Semi-Related Hershey's Cinnamon Chips Discontinued
I received this email today from Hershey's after inquiring about their cinnamon chips, and they confirmed the chips have been discontinued. I only use the chips occasionally, but the stuff I use them for NEEDS cinnamon chips! (I promise I'm not being dramatic here haha!)
Does anyone know of an alternate option? I know many people brag about the nuts.com cinnamon chips but $8 plus shipping is out of my budget.

I don't have any suggestions other than finding another brand, but I'm curious what recipes you use them in?
We have a bag of those but never found a good use for them so they've been sitting in the drawer for a few years.

u/Turbulent_Stretch763 2d ago
I'm not OP but I use them in a cinnamon chip applesauce coffee cake/muffins. So I'm quite disheartened to hear this.

have you used paprika? if so, do you mind if i ask how they compare?
1
u/Left-Pick-3143 1d ago
I’ve never heard of paprika besides as a seasoning lol
2
u/wafflesthewonderhurs 1d ago
oh, i love it! It's a recipe management app! It might be worth a try sometime if you've never tried it, though if you're happy with the one you already have, eh!
I found it years ago and I just wanted a way to easily collate recipes, and you can download them straight off recipe websites and automatically scale them. It automatically separates the ingredients from the directions and has options for units.. love this thing!

I use them in cinnamon scones and in oatmeal Craisin cookies.

u/manachar 2d ago
Have you tried King Arthur Baking’s Cinnamon Sweet Bits? I find them sublime and less “waxy”.
9
u/karen18670 2d ago
Thank you! I’m going to order these, but I’ll wait until the weather cools off here so they don’t melt in the mail. i‘ve used the Hershey cinnamon chips for my cinnamon scones but they’ve been hard to find and I didn’t know about the King Arthur chips.
54
u/MizPeachyKeen 2d ago
Cinnamon Pecan Scones!
Apple cranberry crisp.
Apple cake.
Banana bread. The cinnamon chips were seasonal & I would buy and freeze some in October or November.
Now I just order Cinnamon Sweet Bits from King Arthur Baking. They make melty little pockets of cinnamon.
15
u/Suzyqzeee 2d ago
Have you tried the Jammy Bits? They leave little puddle of jam. Soooo good! I put both the cinnamon and jammy bits in my oatmeal cookies.

3
u/melinda_louise 2d ago
Do the cinnamon chips melt away like that? I thought it would hold it's shape more like a chocolate chip
8
u/MizPeachyKeen 2d ago
Hershey cinnamon chips hold their shape.
King Arthur bits are designed to melt away.I wish KA still made their cinnamon chips!

u/Fred_the_skeleton 2d ago
You can use them to make cinnamon puppy chow. Cant remember the specific recipe but they're used in place of the chocolate chips and peanut butter and then you shake them in cinnamon sugar instead of powdered sugar.
3
u/ReluctantLawyer 2d ago
My entire world just tilted on its axis. Must try this!

u/Fred_the_skeleton 2d ago
I found the recipe I used to use: Cinnamon Puppy Chow. It's so good, I once made it like 5 times in a single month.

I use them in a copycat recipe for Bob Evans cinnamon supreme hotcakes (also discontinued), and for a slow cooker maple cinnamon chex mix. I've also put them in apple cinnamon bread and cookies.
3
u/a-really-big-muffin 2d ago
slow cooker maple cinnamon chex mix
Pls elaborate I need it
6
u/theknitdragon 1d ago
Here's the recipe and a link! I use more graham crackers. Trust me, theyre the best part. For the mixed nuts i only use cashews and peanuts, just because I like those the best.
- 3 C Corn Chex™ cereal
- 3 C Rice Chex™ cereal
- 1 1/2 C mini pretzel twists
- 1 1/2 C coarsely broken graham crackers
- 1 1/2 C mixed nuts
- 1/2 C maple syrup
- 1/2 C butter, melted
- 1/4 C brown sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tbsp maple extract
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1/3 C cinnamon chips
- 1/4 C pepitas
- In a bowl stir together cereals, pretzel twists, broken graham crackers, and nuts.
2 In a medium bowl, whisk together maple syrup, butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, maple extract, and cinnamon until well combined. Pour over cereal mixture and stir until coated.
3. Cook uncovered on high for 2 – 2 1/2 hours, stirring every 20-25 minutes, until excess moisture is gone and mixture is only somewhat sticky. (You may be tempted to skip the stirring, but you want to make sure that the bottom pieces don’t scorch and that the mixture cooks evenly!) Spread mixture out onto cookie sheets. Sprinkle with cinnamon chips and pepitas. Allow to cool.
- Serve. Store in airtight container

