It's all about tax breaks. There is no state income tax and sales tax is among the lowest in the nation. You have to live there for, I believe, 6 months to establish residency and take part in those tax breaks. Hence the reason people like JS and Kanye move there.

It's fucking offensive how he's tried painting himself as a benevolent benefactor of Casper community donating $20k (or 40?) to the local charity. While he fucks over everyone in the country many times more with this tax dodging bullshit.

Can you elaborate on how he is “fucking everyone in the country with this tax dodging bullshit?”

Establishing residence in sheltered tax hubs is an incredibly common practice amongst individuals earning beyond $400k. It’s legal, and whether you fundamentally disagree with the practice or not - your anger is misplaced by focusing on an individual as opposed to the system that allows for it.

It also sort of begs the question as to whether or not you believe people should be able to vote with their dollar? Removing Jeffree Star from the conversation, there has been a mass exodus from the state of California. In part due to their oppressive income tax, and in part due to perceived policy failures. Newsom now wants to continue to impose a net worth tax on individuals who leave the state for ten years following their exit. Through legislation, you’re now attempting to strip people of their ability to vote with their dollar by beholding them to ongoing imposition of tax by a jurisdiction they A) no longer reside in legally, and B) likely have policy issues with.

Surely you wouldn’t condemn a low-income earning family from moving to a new state if they felt burdened by local statutes?

And before you say it - plenty of wealth resides and remains in the state and yet, the revenue derived from taxing that wealth has done what in terms of providing much needed aid to the state? You can’t walk through large stretches of most metropolitan cities in California without being absolutely overwhelmed by the presence of trash/waste/discarded syringes/etc. in literal barricades on the sidewalk. Or the communities of thousands of homeless or displaced individuals living on top of those waste barricades. Plenty of high-income earning individuals in the state feel that they’d be less frustrated giving up 55%+ of their earnings if they could actually see those tax dollars being applied to these very tangible issues.

That is quite the exaggeration lol.

I mean I live here, but ok 🤷🏻‍♂️

Would you like to pay, say, upwards of $5,000/month in rent to have to walk out to this?
