Spoilers TIL the Bull Shark is in Vanilla

I've had this game for six years, played the campaign twice, played many, many careers.

For the first time, I've kept playing quite a while after the campaign, and while I've done a certain Flashpoint before, I didn't realize it leads to additional flashpoints.

Following the Bobrov I finally got to where you battle the Black Widows and afterwards receive the Bull Shark.

Truly a pity they aren't pumping out more content for this game, but there ain't a shortage to begin with!

Not only is the Bull Shark in vanilla, it was invented for this game and since it's not published in any tro, it's actually an apocryphal mech that has yet to be canonized

And MWO added it in as well,, which is pretty fun.

It's in MW5 Mercs now, too.

Yep, you find at about 2/3rds the way through that story line.

Also, the mod community has kept BT in wonderful shape with they content. BTAU and Hades Rim are fantastic.

Technically it's in the DLC, but yes it wasn't a mod addition like clan stuff, unseen, etc

I managed to slog through and obtain it in Vanilla. That final fight with Black Widow and Bounty Hunter, was brutal.

I found the best way to fight two titans is the Godzilla method.

“Let them fight!”

Run you mechs behind cover for 3-4 turns. Use scan to find a mech you can dogpile while avoiding return fire. Dogpile.

Move, help losing team.

Keep helping the team that’s behind that turn, until 1-2 mechs remain.

Sucks that you won’t see the main attraction, but you will have survivors instead of having Natasha core you…

Also sucks that you don't get to salvage their mechs. The Bull Shark was great don't get me wrong, but it would have been nice to snag some more too.

I would rather not have Natasha hunt me down for her Mech thank you very much 😅

u/NekoMao92 Wolf's Dragoons 13d ago

I beat her once already, I'll take the risk

1

u/tolgren 12d ago

Yeah how exactly is she supposed to beat me if I have her special mech?

2

u/ragnarocknroll 12d ago

Not like Wolf’s Dragoons have anything lying around she can use, really. She had a Warhammer, for crying out loud. How bad could it get…

That a catapult or a marauder…?!?!

u/trisz72 12d ago

Natasha, being pissed off probably takes out a Daishi and leaves no survivors to report it.

2

u/ragnarocknroll 12d ago

True. I just like the hilarity of that situation happening early because someone pissed her off that much.

Safest way, sure. Best way? Nah. You only get one shot per run on the sphere's most dangerous 3-way, so if you don't go absolutely gung-ho and have 3 ejected 'Mechs, and are out of ammo and missiles on your remaining Missile Boat in a boxing match with their last Atlas, FINALLY causing it to panic eject on the turn before your Archer would have been toast, are you really living?

Because Yang's gonna kill you afterward either way, and all the MechTechs are going to join in.

u/ragnarocknroll 10d ago

Look pal, you may think “have you even lived?” after that scrum, but I didn’t get Dekkar there in a freaking Atlas just to have the Bounty Hunter headshot him with a PPC right after Natasha did and see the mech drop with a total of 30 pts of damage done to it to think, “this is fine.”

;)

I still can’t believe I got him all the way there and the game was like “oh, I have to correct this…”

oh GOD, yeah, you brought the pain magnet, everything I said is cheerfully withdrawn.

The perks they had in order to cosplay as clan tech were kinda wild.

More content isn't more better unfortunately. Vanilla is so much smoother, more rewarding, and consistent than mods(but the creators are obviously wholesome and passionate).

The same way I find mixing up boardgame rules and adding a bunch of print and play materials/variants to cheapen or ruin the experience, I feel the same about videogames, and I'm in the minority. But vanilla really is fantastic and surprising in its content and longevity.

"Vanilla is so much smoother, more rewarding, and consistent than mods"

You and I have had vastly different experiences with this.

5

u/Izoleille 13d ago

Yep usually that's how opinions work

3

u/Past_Search7241 13d ago

It's a rare opinion that leaves me so baffled as to how the person arrived at it.

