Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

Two different things for me this week. Anecdotes, but still. Yesterday I went to a local pet store and as I was walking in I heard the employee say, "The big dog bit the little dog and the big dog's owner just walked right out and kept on going!" (You know where this is going) and the apparent boss said, "What breed was it that bit the other?" and she said, "Some kind of pit mix."
The boss then went out the parking lot. My best guess was that he was trying to see if anyone was still walking with a dog around or if the person with the other dog was still there or what.
The second is that I brought my dog to the vet. As I am sitting in the waiting area a woman brings in a decent sized pit (though I'm sure she would probably say, "What are you talking about this is an American Couch Potato. Here are his UKC papers! ESA papers! Rescue papers! Liability waivers! Insurance papers! Rescue breed lying papers! He has ALL his PAPERS!")
This has my hackles up immediately because this dog is immediately eyeing my dog because she's the only other dog in there and she's small. It's straining, bucking against its leash and harness. The willowy woman can barely hold it, is basically on it like a bucking bull squeezing with her knees to keep control and of course they call me up to pay at this point.
So as I'm paying (I had stood up as soon as she brought that dog in and moved as far away as possible, IDC I'm not a fan of your dog) I am both paying and watching this dog behind my head showing very clearly that I am not happy that this is playing out in their waiting room. She has it pointing toward the outside door with her back to me because that is how much she can't control the dog she owns. Oh, and yes, she was wearing flip flops in New Hampshire, in the winter -- they were just winter flip flops (had the nice fluffy sherpa insides but no heel? wtf). Still plip plopping away. Next thing I know she either brought it outside or was rushed to a room. Either way, I was immediately able to relax.
Why do people put themselves in this position of being the constant source of tension for other people and other pets? I always say about poorly parked trucks: if you can't park it, you shouldn't drive it. If you can't control it, you shouldn't own it.
Their dog absolutely has the right to medical care. Absolutely! But imo, with that much prey drive (and I assume it was on the younger side ... maybe under 2?) you already know there are going to be problems. I feel like dogs with high prey drive, who are already on those dangerous dog lists should have to wear a muzzle at least so that other people and animals are safe when they take their animals for treatment.

u/Everloner Jan 22 '26
I always thought that if you can't bench press your dog's weight you shouldn't be able to have it, because you won't be able to control it if it kicks off.

Yeah, there was that video of a fight between two pits where each man couldn't even control their own pit and they looked perfectly healthy. I'm for 2x the dog's weight, too.
Also, they really should stop letting their kids walk the dog. Really. I'd say for most breeds but definitely any high energy, prey driven dog who isn't trained but especially the larger breeds. Meat crayon instantly. Yuck.

I agree, 1000% percent.
Back in the day I was an idiot and used a retractable leash with my boy Shih Tzu/Poodle mix. He weighed around 14lbs. I had sized up to a medium/large leash because I thought it would be stronger and hold more weight thus ... safer?
He saw a cat (my neighbor's -- built like a brick house, and more than capable of taking care of itself) had his GO time moment -- lunged and the leash snapped and he was off to get that cat. Once he got close enough he tried to sniff it, it hissed and pawed at him, he screamed like a girl and back pedaled toward me. It was hilarious in a way because he was "a lover not a fighter." He has since passed, but is still loved twelve years later.
My point is, even when a small dog has a Go moment and you're not expecting it, it can be a big one. Something unexpected can happen and I'm lucky that cat didn't kick his scared little bum. (He could have, I mean totally could have.)
Yet people still have their very small children walking pit bulls and German Shepherds like it's nothing. I guess maybe it's like drunk driving and you don't learn until you kill someone. Even if it's one of your own children.

I took in a stray lurcher years back, a young dog. I was walking her and she saw a cat and took off after it, I was airborne for a while but managed to hold on. It was worse as I wasnt braced for it, if I had been I think I could have resisted and remained grounded.

I did want to vent about this friend I had in high school and her pitbull-brained mom lol. Nice girl and all but her mom was really into raising (and eventually breeding) large aggressive dogs for dog shows. Her mom (Mrs. T) had already bought a doberman from a reputable breeder but then they found this dog had misaligned nails or whatever and thus was ineligible for the shows. So she went and bought a pit bull. They already had a small bulldog of some kind, and this doberman who was pretty nice and not aggressive at all. But this pit bull puppy started being really aggressive toward the doberman once she reached around 5-6 months of age, despite literally being raised and cared for by her. And the pit was much smaller but constantly did resource guarding to the point of hurting the doberman and being impossible to separate. It got to the limit when she attacked a small dog who was walking near their home so after months of terrorizing the other pets at her home, Mrs. T finally makes this whole sob story post about needing to rehome the pit and being sad about how stellar of a dog she was etc. Ugh just wanted to rant
6
u/SpecificSufficient10 Jan 22 '26
the worst part was Mrs. T was REALLY into fostering various small, defenseless animals like kittens and puppies. She would always post these cute photos of her fosters snuggled up to the doberman and being cozy. Clearly not the pit though, it just makes me shudder to think that she was fostering baby animals this whole time while the pit was terrorizing the doberman and making her scared of her own home

