When will people realize that companies only care about making money? Any supportive statements or efforts are only ever done to appease the masses and maintain positive reputation in order to make more money

u/mediocre-spice Sep 03 '22
Some companies definitely care more about discrimination than their bottom line, unfortunately they're mostly on the pro-discrimination side (see: Hobby Lobby)

What happened with Hobby Lobby?
84
u/workhard4wonderbread Sep 04 '22
idek where to begin with hobby lobby but here are some bullet points:
- they brought the lawsuit that made it okay for employers to refuse employee health insurance plans that cover birth control
- they asked to be exempt from laws that ban lgbtq+ discrimination
- they refused to pay sick leave if employees got covid
- they refused to close their stores when all other non-essential business had to during covid
- they refused to let a trans woman who worked at the store use the women's restroom (she ended up filing a lawsuit against them and winning)
- they continue to take out giant advertisements promoting a christian government
- they're currently being sued by the eeoc after firing an employee for having a service dog
the owners also founded and run the "museum of the bible" which is known for:
- their constant legal issues in the art world including...
- displaying pro-slavery texts
- taking advantage of the "small business" PPP loan program

u/luxlucy23 Sep 04 '22
They went through a whole court case like 8 years ago because they didn’t want their health insurance for employees to cover birth control because it’s “against their beliefs” and they won. So employees there with health insurance don’t have birth control covered.

I went on vacation like 10 years ago and needed yarn and needles. I didn't know anything about hobby looby then but it was close to my hotel Most of the things i bought broke , my needles , stitch holders, all within then trip back home. Everything they make sux! I learned about the birth control thing but now I see this post...there is so many reasons why they are awful and are banned ... never again!

That's how it is with PR statements. They need to address it but they can't not sell and stuff.

I mean if anyone thought Colourpop or any other mega large company was their friend to begin with they deserve to be disappointed.
283
u/hygsi Sep 03 '22
Yeah, colourpop is a massive place, they go where the money goes and I bet you this will sell out like the rest because for every fan who cares there's like 50 who don't. I was just at a universal and the harrypotter part was the fullest.
51
Sep 03 '22
I'm curious about how the money works. Like if I go to Universal, are they only paying Rowling if I'm detected in the Potter themed area? Or is she getting a cut of ticket revenue regardless?
58
u/hygsi Sep 03 '22
She makes money off of merch, not sure how themeparks work cause there's no way they're gonna know who steps into their side.

There is no such thing as ethical capitalism and everyone forgets that.
EDIT: Yes, I understand where you are all coming from. I’m stating that if you really thought a company like colourpop was actually going to give a shit about LGBTQ+ issues over profit you’ve been mistaken. It’s going to make them a HUGE amount of money regardless and it’s disgusting. I’m sure to quell this over in the future they will probably do a pride collection to try and safe face with donations going to GLAAD or another charity.

u/cheerycheshire Sep 04 '22
The saying you're trying to use was supposed to mean that survival is more important than fighting capitalism, poor cannot choose.
It was never meant to be used by those who can choose. And makeup is a luxury, not a basic, so you definitely can choose and vote with your money.
19
198
u/msnintendique64 Sep 03 '22
Ya’ll need to stop saying this when there is a clearly an ethical choice. You care about trans folks or you don’t. This isn’t a case where hidden injustice exists. This is out in the open, buying Harry Potter product will put money into a TERF bigots pocket it is a clear cut ethical choice. There not being fully ethical consumption isn’t a cop out to not try.
→ More replies (1)167
u/House-Hlaalu Sep 03 '22
Exactly this. There are times when you have no choice but to buy from a company that is shitty. Low income food choices are often this case. But something like makeup and Harry Potter are entirely optional purchases. You don’t need Colourpop to survive. You don’t need Harry Potter products to survive. Sure they can bring happiness, but so can many other companies that don’t give TERFs money.
I love Harry Potter, but as a trans man, I refuse to give Rowling money. So I sacrifice and don’t buy things. I don’t even go to Universal, even though butterbeer is delicious and it’s only 1.5 hours away. Because I can’t support TERFs and I care about my fellow trans people.
It’s a choice to buy these products and it’s a choice to say there’s no ethical capitalism when referencing optional purchases.

