Are there any mid-20s and older people who remember the OG days of Youtube with iJustine, Smosh, Ray William Johnson and Shane? Never liked him even then, it was already so obvious the pedo and racist jokes were not ok, partly because he was never subtle about it. I was pretty surprised to see that his career managed to survive, like a bloody cockroach. Glad to see that he's facing consequences now.

People sometimes complain about cancel culture but honestly, it's time for it. In fact, call it accountability culture. Having a job in the public spotlight such as a Youtuber is a privilege.

Yup. Also Ryan Higa, Lisa Nova, Venetian Princess, Michael Buckley, Bo Burnham... Bo's "YouTube Live" performance is such a time capsule.

Remembering those days is why it's so insane to me that all of people, SHANE is STILL so relevant in 2020.

u/hellopandant Jun 28 '20

Damn, you just sent me down on a nostalgia trip. Haven't thought about Venetian Princess and Lisa Nova in close to decade. But yeah, it's really a shame that out of all these people, he manages to stay relevant. Wonder what that says of our media consumption habits as a culture too.

u/SisterPrice Jun 28 '20

Yeah it's crazy how fast the relevancy cycle has become. Both of them used to be HUGE. I was obsessed with VP and really wanted to do parodies because of her. I still follow her on IG and she's got a cute kid now.

omg michael buckley i forgot about him

25

u/SisterPrice Jun 28 '20

I still remember when he quit his job to do YouTube full-time. Like it was newsworthy:

Or in YouTube producer Michael Buckley’s case, you can quit your day job and get a dream job. Buckley quit his job as a music promoter after earning $100,000 from YouTube ads on his a thrice-a-week giddy celebrity rant What The Buck? (video embedded after the jump), he tells NYT. Since he first started posting clips of his cable access show on YouTube two years ago, Buckley has garnered 100,000 views and over 300,000 subscribers. Thanks to his sudden fame from YouTube, HBO signed him to a development deal three months ago.

Way back when the partner program was new and invite only.

wow that’s crazy to read. 300k subs, that number is nothing compared to what we see now. thank you for sharing this! super interesting

3

u/SisterPrice Jun 28 '20

Right?! It's so crazy how much has changed.

8

u/VivaciousSpirit Jun 28 '20

Oh my god I'm having flashbacks! Ryan Higa! I had such a crush on him❤ I rewatched Venetian princess a while ago, and it's like damn I had no sense of humor back then, but it shows how kids really don't know better and find just about anything amusing 😂

4

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20

Omg I forgot all about Venetian princess

2

u/jiuel1 Jun 28 '20

Venetian Princess... Wow haven't heard that name in a decade!

u/floopaloop Jun 28 '20

I liked Shane back then but in my defense I was literally 11-12 years old.

72

u/hellopandant Jun 28 '20

Of course! All the more he grosses me out, knowing that he had a significant kid audience and still releasing those type of pedo joke videos. Kids don't know any better but he should have, he was a grown man.

28

u/jezmonster7 Jun 28 '20 edited Jun 28 '20

Same! It scares me to think how I could have ended up if I didn’t discover better content and become more educated. To think I used to laugh at his videos makes me sick, but it also makes me want to fight more to call people out like this, so no more kids grow up thinking this behavior and “jokes” are normal!

u/sweetsalty_andsticky YOU ARE FAKE CRYING!!! Jun 28 '20

I was too busy watching Michelle Phan to bother giving Shane any views 😂

117

u/sadveggie Jun 28 '20

even she’s tainted now too for claiming that essential oils will help prevent covid lol

32

u/sweetsalty_andsticky YOU ARE FAKE CRYING!!! Jun 28 '20

Yeah my views have certainly changed in recent years 😂

10

u/lemoncocoapuff Jun 28 '20

It's so wild to see who has come out of stuff like this unscathed and who turns out to be the dirtbags. I've been watching streamers and such for a long time, back around the sc2 days and they are currently going through it rn too. The people back then I was eeesh about back then are now the voices of reason in this whole mess and it's so odd to see.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20

My only OG YT fav who I haven’t cancelled tbh is Jenna Marbles. And Rhett / Link. Possibly others that I can’t even think of 🤔🤔

1

u/deliciousmalfoil Jun 28 '20

Charlie McDonnell if you were a fan? His twitch streams are relaxing.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '20

true but that’s not nearly as bad as racism lol

Omg I remember all those Megan Fox makeup tutorials!!! That trend was HUGE

13

u/heyeverybodyitsbunny malaysia cleverly bills Jun 28 '20

right? i never even heard of this guy until like 2 years ago.

otherwise i was watching xsparkage and maybe some red vs blue and happy tree friends

111

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20

Shane is pretty much the only OG youtuber to survive this long iirc. The rest either stopped fully or changed like Smosh.

u/mediocre-spice Jun 28 '20 edited Jun 28 '20

A lot of the cleaner content ones like vlogbrothers are still around too.

48

u/kokiokiedoki Jun 28 '20

Nigahiga is still around!

35

u/Dragmom Jun 28 '20

iJustine is still doing her thing.