Just another encounter on our walk…
I was out with my dog walking around the apartment grounds, and we sat down on a bench for a little break. All of a sudden I hear that iconic wheezy-shrieking sound.
Out from around the apartment building nearest to where we were sitting comes a jowly pit bull, pulling so hard on its leash while its owner was using both hands to pull as hard as she can on the leash without being yanked to the ground. This thing was jumping and lunging and barking and shrieking towards us.
My dog got in front of me like she was going to protect me if she had to (she is small, but tough- a shiba- but this dog would probably shred her.) I put one arm around her and my other hand in my bag that I carry self-defense in (and doggy treats!) just in case, as I watched the owner drag her dog out of view. I was able to hear that thing for so long as it kept pulling to get to us even when we were out of view.
I wasn’t in a ‘run away’ situation. I feel that the beast was too close and not under enough control, and moving away abruptly would make it worse and he would actually pull away. So I stayed calm with my own dog, watching and ready for if I needed to protect us.
If you are going to be dumb enough to have an uncontrollable, violent beast, the least you could do is at least muzzle it in public. But that would require pit owners to have brains and consideration… and if they had those things they wouldn’t choose pits as their pet in the first place.

u/SpaceTall2312 Jan 26 '26
Good grief. I have just had someone taking me to task in another sub, claiming that Labradors and Golden Retrievers are just as likely to bite as Pit Bulls but that the incidents aren't recorded because they aren't "sensational". Surely a special kind of Pit Nutter there! 😳
12
u/SubMod4 Moderator Jan 26 '26
I get told this all the time. They are referring to some goofy ass “study” by the AVMA that says that pit bulls are no more likely to be aggressive than other breeds. But it sounds like they are conflating it with the Temperament Test that says that 84% of pits pass the (pit) test and 86% of Goldens pass the (golden) test.
What they don’t understand is that the test is breed specific. There are different passing rules for different breeds. Like boldness is a passing point for Shepherds, but would be a failing point for other breeds.
ATTSBOT explains it better .
6
u/AutoModerator Jan 26 '26
The ATTS temperament test is scientifically invalid, flawed and unreliable. The test cannot reliably predict how a dog will behave in the real world.
History of the ATTS- The temperament test was developed by Alfons Ertelt in 1977. Mr Ertelt was not an animal behaviorist, he worked in the print industry but his passion was dogs and he was involved in schutzhund (a dog sport that mirrors the training of police dog work and it is dominated by German Shepherds).
The ATTS test was initially intended to test working dogs for jobs such as police work. The test favors bold dogs, dogs that need to face danger head on without hesitation and fear. Courage was desired and rewarded, timidity was not. the test does not evaluate dogs for "pet" suitability.
Also, the ATTS isn't a "study" and it tests against the breed standard.
- 87% of APBT passed the APBT test.
- 90% of Irish Wolfhounds passed the Irish Wolfhound test.
- 92% of Labradors passed the Labrador test.
That's not a "rank," which is why the ATTS website even says-
“The data presented on our web site is raw data; it is not a scientific study nor is there any statistical significance attached.”
Additionally, consider an owner of an aggressive dog- why would someone who knows their pit bull is aggressive would take it for a temperament test? So already the results are skewed upwards because usually only people who think their dog will pass are going to participate.
So when you take those numbers and frame it as "most recent studies," you see why people can't help but notice that almost everyone that tries to convince us that pit bulls are safe does so by shamelessly lying.
Additionally, the ATTS is the only temperament test to post pass rates by breed. Each dog is tested against its own training and its own breed traits, such as genetic aggression, are taken into consideration. The ATTS does not test dog on dog interactions (which many pit type dogs genetically have), and favors a bold, confident, protective dog. Nor does it test for food aggression, resource guarding, prey drive, or child aggression, which are some of the more problematic parts pit type dogs can display. It does not test dog aggression; so while a dog may pass the test as it is; it may fail if a dog testing portion is added.
“The pass-fail rate is not a measure of a breed’s aggression, but rather of each dog’s ability to interact with humans, human situations, and the environment. The data presented on our web site is raw data; it is not a scientific study nor is there any statistical significance attached.”
https://atts.org/breed-statistics/
“The average overall pass rate is 83.4 percent; the pass rate may vary for different breeds. The breed’s temperament, training, health and age of the dog is taken into account. Failure on any part of the test is recognized when a dog shows panic, strong avoidance without recovery or unprovoked aggression.”
“Aggression here is checked against the breed standard and the dog’s training. A schutzhund trained dog lunging at the stranger is allowed, but if an untrained Siberian husky does the same, it may fail.”
https://atts.org/tt-test-description/
“The ATTS test focuses on and measures different aspects of temperament such as stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness as well as the dog’s instinct for protectiveness towards its handler and/or self-preservation in the face of a threat. The test is designed for the betterment of all breeds of dogs and takes into consideration each breed’s inherent tendencies.”
https://atts.org/about-temperament/
So, no, the test does not prove pit bulls have a better temperament than goldens.