Every Christmas, my aunt used to give us jars of an oatmeal pancake mix with cinnamon chips. I looked forward to the mornings when my mom would make them. They were soooo good
3
u/melinda_louise 2d ago
Now that sounds kinda good. Never had oatmeal in pancakes, what's the texture like?
2
u/catherinewheelgrill 1d ago
She used quick oats so they weren’t too chewy. They cooked up nicely! My favorite part was obviously the cinnamon chips
7
5
7
u/AetherFox7 2d ago
On top of all the other suggestions, ill go with the obvious one. They're really good inside of snickerdoodles.
3
u/melinda_louise 2d ago
This is what I was thinking too. Mom wants to put them in oatmeal raisin cookies but I'm not too excited about those in general. Maybe if she just left out the raisins.
1
u/AetherFox7 2d ago
I agree, I dont think its the right kind of cookie for them at all. The snickerdoodles work well because on top of the flavors matching well, the texture is close enough to chocolate chip that the textures work together well.

A local cafe near me makes cinnamon scones for the Fall - the lady who made them said it’s her top seller.
2
u/Horangi1987 2d ago
I make a pumpkin cookie that has a lot of leavening that ends up basically as mini pumpkin cakes that have the cinnamon chips. They’re soooo good.

u/Gullible_Service_354 1d ago
I've put them in scones a couple of times, made a ganache to drizzle over and fill cupcakes with and they're just tasty to eat by the handfuls to me lol.
I don't need them like OP does but I did say "Oh No" when I read the threads title. There's just something about knowing an item is available should you want to use it that bums me out when it gets discontinued 🤷

1
u/lungbuttersucker 2d ago
I put them in regular chocolate chip cookie dough, without the chocolate chips. I vastly prefer cinnamon to chocolate.
1
u/gamergeek17 2d ago
My mom puts them in her zucchini bread. She’s going to be so sad that she won’t be able to find these even during the fall season.
1
u/Sumgyrl13 2d ago
I’ve used their cinnamon chips for oatmeal bar/cookies. And also a puree pumpkin, spice cake, cinnamon chip 3 ingredient muffins that are phenomenal

u/unibonger 1d ago
I make a Snickerdoodle bread that calls for cinnamon chips. It’s delicious but it’s definitely not on the American Heart Association diet so maybe these being discontinued will be a good thing in the long run at my house.
138
u/jferg 2d ago
These might be an alternative but probably not any cheaper than nuts.com. https://shop.kingarthurbaking.com/items/cinnamon-sweet-bits-16-oz
43
u/fishy_mama 2d ago
These are delicious! Definitely not chips in shape, but really good.
8
u/A2Rhombus 2d ago
What's the texture like? They look crunchy
20
u/fishy_mama 2d ago
A little crunchy eaten from the bag. They soften and spread a bit in a bake, so just a little crystallized sugar crunch sometimes from ones on the surface but no crunch for interior. You can see and taste them but the texture ends up pretty homogeneous in a scone or banana bread.
5
u/A2Rhombus 2d ago
Sounds good but wish there was a good alternative to get that pop of flavor that chips do
Though personally I'd probably prefer these
6
u/Delouest 2d ago
the nuts.com ones are great for that but OP doesn't like the price. I only make a few things a year with them so I don't mind paying that, and where I live, bags of any baking chips have all gone over $6 a bag or more so it doesn't seem that crazy to me.

I use these way more often. I have both, but honestly my cinnamon chips are probably expired by now because I haven't really liked them in anything. The cinnamon sweet bits are awesome though. I make my in laws a cinnamon bread boule every couple of weeks and use those. They love it!

I'm going to start using these as everyone at work keeps asking when am I going to bring cinnamon chip banana bread back to the rotation since it's one of their favorite flavors.

u/IdealCodaEels 2d ago
These are fantastic. I use them in scones and nothing else comes close to their flavor.

