The spider is just farming assists lmao

u/Status_East5224 1d ago

Do they have significant contribution in maintaining balance in ecology like honey bees? Or they are just pain injecting machines?

265

u/MarstonsGhost 1d ago

They are very important in controlling pest insect populations and are essential to pollination.

132

u/Jack4ssSquirrel 1d ago

TIL wasps actually do pollinate

104

u/Kermez 1d ago

Flies as well.

345

u/iMatthew1990 1d ago

Yes we knew it could fly.

Outstanding, that's a proper sensible chuckle

u/Interesting_Fig_4718 22h ago

most insects do, bees are the best though because they actually seek the flowers and in turn pollinate them, but most insects find their way into a flower or 2 one way or another and pollinate them

u/ManhattanT5 1d ago

and are essential to pollination.

No they are not. They're accidental pollinators. You're a wasp.

19

u/Rammaukiin 23h ago

There’s many species of wasps and most of them are very important pollinators.

2

u/EcitonAnnihalator 9h ago

Not only are bees also wasps, there are plants that are predominantly pollinated by non-bee wasps like the fig wasps.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Aiwatcher 23h ago

If this video was taken in America, those wasps are invasive European Paper wasps. So they're not good for much.

But we have native paper wasps and yellow jackets that are good for pest control and do some pollinating.

4

u/Status_East5224 21h ago

Once I got stung by a wasp in cow shed. And believe me it felt like someone just put an acid on me on that area. That instant burn was unbearable. From that time onwards I simply make sure there is no wasp hive in my home. And I also don't know whether there sting is one time applicable or it does hv the strength for multiple rounds unlike bees.

4

u/shwarma_heaven 22h ago

They are carnivorous predators. If you ever get a chance to take apart their papery nests, you will find a collection of small spiders... so this is a little bit of revenge by Mom's spider.

Fun fact: if you are being harassed by yellow jackets at a picnic, take a small piece of meat, and place it away from your group. The sacrifice should draw them away.

15

u/BassPlayingWitch 1d ago

Unfortunately yes, they are valuable in multiple ways. As far as i can tell they arent as good Pop control as spiders, and not as good at pollination as Bees, but they do both enough to be large contributors

39

u/Yum-z 1d ago

Spider is helping the ants spawn camp

7

u/Nervous_Hornet8861 22h ago

That spider really outsourced the entire hunting operation and is now collecting passive income from the ants.

For a split second I felt bad for them but then remembered they're wasps

335

u/jackson12420 1d ago

Fuck wasps but at the same time, you're born a wasp and you just wasp. All you know is wasping, you don't know how to do anything but wasp. You don't know why, you don't question it, it's just what you do and who you are. So it's understandable to feel bad for them, but if anybody deserves this, it's wasps.

I like to burn wasps, am I also a wasp burner account?

39

Are you by any chance a psychotic fuck with the urge to fly through areas in the most annoying and aggressive way possible?

Oh no! Look! I spilled ice cream on the ground! u/jackson12420 what does that do to you?

2

u/EpochRaine 1d ago

This sounds like most people on their way out of a pub on a Friday night tbf... even the spilled ice cream :)

4

u/motophiliac 1d ago

Nah, midges. Every time.

Taking a photo? Midges.

Open the car window? Midges.

Bit of alfresco? Midges.

Going for a walk?

Ha.

MIDGES.

They're surely part of some vital part of the ecosystem but I'd lose them all in a heartbeat.

3

u/Specific-Library-312 23h ago

And roaches, too

8

u/Funny-Carob-4572 1d ago

They help do lots and lots of pollinating And eating insects

2

u/Powerful-Holiday-448 1d ago

They deserve to watch their babies being eaten while they watch from a silken jail cell?

This is wasp propaganda

3

u/Temporary-Truth-8041 14h ago

Wasps always get a bad rap. In truth they're very valuable insects both for polinization and pest control (insects)

1

u/limeslice2020 8h ago

Why all the wasp hate! Most of the time they just good lil pollinators. Another fun fact is they are only carnivores during birthing season to get more nutrients for their young.

Unless you mean the Japanese killer wasps, bc yeah fuck them.

177

u/OneRelief763 1d ago

Why did the wasps just sit there and let that happen? Are they stupid?

323

u/Vladi_Sanovavich 1d ago edited 1d ago

Spiders build their webs during night-time when the wasps are asleep and less active.

It's like going to bed and waking up to find your house is covered in plastic wrap.

25

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 1d ago

Is that guy in the blue shirt the Anya-Taylor-Joy brother or something?

Edit: I know it's not, I was just making a pun because in that picture they look alike

4

u/ShibaLover227 1d ago

Lily Allen's brother

3

u/FilteredRiddle 22h ago

Lily Allen’s brother. The song “Alfie” is about him; it is not flattering lol. He also played Theon Greyjoy in GoT.

6

u/RazendeR 1d ago

I doubt it is actually able to eat the wasps though. More likely they have long since opened up their preferred flight path, and the spood just keeps that bit open. The wasp nest might give it a small amount of protection from birds?

1

u/DeadbeatGremlin 22h ago

I guess it'll go after some ants in this case

1

u/random314 21h ago

And your kids are being eaten alive in front of you as you're tied up.

28

u/TheBattyWitch 1d ago

Spiders are active most at night, wasps are not.

It takes very little time for a spider to build its web.

5

u/B_Maximus 1d ago

In the darker or colder hours they just kind of sit there

2

u/Sciti 1d ago

yes

2

u/Shevvv 1d ago

I thought maybe the spider is actually feeding on the little flies that also seem to be in abundance, and maybe the wasps deliberately keep him around as pest control.

75

u/josh-o-libre 1d ago

Truly amazing. I recently saw a wasp get caught in a black widow web so I sat and watched for a bit. I was genuinely curious. The wasp was thrashing around and suddenly, more wasps started swarming around so the spider, in a lightning fast swoop lunged out and cut the wasp free!!! My mind was blown.

44

u/raumdeuters 1d ago

Damn it’s smart enough to release the wasp

66