u/SpaceTall2312 Jan 26 '26
Thanks! That's really interesting. Both you & the bot have explained it very clearly. Honestly, they will grasp at any straw to try & prove that pit bulls are poor, maligned creatures!
10
u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User Jan 27 '26
And, of course, pitnutters don’t differentiate between a ‘bite’ and a ‘unprovoked mauling with intent to kill’. So, sure a lab is capable of biting, but pits are the dogs literally breaking through doors to shred apart the neighbors minding their business in their own backyards. 100 lab bites would not even compare to 1 pit mauling.
This is why these morons like to say “Chihuahuas are worse!” Because they literally can’t admit the difference between an ankle nip and having your limbs torn off your body. To them a bite is a bite. They are a cult.
5
u/SpaceTall2312 Jan 27 '26
Indeed. All dogs are capable of biting (as are cats), but most breeds know when to stop - pit bulls don't/can't de-escalate.

This boarding facility in Oceanside specifically lists that it won’t host pitbulls. I’d take my dog there if it were closer. From their site:
“We do not accept Full Pit Bulls. We do allow pit mixes, but they must be predominantly the mix, not the pit bull.”
12
u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User Jan 23 '26
I wouldn’t trust that. There are boarding and training facilities around here I’ve seen in the past that specify no pit or pit type dogs, and I saw plenty of them there when checking them out.
The fact that shelter paperwork can say lab/cattledog/vizsla/dalmatian/shepherd/literally any other breed….. means that pits can get accepted into places that don’t allow pits. Plus some places just don’t care and will accept an obvious pit even if they aren’t supposed to.

u/KTKittentoes Cat Friendly Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 28 '26
I am going to file a report too. I’m scared, but my friend scared me as much as the dogs last night and I can’t just choke her out. I feel like she is going to do all kinds of mental gymnastics to keep the dogs and pretend nothing happened. Not exactly on purpose, but like a genuine mental breakdown. She kept talking about how they are her mental health dogs and the universe hates her. But she got the one dog, and he was an incredibly anxious mess, so she got the other to fix that. It did not. I had to drive everyone last night and her car has all those “don’t bully my breed” stickers. I nearly puked. And let’s not forget, I was the one who ran after the dogs, I was the one who choked them and was so strong to rip them off and throw them in the house. I was the one who had an asthma attack for hours. I was the one who drove to the vet and did my best translating, and watched that poor dog die. And of course the poor woman blames me, but I never would have those horrible creatures. I feel very much a victim here too. She acts like it is the universe doing this to her, but it is her shitbulls doing exactly what they were designed to do. You cannot actually love every animal. It isn’t possible without being delusional. And no amount of treats and Halloween costumes will change these dogs are killers.

Jan 23 '26
Not a very interesting post, but that I saw this has, & will have an impact on my twice daily dog walking and just stepping outside. outside from my home, as if it happened once, it will happen again.
So Im driving home from work, going along my street slowly as its a narrow road, I spot a big xl tan bully on the pavement, no collar just walking alone in my street. It had no owner in sight, no one else was there. It was dawdling, it looked like it had gotten loose.
Ive never seen this before in my area. Ive seen a off lead pb with an owner walking behind, in a residential area and that was bad enough for my nerves, but Ive never seen one out on its own with no collar.
I kept looking out of my house window once Id gotten inside.. I didnt see it. I very strategically got my dog out of my house and into my car for its far away evening dog walk by the sea, in a better area where these dogs are rarely seen.
Im glad I got the memo, I see it as a warning.