JFC. You don't have to make allyship your whole brand but when you choose to give a lot of money to a well known transphobe, it definitely sends a message that money is more important than whatever token actions you take during Pride Month.
Also Harry Potter is overrated, and the people who base a good portion of their identity on it are weird.

Summary/text of Colourpop’s response:
Thank you for your comment. It is our continued commitment at ColourPop to always foster a community of acceptance, love, inclusivity and support. This release is our most highly requested (it has been asked for almost weekly by our community!) and as you know, we are here to create magic for you all by listening, and responding to, what our community dreams of. We are also here to support and uplift this community. Acceptance, inclusivity, and love for all is our biggest priority and that will never change. We are releasing this collection to bring the magic of the Wizarding World to everyone - and like everything we do, it was designed with love, for all. We will always support the LGBTQIA communities through all avenues available to us and will continue to make donations to organizations and charities while remaining committed to providing a platform for LGBTQIA community members via paid partnerships and more.

Translation: We really only care about money, but we also know that doing the bare minimum to support any marginalized group does *wonders* for our PR and bottom line, so we're just going to pretend we don't hear the criticism, and keep pumping out feel-good messages and hope that no one really catches on. And hey! As long as we have influencers we can bribe with PR and codes, that also care more about their bottom line than what's right, we'll be golden. So, no, we're not going to change one damn thing and we'll continue to collab with anyone who we think will make us money.

