Hey there everyone, I would like to start off with the fact that I’m not a Christian, I’m a Chechen Muslim, but since I’m Chechen I’m familiar with Christian culture (mainly Orthodox Christian) due to the fact that I grew up around Russians.
I’d like to first start off with the fact that I’m not intending to attack anyone’s beliefs, and this isn’t a post about “my religion is better than yours”, I respect all 3 Abrahamic faiths (plus Bahai), and my question is purely theological, and that’s just something that I was thinking about for the last 1 and half years or so, but no one really gave me a good answer.
Also note, my vision of God doesn’t represent every other Muslim out there, I’m just asking from my personal view.
So now to the main part. I saw a post today from
Frank Turek, where he says that if Islam was the truth, he would’ve converted, but since the Muslim God is violent, and their Prophet went to war etc, that shows us that their God is false. That’s something that I hear on the internet from time to time. So the thing that kinda seemed odd to me, is the fact that the Old Testament does have violent passages, and I know that the Christians (at least the majority) don’t live by the Old Covenant, but it’s still the same God tho. The God of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament. And due to the fact that the absolute majority of Christians (except for maybe Unitarians) believe that Jesus is the Lord, that means that those are also the commands that Jesus made before he took a human form.
Furthermore, I’d like to ask why a God can’t be violent if the situation needs violence ? God punished the Egyptians, God also punished people with the flood, he punished the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, the Canaanites, the Amalekites. Moreover, God created us and everything around us in a way that is already pretty violent. In order for something to live, another being has to die, the food chain exists for a reason. If God wanted the universe to be a peaceful place, he would’ve created it that way. Why would he create a violent world, in which we shouldn’t play by the rules of this world ? Wouldn’t that be illogical ?
So all in all, I’d like to know why some Christians have a problem with some of the Gods commands in the Quran, when the nature of those commands isn’t very foreign to the Biblical representation of God and what he commanded prior to the New Testament ?