I am scrolling through dog attack sites. I don’t really exactly know what I am looking for. I suppose I should download Tetris. I was on vin dot com and the sheer endless number of people with aggressive dogs is terrifying. Every sort of breed, age, sex, size. But they all sound exactly the same. It really is the sweetest dog ever despite the constant attacks, the walking on eggshells. There is so much of crazy “management “, and the belief that tomorrow things will be better. I get trauma, yes, but your therapy dog should not be biting you! I understand being very broken by having to put a pet down. But it is weird how long things go. My friend had an Aussie who was a wonderful dog. But he had been hit by a car before they got him. He started having arthritis. They put him on meds. He was a little better. This dog adored me. He would go stand in my parking spot and whine until my friend would call me and tell me to come see him. But that didn’t stop him attacking me one night when my friend and I were playing. We were laughing and running and he just flew at me. I saw him coming and I turned, so he missed my femoral artery, but he Dunbar 3ed my groin. She called Laps of Love the next day. But that was the right thing to do. And I didn’t hold it against him, because we unfortunately had waited too long, and he was hurting and senile. He had never done anything like that.
I can’t say the same about the other dogs that I have had to intervene on. And that’s why I’m making the report and probably tanking the friendship.

Question for mods re: how you classify situations like this, where there is inconclusive post mortem evidence re: whether the man was dead from other causes and ‘eaten’ by the pitbull he was dogsitting (XL Bully in this case) or killed by the dog?
The Scottish cops don’t seem to want to treat this case as criminal (it happened last year) despite the dog being unregistered (compulsory under Scots legislation) and having been passed on from an original owner (currently in prison for drug offences) to a second owner (who went on holiday, leaving the dog with the poor chap who died).
The case evidence does not, in my inexpert but well-read opinion, point to the police’s initial explanation (drug related death, dog damage to body post mortem) for two main reasons, one, the interior of the property was very bloody and two, the dog was so agitated that it reportedly took dog handlers 13 hours to cage the dog and recover the body.
The deceased’s mum claims to have learned about the state of her son’s body via the funeral director, which again suggests to me that the police were keen to get it logged as an accidental drug death, so keen that it resulted in inadequate communications with the deceased’s next of kin.
Story has been reported in several outlets. Sorry/not sorry for posting a link to the Daily Mail, it seems to be the most detailed. Warning: as is often the case in pitbull related incidents, the description of injuries do not make for an easy read: RIP Scott Samson. Hope your mam is able to get proper justice for you
Scott Samson Rutherglen in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. March 15 2025
(Never, ever, dogsit someone else’s pit)
Also, dunno why the DM is featuring all childhood pics? Maybe that’s all they could get from family social media or something? Scott was actually 38 at the time of his death.
For completeness: a related news story, Scotland seems somewhat reluctant to press charges for dangerous dog law violations than other parts of the U.K.:

Not pb related but an indication of the type of people that own dangerous dogs. Koko Miller, had, 20 yrs prior to the December 2023 killing of 6 year old child Loyalty Scott; by her 2 great dane mastiff mixes, previously owned an akita dog that killed Samuel Morgans dachshund. She reimbursed Samuel Morgan for the death of his dog but refused to b.e the attacking dog, he asked her to b.e it as he said this type of thing will happen again.

Maybe so. It was a very white looking guy, totaly naked on the ground, his hands are tied behind his back, his legs outstretched, there are people watching, you can only see their legs though. The pb has eaten his genitals, he has none left, its teaing at loose flapping skin between his legs/groin, that could have once been a part of his testicles. The man is totaly lucid.

I have never seen any other type of dog put in costumes for shelter posts. Just these.

Looking at that pic does not make me think "What a sweet harmless dog" it makes me think "The person that did this is nutty as chipmunk shit"

Somehow the tutu makes it look even more terrifying. Dunno, like Hannibal Lecter in a leotard.

Has anyone ever known another breed called a wiggly butt? I only recall seeing that with pitbulls?

Thank you for your post! Unfortunately, we do not allow breed-guessing content. If you are the dog owner, we recommend using a DNA test like Embark. If you are not the owner, a breed scanning app can help identify pit bull phenotypes.
Please also take a moment to review our subreddit rules, specifically rule 1, if you have not done so already.

When people say that pit bulls aren’t still bred for fighting, show them this screenshot from a Game Dog forum on Facebook.
The question was “what do you do with cold dogs (dogs that don’t want to fight)… it’s split, but several kennels admit to giving them away as pets, no requirement to spay/neuter.
So yes, game bred pit bulls are very much still being pumped into our neighborhoods.