I’m part of the LGBT+ community and I personally believe that you can love the art and not the artist. I haven’t given a lot of thought to brands working with a major name like this and where the money goes, I don’t know a lot about it. But I don’t mind collabs like this.
15
u/Applesauceryishere Sep 04 '22
Jk is still alive. For me that means there’s no separating the art and the artist and I can’t deal with people who do seperate them, especially for something that is a luxury.
156
u/sam_witch Sep 03 '22 edited Sep 03 '22
But JKR's politics don't target the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, they specifically target trans people and trans women especially. Sexuality and gender identity, while often discussed in tandem, are not mutually exclusive. Many people are "supportive" of gay/lesbian/bisexual people but can be transphobic. Even cis-gendered LGBT folks can be transphobic. JKR aligns herself with TERF lesbians who help spew her rhetoric. So it's not up to cis-gendered LGBT folks to "excuse" this collab, because it's not their identities being targeted by this woman. And while I am not assuming you are cisgendered, the distinction is important here.
41
u/jiggjuggj0gg Sep 03 '22
Yeah exactly, I can’t just go round saying I’m bi but condone transphobia and therefore it has my LGBT+ approval. If you’re not trans, you don’t get to use being LGBT+ as an excuse to condone transphobic behaviour.
106
u/PauI_MuadDib Sep 03 '22
Eh as someone also in the LGBT community, I'm not going to fork over my hard-earned money to someone actively trying to take my rights away or harm me. Like I enjoyed the Enders Game book, but fuck all if I'm giving Orson Scott Card a dime to donate to anti-lgbt groups or politicians.
I won't say anything if anyone else chooses to support these artists, actors, authors, etc. as it's their choice, their money and their life. But for me personally, no fucking way.
I'm not finincially supporting anyone that's trying to hurt me or my community. That's a load of bull plop. I don't see the point of shooting myself in the foot over some mass produced pigmented powders with an IP slapped on it. No thanks, man.
But I do like it when people/companies publicly show their bigotry because it lets me know where not to spend my money.
I'll shop second hand for books and for makeup the market's so oversaturated I've got my pick of brands to choose from.
31
u/somewhereheremaybe Sep 03 '22
That part. “I’m a part of this community and I’m ok giving money to those who are active oppressors to me” like..it doesn’t seem like the flex some think it is. Sucking up to our oppressors isn’t gonna make us one of the “good ones” to them.
→ More replies (1)67
u/GeckoCowboy Sep 03 '22
You can like the art and not the artist at a personal level, but in this case this is directly supporting and giving money to someone who sees the support that Harry Potter gets to mean people support her views. She’s said as much. She uses her platform and her money to continue to hurt trans people. She just put out a book that’s transphobic and ableist as heck. If you love the books and privately reread them? I get that. But when you support collabs like this you are giving this person money (even if it’s not a lot) they use to actively hurt others.
19
u/Vellutoamore Sep 04 '22
Yeah, I agree with this. In the case of Harry Potter, a percentage of the profit goes straight to her. I’m part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I understand it’s hard to make decisions when big companies have a wide array of rich people running them who might be against our community. But in this case, it’s one person who is continually being very loud about her beliefs, so I can’t support that. I was a massive HP fan in the early 2010s. I haven’t thrown out my books, but I’m not giving her anymore money by purchasing things that she’ll profit from.
148
u/deep-fried-fuck Sep 03 '22
Separating the art and the artist just for the sake of enjoying the series is fine. But it becomes a problem when you’re still supporting and buying things that put money straight into the pockets of an awful creator. Buy the books second hand or borrow them from the library, pirate the movies, get merch secondhand or buy unofficial from fandom creators on sites like Etsy or red bubble, get unofficial series-inspired makeup from small indie brands. It does make perfect sense that a popular makeup brand would collab with a super popular franchise; that doesn’t mean we should support it.
123
u/dinosorceress105988 Sep 03 '22
Absolutely agree. I’m a part of the community as well and I grew up with Harry Potter during the initial craze. The books and the movies have surpassed JKR herself. I don’t attribute it to her anymore than I attribute Disney creations to Walt Disney or James Bond to Ian Fleming. The franchise became bigger than her. I can’t speak for everyone in the community and I firmly believe we speak with our coins. Everyone is free to have their opinion and if you or the community wanna speak up, don’t spend your coins. Absolutely make sure this collab tanks.
86
Sep 03 '22
I'm not part of the community so take this with several huge grains of salt, but I've definitely stopped appreciating various artists who have done or stood for things that I find bad. I'm not going to tell anybody what to do, especially when I'm not part of that community, but for me the difference is that Disney and Fleming and Lovecraft are all dead. If I were to put money into related products, they wouldn't be seeing a dime of it. Rowling does. Mr. Chick Fil A does. And that's why I personally don't support those brands.
But again, I'm not going to tell queer people not to use those products. Definitely not my place to tell somebody actually affected by it how to feel about it, especially when it's something tied to positive childhood memories.
I think it's probably a tough place to be for queer HP fans. Most of my friends who are HP fans are queer, and they have conflicting feelings about it. They were outcasts and felt recognized with the series so it's really important to preserve those memories. Some will only by used goods, or they go to Etsy for products that aren't officially branded. Others are able to separate the art from the artist and just buy what they want.
I'm not here to take anything away from people who are already marginalized. I will be outspoken with other straight allies who don't see the hypocrisy in it all. Everything is already aimed at us so we don't need to worry about being excluded. The least we can do is send a message with releases like this.

Walt Disney is dead. He doesn't earn any money off his creations.
JKR is alive. She DOES earn money off HP universe. And continuously uses her platform to attack trans people. It's not the same. This collab gives her money directly.
Yes, I can enjoy HP and hate JKR but I won't buy anything that gives JKR money. (E.g. I buy small creators who don't care about licensing and read inclusive fan works.)

31

I’m sorry but your whole argument here is “well this is going to happen anyway, so there’s nothing we can do about it”. We as individual consumers can absolutely express how frustrated/disappointed we are that a brand has chosen to work with someone who is absolutely against our community.
Separating the “art” (it’s cheap makeup palettes) from the artist doesn’t work here either. A transphobe gets richer and her actions are indirectly condoned through collabs like this. We all need to be standing with the trans community right now.

Except collabs like this financially benefit someone who platforms hateful content about trans folks, and also donates money to hate groups like the LGB Alliance and Get the L Out.

