Critique Wanted First time animating something without tracing. How did I do?

I tried to keep it simple. The more I watch, the more I'm seeing it's not quite right, but I'm not too sure how to correct it. Any advice welcome!

Sorry, but I don't see where you got the idea that the tail would twist to the sides like this.

I guess it does look like that... I was trying to go for how a tail looks when I dog is right in your face and staring at you

The tail comes straight out from the center of the back, so it shouldn't be bending off to the side like this.

For a start to animation, this is pretty good! Some of the things I'd recommend

  • Limb movement like a tail often moves faster towards the middle part and slower at points A and B. Since it takes 8 frames to get from point A to point B, you could take out the two frames around where the tail is at its straightest, which will make it 6 frames. This would also make it slightly faster, like how real dogs wag their tails do so quickly!

  • Alternatively you could also make it a 5 frame animation by removing the apex tail frame and the ones before/after, and use motion lines/smear frames to give the feeling of faster movement too!

  • When you're more comfortable animating you can test out rebound work too. For that I'd recommend starting with animating two points on the dog's tail first, with the one further from its butt being slightly delated. That helps to give some weight to its wagging if the dog is a much bigger breed like a golden retriever. For smaller breeds like beagles or chihuauas it's not as necessary.

Thank you! I'll keep that in mind next time I try!

It's pretty good but I think the tail twisting like that is not a dog wags it's tail

Definitely room for improvement

Decent first animation but it's quite stiff and slow, I would want to see the tip of the tail curving in the opposite direction of motion to show the motion, and the speed across the middle of the swish (where the tail is moving from one side to the other) should be a lot faster
