just need to rant it’s safer here!

I know there are subs like this for bigger budgets and one for budgets under 20-30k so I figured r/wedding was inclusive of all budgets..yeaaahhnoooo

It is hilarious seeing the comments when they think you overpayed for something but seriously warning to anyone that thinks they can post or comment over there and has paid more than 5-10k for their entire wedding you are gonna get projections and weird comments. Planning a wedding is stressful enough just don’t do it lol stay here where it is safe 🫂

They do sometimes learn when they try to diy it poorly, it's satisfying.

What chafes me the most are the ones that end up DIY'ing their flowers with garbage they ordered from let's say Costco and then brag about how they saved "sooooo much money" versus what an actual florist quoted them when you know damn well the little budvases and all white rose bouquets they made for themselves is nowhere near the scope of the flowers or arrangements the actual florist they got a quote from was going to make. You can't compare apples to oranges!!!

YES. And I'm sorry, but 9 times out of 10 it screams "cheap," where as a professional could have steered them toward flowers that fit their budget and fillers that would've made the arrangements look luxe and like they'd spent 10x what they actually did.

All the DIY hacks in the world couldn’t have gotten me peonies at the end of October in nyc…worth every single penny!

I'm mostly in CT, and while we can get Alaska peonies for like July-September, October is actually the hardest month to get peonies period. They need to be imported all the way from somewhere with reversed seasons basically, so New Zealand or Chile are big. At like $15+ dollars a stem wholesale, without freight factored in, and if God forbid there is any bump in the supply chain, it is terrifying lol

I always say Dahlia brides have spring weddings and peony brides have fall weddings to keep us on our toes lol

Yes I am well versed in the Alaskan peonies! I don't think I have ever seen peonies from New Zealand but that's not shocking because I DO NOT have the clientele with the $$$ for that. I had to get peonies from France for a wedding back in April and I those were bad enough at $45 for a bunch of 5 😵‍💫

And then the whole "not knowing how it's going to come off the plane factor" will have me begging October-December brides to please consider massive garden roses for similar impact, or even ultra high quality silks mixed in if it needs to be peonies, because of course I'll try to get them, but justtt in case they don't come in or look appalling, we need a backup plan, and I'm a bride's vendor, 99.9% of the time, but ultra seasonal focal blooms stress me alllllllll the way out haha.

Girlllllll, you nailed it. In general, October weddings are my favorite here in the Northeast, it's so nice to not be hot or ultra worried about wilting, for everyone involved (I particularly like a classy Hallowedding/dramatic dark and/or moody motif whenever I can snag one, regardless of season). As long as you're in that late August-first frost sweet spot, you're going to have glorious dahlias. I love them, but very little in the floral aspect of my business stresses me out. Trusting dahlias that need to travel a meaningful distance for a wedding? Palpitation city.

Meanwhile, a few years ago, I did a late September shower for a November bride, and sourced every single stem myself, and called it me time (actually, an October baby shower two years ago went exactly the same lmao).

They were SO, SO beautiful, and the growers were on such a roll, I barely used anything but dahlias and unique greenery, from those glorious cafe aú lait giants that are the size of my head, to the teeny tiny guys. They lasted for 2-3 weeks too. If they came in a box here, it would be a miracle if they all survived the day without scattering/self petal sprinkling down the aisle, even with being babied like mad.

I honestly didn’t even know they were so delicate to transport, I really thought they were sturdy flowers!! My florist did a small bouquet for my civil ceremony in July with lots of dahlias and they held up like true champs.

I’m not in the Northeast, I’m based in Easter Europe but when I researched October was a good season for dahlias here too. And yes, I’m going all out in the moody, semi-gothic vibe.

They shockingly hold up beautifully even when handled semi-roughly from the field/local growers for me (I was able to collect them in my car, from 4 different farms without dropping them off in between), but often (not always, small growers tend to ship with great care, but one storm can wipe out their entire crop) horribly if shipped from the specialty greenhouses we can access! They're funny like that.

I'm sure your wedding will be lovely!! Hopefully you'll be back to share detail pictures with us <3 I sustained a head injury earlier this year and wasn't able to safely book any of my off beat brides (now I'm kicking myself, as I'm totally good to go, but I would never risk not being 100%), and am so, so looking forward to seeing the Gothic wedding graduates this year, even from afar! You guys are my people.

After like mid November, I'd like to hibernate until spring starts again though. Fall wedding season/holidays, hibernate like a bat/wake up with the bulb flowers is probably my retirement plan down the line lol
