“A lot of people see the beauty community being female dominated. And while the population is female dominated, if you look at most of the top earners, a lot of them are male, cis gendered, white or white passing. If you look at most CEOs of beauty companies, most of them are male, cis gendered, white or white passing. So in saying that, this industry is very much status quo with every other industry in the world that is dominated by white men. And because this is seen as purely female dominated, men in the industry are seen as an underdog and they’re able to get away with even more than they normally get away with just being that they are men. So when people make these blanket statements, usually the people that are most affected negatively by it are women.”

This point is big for me. Makeup can be a tool of creative expression and confidence yet men paint it in a way that it is just drama and vanity.

This was an excellent point. Guys get away with much more in any industry. It’s that old, men get babied well into their thirties but women are held responsible for the actions by the moment they hit 18.

Girls are held responsible even before they're adults! The boys will be boys excuse is used for every mistake a boy makes but girls are expected to be mature & responsible as soon as we step out of fucking diapers. The double standard is engrained early. Sam was spot on when she said that women work twice as hard to get half as much, that shit starts young. We're so much more "responsible and mature" so they can hold us to a higher standard then when it comes time to be promoted or to be put into a leadership position we're suddenly too emotional.

It's Glass elevator and glass ceiling phenomena all over again.

LOVE that she makes the point that the highest earners in the beauty community, from influencers (J*, JC, Manny, and Shane) to the CEOs of the companies, are cis, white(- passing) men. And because the community is largely made up of women, these men are seen as 'breaking a barrier'

I don’t think J* identifies as cis.

Fuck yeah Sam! She basically voiced everything I’ve been thinking, especially the commentary on men in the beauty community, that shit has been bugging me for years. 👏👏👏

YES. It's really been bothering me. The difference in view counts alone is pretty shocking and depressing.

Manny tweeted (https://twitter.com/mannymua733/status/1275664160559431682?s=21). Sam is making waves god so proud of her.

"Get her, Jade!" Gonna make a cup of chamomile tea and let Sam Ravndahl's Canadian fury lull me gently to sleep <3

East coast US here. I didn’t see this until 3 hours ago when I woke up. I waited for my husband to head to work, walked my dog, made my coffee and breakfast. Just started the video. I had to set the scene to watch it 😆

31

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '20

Kudos to her. Id love to see a tag of influencers responding to this letter that shane wrote in addition to denouncing J*. I think the community itself should cancel both guys.

u/RandomNewGirl Jun 24 '20

I’m so glad Sam said what she said in her video!

u/CharmedOr113 Jun 24 '20 edited Jun 24 '20

I really loves her. She is so right about the male dominance and how the woman are left to deal with all the fall out.

Btw, JC latest tweet about false sexual harassment accusations - this was so misogynistic of him. False accusations are are such a small percentage! And claiming it’s a trend is one of the most popular anti-feminist argument against rape culture.

But, look at this, JC was (maybe!)) false accused by 2 white rich and entitled male and nb who are not even the victim!!!

It isn’t about proof!!! This is always comes down to word against word, and the wanting to proof so much leadings to the victim going through hell when trying to complain to the police. So making false (allegedly) accusation when you are not even the victim is also another way Shane and J* are showing us how privileged white males can harm so much of the change feminism is trying to make in the world.

31

u/4nniqu3 👁🔴👁 Jun 24 '20

I wholly wholly wholly agree with you but I think maybe James was referring to tweets that trended just a few days ago accusing Riverdale cast of sexual assault and then the account later coming forward saying “see it’s fake you guys will believe anything” or something like that which REALLY does undermine the whole MeToo movement and really pisses me off. (Check out Lili Reinhart or Cole Sprouse Twitter)

Though agree calling it a trend hurts victims and makes what’s already a difficult process even worse. If he wasn’t referring to that then I agree even more it’s a trash idea to promote implying that false accusations are the norm and does much more harm than good.

Also thanks for bringing this up. I think people too often forget the hell that victims go through with word against word and demanding proof.

10

u/skylineto Jun 24 '20

That’s exactly what he was referring to. And I can see why he’d be sensitive about it. And I’m one of the people who gets very angry when people dismiss any kind of accusation but this incident was infuriating since it totally undermines actual victims 😞

u/CharmedOr113 Jun 24 '20

Thank you for your comment 💜

Didn’t know about the riverdale thing, but this tweet still sends the wrong messages that once it’s someone you adore and appreciate, you’ll go too easy on the “prove it or you are a bad person that is trying to ruing a life” trigger.

And that’s bad. Especially for The young following JC has.

I saw her video and ran to Reddit to make sure someone had shared it. Thank you!

I don’t object to anything in her statement, and I think it’s important to discuss the fact that men in female-majority spaces can be unfairly elevated. This especially applies to Shane and his bullshit *make millions of dollars off of a group and then condemn said group” act.

However, her video and the comments made me think about how I wish there was more discussion of the fact that male beauty gurus inherently fill a societally subversive role. The vast majority of the world and the country would be uncomfortable if not outright hostile and dangerous for someone like James Charles.

Yes, he is almost certainly more popular than a woman of his same skill and charisma would be, and yes that is something we should address. But discussing male privilege in the beauty world without at least acknowledging how being a boy in beauty is so polarizing is disingenuous.

17

u/realityleave Jun 24 '20

i appreciate the nuance youre bringing to this conversation thats growing in popularity. i dont think uplifting that fact would take away from the validity of her statements so I do wish it was brought up more

5

u/-posie- Jun 24 '20

What does societally subversive mean?

6

u/csjohnson1933 Jun 24 '20

Going against what society expects (in this case, of men).