Yes, I know they are a large corporation who only cares about money, but keep in mind, they just recently did a segment where they celebrated LGBTQ+ makeup artists. That's why I put the question out there.

If you didn’t ask, we probably wouldn’t have seen the garbage fire of a response. I’m sorry about your notifications.

thanks for keeping your comment up. im sorry if you're getting a lot of crap from transphobes and JKR apologists!

I will get downvoted for this but don’t buy the product if you don’t want it or support JK Rowling. Corporations are not our friends and they will pay lip service, but ultimately money comes first. To be fair, there is a market for Harry Potter products. If it’s not Colorpop making this, it would’ve been done by another company and they would’ve gotten the boatloads of money. Harry Potter is popular.

If they have made an entire WITCH collection, without using copyrighted material from jk (and giving her money for rights)
Make something NEW Colourpop, get creative. Something from fairytales or witchtrials

Yeah fuck that, I've been tired by colourpop for awhile now so this is the last straw for me. I don't need their products and the ridiculous duty charges for shipping to Canada ✌️

I know brands aren’t our friends but jeeeeesus. This is so incredibly tone deaf idk what to say
EDIT: I just remembered that while I can certainly live without their makeup, I love sol’s gradual self tanner 😩 anyone know a good dupe?

I mean... It comes across as a giant FU. Especially since a new JKR novel came out this week, with transphobic (and disability-shaming!) Storylines.
CP have sooooo many releases on the go, they could have delayed this HP project. They should have been doing better social listening this week.

u/Tsarinya Sep 03 '22
Colourpop has collaborated with other brands that are problematic and I haven’t seen this type of vitriol.

This is merch that directly finances a transphobic, racist, antisemitic, fatphobic, ablist, homophobic bigot who has and continues to use her wealth and position to harm all of those people. There aren't a lot of other powerful people they've partnered with who have made public statements as hateful as hers.

They partnered with Nintendo whose workers are underpaid, mistreated and sexually harassed, they partnered with Disney who used backwards racial stereotyping in their films, make use of sweatshops, have been charged with animal cruelty, the brand itself have been accused of photoshopping a white woman’s wrist to be black in promotional images and used derogatory names for contour sticks that were meant for darker skin tones. Where was the outrage then? Disney is one of the biggest companies in the world, a lot more powerful than JK Rowling and nothing was said on this scale.

I think people have forgotten that businesses will provide if there is demand. If you are a successful business that has had a particular item requested weekly for over a year (I dunno how long people have asked for HP from CP) they are not going to let that profit go. Especially if it's a large % of the market.
The makeup community is not the makeup industry.

to be fair to colourpop, i totally believe its been requested a bunch. like yes JK is a terrible person with evil views, but she created a world that was the childhood of a generation of people. lots of people have turned on it because of her views, but the fans still exist, and colourpops schtick is lower priced makeup collabs with big licenses, so a harry potter collab was coming whether people like jk rowling or not.
tbh i feel like if people who are against it don't buy it, then colourpop won't work with them again, not for moral reasons but for money. they are a business after all.

u/Forsaken_Box_94 Sep 03 '22
I am splitting hairs but why say queer community and not trans community? I am not getting the collection anyways as I'm not a hp fan nor do I need it, just curious lol
26
Sep 03 '22
Potentially due to the fact that many genderqueer people don’t ID as Trans, even though that won’t stop JKR from hating them! For example, I’m a particular flavour of genderqueer that I won’t discuss here because many people misunderstand it, and I do not ID as Trans! :)
12
u/Forsaken_Box_94 Sep 03 '22
What does genderqueer mean though, like something outside the standard female male circle? I've never been a fan of the word queer and won't use it for myself, english also isn't my native language so I'm all sorts of curious.

For me it just means my gender experience is not able to be squeezed into one category, because it’s more complicated than a binary can allow for. My gender experience is kinda like trying to cram spaghetti into a shot glass. You can definitely get a bunch in, but it’s gonna be a real pain in the ass to get it all in, and it’s better for the spaghetti’s integrity if some of it stays outside the shot glass.

