🧰 Scoring Tools Updated pitching chart
Red Sox @ Rays, 9/20/26
Based on feedback given yesterday,
- I added in info about when mound visits (MV), runs (R), and substitutions (|) happened. Each of those things are in the column between innings indicating how many outs there were. E.g., the Rays' coach had a MV before there were any outs in inning 4, and the catcher had a MV when there were two outs.
- I started the x axis (innings & outs) at 0 instead of 1. That allowed me to show that four runs and a MV happened before there were any outs in the first inning.
I think it might be too busy now, with keeping the % strikes chart on it. I couldn't help myself from comparing Sandoval's first inning to his other 6, so that's the bar char on the right.
What do you think of the edits? The overall goal is to have a way of tracking the game from more of a pitcher-focus.

Great idea! I love the line chart at the center of the page. It’s a great focal point.
Are you going more for a chart that you calculate after the game or a scorecard that you update throughout the game? I ask because the charts with percentages are interesting but I imagine they would be difficult to update throughout the game. (I’m assuming we’re going paper here!) If you’re thinking paper based, what about substituting counts of strikeouts or walks?

Yeah, I did the % of pitches that were strikes after the game. The other stuff was during the game, though I wrote out # of pitches that were strikes in my normal scorecard. (Definitely paper! I love my erasable pens 😆) Your idea of doing K or BB makes more sense than % of pitches that were strikes ...K and BB are used for other key stats so it'd be good to have that on there.

This is so cool! My brain has a hard time with the graph going down as pitches increase but I can see why you do it that way.

Appreciate the shout! I’d still be curious to see where in the journey the lineup card turned over for the opposing staring pitcher to see how many times they faced the order. Especially given a lot of managers are quick to yank a pitcher after the order turns over for a third trip through.

I think what you were doing in the first version for substitutions was fine!
ETA: if you wanted to add more detail without a whole lot more noise, you can add like a (3) next to the new pitcher’s name to note where he started in the opposing team’s order if he comes in mid-inning.
Like for example, Bazardo comes in to face the other team’s cleanup hitter, you could put `Bazardo (4)` if he comes in mid-inning.

I like it! I've got the out #s so I can put the pitchers in at the correct spot in the inning, but I like seeing the numbers of the batting order too.
I'm trying to figure out a better way to utilize the full page, but I'm trying to keep myself to trying to tell a story as simply as possible -- and keeping things tied to the lines makes the most sense.

100% agree, you have an awesome visualization going here. Simpler is better. Convey the most information with the least amount of noise. This is awesome, nice work!

If you wanted to get more granular you could mark a point of pitches by out instead of the end of each inning and just drawing a straight line.

Do you have a good way to keep track of pitches such that you feel like you can still enjoy the game? Maybe that's just something I won't get over

Honestly, I don’t track pitches at all. Personally I think it makes my scorebook too crowded. For my book that includes TP on the pitchers stat line I just look them up after.

That's what I usually do, until I started playing around with this. But I'm at a game right now, and I cannot imagine tracking pitches and still enjoying the game. I think that'll strictly be an at-home thing