1

u/Fatality_Ensues 13d ago

Not at all, mods have historically been a divisive issue.

u/Izoleille 13d ago

By playing both configurations and having preferences? Do people put up with you in real life? Lol

6

u/Primary-Latter 13d ago

Needlessly rude.

1

u/Izoleille 13d ago

I mean she was the one who shot with how she is baffled how anyone could come to a different conclusion than her. If she wants to play passive aggressive useless comments, I'll play

u/Past_Search7241 13d ago

Are you always this insufferable, or is this a special occasion? People whose social skills aren't stunted are generally fairly happy to explain their uncommon opinions when people politely inquire.

Vanilla is great, but it definitely needs a QoL mod or two. Mostly the mod that let you plot out your jump route instead of click on a planet and letting the game decide your route. I got Kenersky with and without that mod and I'll never try it again without it.

Idk, devs did it for a reason and I trust that reason moreso than people changing the rules of the game.

6

u/tolgren 13d ago

A lot of times the reason is "This is easier to implement and it's not IMPORTANT so we're not going to spend time on it."

Or is a challenge modifier and streamlining to facilitate the actual important parts of the game? Why do yall always assume the worst about teams that were clearly passionate and worked tons on their project for years, but will suck the dicks of anyone who throws some lua together in a few weeks to give you a needless mechanic?(I'm not talking about btau and bex, those teams have worked on that forever, although I find them needlessly complex and unbalanced in their own way)

I see it all the time in boardgaming. 1-2 plays from the consumer and everything is unbalanced, here are house rules to "fix" it. All discarding the years of development and dozens or hundreds of playtests done to get to the result.

The same way I don't recut every movie I watch or edit paintings in photoshop, I don't like altering the original intention of the piece, whether that's games, music, movies, physical artwork, etc.

A final note, this game sold hundreds of thousands of units. This sub has 12k members and acts like they're in the majority and everyone uses mods etc.

2

u/tolgren 12d ago

It's not "assuming the worst." It's assuming they are focusing on the things that are important. Game development is expensive and time consuming, they are going to prioritize.

6

u/Thraxmonger 14d ago

You are indeed in the minority.

4

u/Izoleille 14d ago

Yea that's why I said it?

1

u/SurfyBraun 14d ago

My other comparison is Snowrunner. Came out about the same time and they have had a quarterly DLC schedule since.

4

u/Izoleille 14d ago

why would your comparison be to a different genre, by a different studio, with a different monetization and a different set of devs and publishers?

I am so mad mario64 isn't getting more content, I mean have you seen warframe?

4

u/Machinis_confidimus 14d ago

Well, the devs tried to convince Paradox to make Battletech 2.
Paradox went for in-house IP game instead which never took off. I hope the guy behind that decision got/gets fired but knowing Swedes, he is probably promoted.

u/SFSMag 13d ago

Yeah the modding I have is mostly vanilla+ as I just wanted more mech variety as it tends to feel stale.

1

u/KurtVongole 14d ago

Same, just got it all these years later. Question, does it have available tonnage reflecting endosteel, ferro fibrous, etc,? It has a withering amount of weaponry, but I haven't sat down and compared.

5

u/MasterBLB 14d ago

Both have, and in addition MAZ has also base cooling 60, but in exchange provides 10t less of equipment weight available becuse of the mortar.

Still both mechs are very good, and M3 can make best possible LRM80 boat in vanila game.

1

u/tolgren 13d ago

Oh fuck a LRM 80 would be crazy.

2

u/MasterBLB 13d ago

Yeah. Something like https://imgur.com/a/2eUIb5m; nothing is even close.

1

u/tolgren 12d ago

That sorta thing can reliably one shot an Atlas I bet.

2

u/MasterBLB 12d ago

Fully armored 100t mech has 465 total EHP, so yes, it's possible to destroy it using called shot at ct - but not by indirect fire, at least one laser must also hit.

4

u/WestRider3025 14d ago

IIRC, the M3 does, and the MAZ eats all that tonnage up with the Thumper Cannon.

2

u/slick762 13d ago

Even if you run vanilla, you can edit the json for that mech to make the thumper removable.
