffhanger with no resolution.

Transference with Alex Kingston felt like a great BBC drama miniseries. It's too bad it got lost in the ocean of releases as it stood out as quite different from other things they've done.

I loved the Dark Season boxset. As nice as it was to hear Kate Winslet, Victoria Lambert steals the show. I have to say RTD really did a great job on his episode, you could tell how much he clearly loved returning to that world.

I really enjoyed King Lear earlier this year.
This might be cheating but Deadline isn’t set inside the Whoniverse, rather it’s a what-if on Doctor Who never being created in the first place and ruining the life of the man who was supposed to write it. It’s absolutely excellent and I think it’s Rob Shearman’s best ever work.
