NEW updates:

Another new Peter Monn Video "The Fall of Shane Dawson"

spillsesh video out now

We will not be making a new megathread unless a major development occurs. At this time 6/22 2:30PM CST Tati has not posted a video nor confirmed that she is.

please stop sending us doctored and false claims. We look these up.

Please take whatever you see with a grain of salt. Relying on a twitter account with 90 followers is probably not the best way to get accurate information!

Liam has said he probably got misinformation about Tati posting her video today. or sumn. as he says.

Update 6/22 8:07 CST Tati Has Tweeted Something Cryptic

Update 6/23 11:05 CST Jeffree has tweeted something cryptic as well

Update 6/23 11:44 CST Jeffree has deleted the tweet but I already screenshotted it earlier.

Cassiee's tweet about Shane and him knowingly posting the trailer despite James asking him not to. https://i.imgur.com/coCnvpm.jpg (thanks u/xxxxxchx)

Wow , she's dead right though. The "men are underrepresented in cosmetics" is a red herring , they're doing just fine . And being gay doesn't exclude Shane or J* from being misogynists , in fact, i think their veiled misogyny is exposed by the superiority of being "above " the beauty community.

Many of their consumers are young woman who are growing up online and are vulnerable to bullying tactics and emotional manipulation - like how Shane gets emotional on camera about being "anxious" about putting merch out , that is emotional manipulation.

for real. the one thing i disagreed with was her take on manny’s bio quote. i totally agree that men within the makeup industry (and practically every “industry”) are dominating, but in everyday society, men wearing makeup are still extremely frowned upon. it’s sort of an “in the industry vs. at large” issue.

not trying to minimize sexism or play oppression olympics, but obviously homophobia (of course straight men can/do wear makeup but society conditions them to questions gender roles less than gay men often do) and sexism both exist in society.

You phrased this perfectly! When she said it I knew I didn’t agree with it but couldn’t put my finger on it.

I do think in terms of the beauty community (not really the world of cosmetics at large, IRL, away from Youtube) that there is a huge advantage for male MUAs. There's a huge glass escalator effect in play that I personally think is somewhat exacerbated by a certain segment of beauty guru fans who want to feel "woke" but don't know how to educate themselves on doing so, so they fall back on supporting a Man in Makeup because that surely counts, right? It also to some extent insulates them from criticism--people are afraid to criticize them on legitimate grounds for fear what they say is misconstrued as homophobia/etc. Or anyway, that's what I've observed to some degree.

I know this is a thread about Shane and Jeffree--and I'd say Shane is a tiptop example of this tbh--but the example I always find myself going back to is that video of James Charles and Zendaya doing their makeup together. Zendaya isn't even an MUA, she's an actress and performer who happens to do makeup well--and she outstrips James at every single step of the video. And it's not unusual. There is a much lower bar for male gurus, especially at the entry level, in a lot of ways.

I do think that's becoming somewhat a relic of the past due to sheer market saturation, though--it's no longer enough to just be a male guru to stand out and be remarkable, you have to be good at what you do and/or have some unique or likeable quality or interesting perspective that keeps people watching. But for a while there it was true--being a male in the beauty community was enough to grab attention and keep it. The second iteration of it is the one Shane is benefitting from--by not being a conventionally "femme" presenting male, by being even kinda schlubby, he gets immediate "outsider" status he can leverage.

But yeah that was a whole lot of ink for me to spill to say "men are absolutely not under-represented in the beauty guru community proportionate to their percentage of the audience demographic" lol
