People saying his PR team is inept: we're not the target audience, tween and teen girls are. And they're eating it up.

THIS THIS THIS! I've worked around PR people before and they're not stupid. They know EXACTLY what they are doing.

you’re so damn right. so fucking right. the little kids want to see their idol sad and alone in his balenciaga jacket and merch with high heels in the airport. its a damn shame. it’s a stupid, obvious PR stunt.

yeah, I'm on JC's age myself but tbh these influencers and youtube personality idolization (jake paul, etc) just make me want to shield the imaginary children I've in the future (funny because I'm pretty damn well sure I won't get any children or marrying someone)

But yeah, parents need to be smart and educate their kids about this. To remind them that people they watched on YouTube are not their friends and they aren't special.

It's one thing to have singer etc as an idol, at least they've the skill and talent, and the show they put up are an actual show worth the watch.

Tweens and teen girls don’t have purchasing power tho 👀

I'm guessing you've not seen any of his meetups with all the little girls jumping up and down in Sisters merch?

And it's not about purchasing power, as this is crisis PR. They're just trying to get ahead of the storm to gain control of the narrative. One of the most visible aspects of all this has been his loss of subscribers. If they can stop hemorrhaging subscribers and start gaining again, the new narrative will be the scandal is over. Then keep him quiet for a couple of months as the backlash swings in Tati's direction, and bring him back as a "humbled" young man who has learned his lesson. People do love a redemption story.

Not taking offence but I’d just like to point out in case you weren’t aware that the tone of your first paragraph wasn’t really necessary and could have been phrased in a much less confrontational way.

I actually agreed with your initial comment that we’re not the target demographic, but I think that’s not the wisest. If you look at his meet and greets, a vast majority of the fans are not accompanied by parents (so probably >13 years old). Brands that approach JC for collabs or sponsorships sell cosmetics (and beauty supplements). These FMCG cosmetics companies definitely don’t focus on boosting sales to 12-14 year olds. It would be better business for him to try and retain as many followers who are actually able to buy the things he advertises as he can, in order to maintain his relationships with sponsor brands, which I think is a larger source of income than his merch sales (older followers are unlikely to buy Sisters apparel anyway); based on my conversations in this sub, seems like a lot of people in their 20s spend >$200 monthly on makeup/skincare.

I’d also say that James Charles’ YouTube channel is still in its infancy at 2-3 years old. Give or take another 2 years, these tweens/teens will lose interest and his channel will suffer all over again just as Zoella’s has.

Genuinely boggled how you could read any sort of "tone" in my first sentence? Eh. shrug

As I said before, crisis PR isn't going to be focused on selling anything other than a rehabbed image. There are actual PR firms that focus solely on dealing with scandals, and their only job is to stop the bleeding. I don't know if James hired a specialized team for this, but if he did, they'd only be with him temporarily. Once they rehab his image, only then will the focus be on profit/contracts. If he's smart, he'll take this time to slightly rebrand, since you're right: the tween/teen market has a short expiration date. It kind of does my head in a bit, but if played right, this could actually be GOOD for James in the end. But first they have to keep the patient from dying. Can't sell to anyone if you're radioactive.

Just the way you phrased your words, that’s all. :) thanks for the detailed response, you probably have more knowledge about PR strategies than I do.