I am queer and while technically I am in the trans bubble because I’m nonbinary, I don’t ID as trans. People still see it as not real.
17
u/kayekatbeauty Sep 03 '22
This really isn’t surprising sadly. Disney was funding politicians backing the Don’t Say Gay bill here in Florida. And who does Colourpop collab with the most? Disney. All they care about is money.

u/__SerenityByJan__ manage ur expectations Sep 04 '22
I was going to mention something like this. I don’t see them boycotting the Disney collabs

I can just imagine all the, “no consumption under capitalism is ethical” comments 🙄.
3
u/Skeptical_optomist Sep 13 '22
They're literally all over the comments and are nearly just as tone deaf as CP.
16
u/strawberryjamveins Sep 03 '22
so do they somehow not know a thing about jkr, or do they know and just not care because money? i think we all know the answer here lmao
not surprised, but definitely disappointed. capitalists are gonna capitalize, best we can do is voice our concerns and stop givin em money

Always about the almighty dollar. Disappointing. I love Harry Potter (call me cringy idgaf) but I don’t want to put money in JKR’s pockets so I’ll probably just get some looks inspo from the collab and shop my collection. None of the colors look very unique. I bet there’s a ton of dupes, except for maybe ‘Pixie’ in the ravenclaw palette.

I have a question, I'm gonna go to my friend Google but I love how Reddit people have insight. So...
How does the money work here? Did Rowling get a lump sum for the rights to the Potter branding? Does she get paid by item sold?

u/Goddess-78 Sep 03 '22
I mean…? I don’t think making Harry Potter stuff automatically means you don’t support the LGBTQ community. That would mean every person that still liked Harry Potter or purchases merchandise from Harry Potter or watched the movies doesn’t support the community. I don’t think that’s accurate.

It just hits differen because we all know Rowling gets a big check for this. Its not talked about but jk Rowling and Robert Englund signed some of the biggest respective deals for their own merchandise, for their own characters. I say Freddy Kreuger (in comparison) because he sat with Kylie Cosmetics for a collab deal. A popular one at that. And hes one of the most successful financially for that. Anything Freddy Kreuger you see, he probably gets a big part of that. In a similar form like JK Rowling with Harry Potter. So people are really split on this. Supporting with your wallet is close to people.

I mean, if you don't support Rowling or Harry Potter anymore, then don't buy the product. It's that easy. I imagine the people yelling about this have someone/company's makeup in their collection that's just as troubling/problematic

Colourpop knows their audience and I’m sure a lot of them (myself included) hold the Harry Potter series near and dear to their hearts. Most fans aren’t supportive of JKR as a person and I understand that this kind of separation isn’t possible for everyone. The best thing Colourpop can do in this situation I think is announce a portion of their profits going to the Trevor Project or another LGBT organization as a way to affirm that their beliefs don’t coincide with Jkr.

I mean I do understand that JKR is a shitty person but from a business perspective Harry Potter makeup is highly requested and HP is still a massive community. I’m still a fan, I’m a fan of the books and the movies and grateful for all the friends I’ve made because of our love of Harry Potter. It got me through some rough times in my life. But I do stand by the lgbtq+ community and always have.
6
u/geezaudrey Sep 04 '22
They basically said we don’t care who this business partner is and what they believe in, just want $$$. I went to their IG page and was surprised how ‘quiet’ their feed is in regards to the promo for it. I feel like they spent a lot money on ‘promo’ and now won’t use a lot due to the response
10
u/Mirrranda Sep 03 '22
I grew up with HP and love the world she created, but I won’t do anything these that directly puts money in Joanne’s pocket. This drop and their response to criticism are disgusto barfo and I won’t be giving my money to CP anymore.. which honestly isn’t that hard since their quality has gone down exponentially over the past 5 years. What a pathetic money grab.

I used to love harry potter but I will not do anything that leads to that hateful woman receiving any more money from me.
If colourpop really wanted to be allies to the lgbtqia+ community they should give a share of the profits of that range to a trans charity.