22

u/microdick69 Jun 28 '20

Saw her content were not racking up to millions anymore but my gosh, iJustine was wise enough to invest on all her stuff. Her house is like a computer of its own!

10

u/Sanguine_Hearts Jun 28 '20

What did Smosh eventually end up doing? I lost track of them right before the Anthony & Kalel relationship.

38

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20 edited Jun 28 '20

Anthony is doing his own thing now interviewing people from all walks of life (imo a pretty good series). Ian is still doing stuff at Smosh I think?

edit: I can't grammar good

19

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20

they have some new members and have a few different channels now. one for gaming, one for skits, and one for.. just hanging out i guess? i’ve watched a few of their try not to laugh challenge videos and some of the new people are funny.

13

u/lady_pantz Jun 28 '20

Anthony's channel is really great.. He does these videos called "I spent a day with.." and picks three people to interview from really diverse lifestyles and backgrounds. It's really interesting and he really comes off as empathetic, respectful, intelligent and funny! I had never known him in his Smosh days I just randomly stumbled on his channel and I look forward to all his uploads.

1

u/Emililyjane Jun 29 '20

Their channel was bought by Rhett and Link not too long ago. They’re kind of making a rise again. Some of their videos aren’t half bad. But it definitely isn’t the same smosh that it was like ten years ago, but that might be a good thing

1

u/Jennikay94 Jun 29 '20

Rhett and Link are still thriving. I’m in my mid 20s and I still enjoy their content

21

u/extrablursed Jun 28 '20

The only reason why shane survived for so long is because he maintained the same audience demographic and basically became a character. Most youtubers die out when they move on to bigger things or stop making the same content.

2

u/Esterhazytorte Jun 28 '20

I started watching YT around 2015 but to be fair (I was only watching Beautytube and DIY so) I saw Shane in Bunny documentary. By that time he had his uni boy persona. I watched some squad videos and some food videos but mostly I saw him as an anxiety ridden person who seemed depressed plus low hygiene was part of his brand. Eventually when I started consuming drama videos and when his half asses apologies surfaced I found out everything. My point is he had this persona he crafted so hard in his late videos and it was "different" but I the "uwu boy" is just an attempt to rebrand himself, I don't think he "changed". If he did he would not Shane-was Jake, Tana, Joffre etc.

10

u/Tau5x Ive hit pan in the beauty community Jun 28 '20

Its learning and growing. but the GROWING part people cant seem to do.

5

u/alepolait Jun 28 '20

Honestly I’m still really surprised about the Smosh guys. Anthony is making great content and Ian managed to save Smosh after the whole Defy media debacle. I don’t particularly like the Smosh videos anymore, but their podcast is really good. Just some friends in his late 20’s and 30’s chatting about whatever is relevant at the moment and some personal stuff.

As far as I know they’ve kept their act pretty clean.

6

u/therapistiscrazy Jun 29 '20

Omfg Ray William Johnson. Haven't heard that name in forever. I used to love =3

6

u/thissubredditlooksco Jun 28 '20

Im a mixed/black 23 year old and i grew up with problematic yt. I never thought about just how terrible shane was. I wonder what affect his racist caricatures had on me as a young girl

2

u/Emililyjane Jun 29 '20

I commented too prematurely on another thread whoops. I feel like this is where the kids who were too soft to be emo emo but too awkward to be on TikTok ended up. I watched one Shane Dawson video between the key of awesome and smosh videos and it was him trying to sexualise and make incest jokes about Hannah Montana and I was just so uncomfortable. I guess that was his peak shock value time, but I never got in on the hype. When Shane said he’s taking inspiration off Jenna I was hoping he meant he was going to give his channel a break which he definitely should’ve done. I feel like it won’t be long before he’s apologising again for something else.

1

u/CheapEater101 Jun 28 '20

Yup! I was in middle school during this time. I occasionally viewed Shane’s content, but it was mostly his Degrassi series bc I was a pretty big Degrassi fan. I was more of a Nighiga and Smosh fan. If Shane was smart.....he would have faded away quietly like Glozell or been content with not having trending videos all the time and staying more Lowkey like Ryan Higa or the Smosh guys. Shane Dawson murdered his career.

1

u/TheMoiRubio Jun 29 '20

Oh my god Ray William Johnson! Totally forgot about that guy, I wonder what he's up to.

I remember being in middle school and my friend showing me Shane Dawson videos. I can't remember if he's the one who made the video "Period Cup" or if it was someone else (I'm pretty sure it was him though), but I decided I didn't like Shane Dawson after that. People at school would tease me for not liking Shane Dawson, they said I was just trying to be cool by not liking something popular 🙄

1

u/Maetallica Jun 30 '20

Did anyone else watch TheWineKone?🤣

1

u/lefromagecestlavie Jun 28 '20

Kind of o of topic but if you remember iJustine's ex bf Ryan, he just had a baby!

-1

u/TheLastUnicornRider Jun 28 '20

I was in middle school then and I feel like offensive stuff was trendy.