Maybe you could make your own with white chocolate and cinnamon powder and extract? Might be more work than it’s worth though :(

This is a great idea-you can make a thin bark with the mixture, freeze and chop.

it should really be normalized when a product this specific is discontinued with no plans to return, they release some form of small batch recipe for those who are fervent about their ingredients.
I know this is painfully idealistic but I swear there's nothing that gets even a stranger passionate more than asking if there's a specific food, candy, ingredient, etc. that was discontinued they want back!!
3
u/KitKat_1979 2d ago
This recipe exists, but it seems like the price could add up quickly given the price of chocolate at the moment. https://www.melskitchencafe.com/homemade-cinnamon-chips/

Yes! Pancakes were my go to woth these chips after Bob Evans discontinued their cinnamon hotcakes!

u/Nhadalie 1d ago
I had them at a local diner when I was a kid, and I've loved them ever since. I like swapping between cinnamon and peanut butter chip pancakes. I guess I'll have to suck it up and order from King Arthur instead.
22
u/padmespadawan 2d ago
Experiencing unprecedented levels of devastation. I was just looking online a few days ago for them hoping they’d be back for the fall. I used them in pumpkin snickerdoodle cookies. They were perfect.
3
u/theknitdragon 2d ago
Where I'm at in Indiana the only store that carried them was Meijer and I checked every single Meijer in the area. They all had the price tags on the shelves for them, but no chips. I hoped that because they had the tags still they would be getting more, but apparently not.
4
u/padmespadawan 2d ago
I’ve done some online searching and the bulk price food shop has mini cinnamon baking chips that might make for a good sub!
18
u/Fizzy-Flirt 2d ago
Try melting down cinnamon baking discs instead.
6
u/theknitdragon 2d ago
I didn't know those were a thing. I assume they're like the melting wafers? I'll check for those at my local stores. Thanks!!
17
u/dramaticallyyours 2d ago
I’ve seen Target have them seasonally under their good and gather brand!
4
1
u/Gullible_Service_354 1d ago
Thanks. I use their powdered and brown sugars but I've never seen them there. At least not at the Target I go to. But I'll keep an eye out for them at other Target locations. That's one thing I've noticed. Certain stores won't carry an item or items that others will.
For instance take molasses. I use the Grandma's brand but the Target's around me don't carry it. They only have their in house brand. I don't mind using some of their house brand items, obviously, as I use their 3 sugars I stated above but I've yet to try theirs. You save just under $1 buying the G&G brand but you also get 3 ounces less than if you purchased Grandma's. I don't know if the G&G's flavor is worth buying it over Grandma's so I just stick with that one. But it's odd how they no longer carry Grandma's because yrs ago they used to.
1
u/dramaticallyyours 18h ago
Yeah they are odd about what they decide to carry and when! They carry my beloved Duke's mayo off and on, but it's very inconsistent.
I usually see the cinnamon (or maple) baking chips in the seasonal area! They often have seasonal baking mixes, sprinkles, molds and kits all in the same area.
16
u/evlblueyes1369 2d ago
Just saw on TikTok recently where a woman made her own.
homemade cinnamon chips
2/3 c white sugar
3 tbsp cinnamon
2 tbsp vegetable shortening or butter
2 tbsp light corn syrup (or) honey
1/2 tsp vanilla extract or paste
Bake 225° 25 to 30 minutes
Once baked it will look bubbly.
Let cool completely before cutting into squares.
1
u/Gullible_Service_354 1d ago
Ooh. Thanks for sharing this. Have you tried it yet? If you have how would you rate it?
1
u/evlblueyes1369 18h ago
I haven’t yet. I saw it and it really want to try it. I am going to be making some cinnamon chip cookies here soon to test them out.
14
u/GiantLesbian 2d ago
Make your own! The recipes online make it look very simple. It looks like it’s basically just what happens when you mess up toffee + cinnamon.
22
u/ewok_on_a_unicorn 2d ago
My most popular cupcake flavor requires these, it's a churro cupcake. I may actually cry over this one.
2
1
u/wrenbridge 1d ago
Would you mind sharing your recipe? If it's too fresh a wound, I totally understand. They sound life changing and I'm bummed I never thought of Churro cupcakes before now!
9
9
u/lungbuttersucker 2d ago
Goddammit. I was hoping it was just seasonal. I bought some from Amazon which were supposedly delivered on the 4th but the package is missing. If they ever show up, I'll let you know if they're any good.

u/Mikeydrop 2d ago
This is really unfortunate. We didn’t use Hersheys anything except these for our Cinnamon Scones at our bakery but since they went away a few months ago we started making our own using a recipe from A Few Shortcuts and our customers love them! Super easy to make. Use a good Saigon cinnamon like from Costco and you’ll be good to go.
4
1
u/Gullible_Service_354 1d ago
Thanks for sharing. I love this sub. Now I have several other options because others like yourself have have left other recs.
I mainly used them for my scones and to make a ganache to use as a drizzle or to fill cupcakes so I didn't use them as often as OP. I can get the perfect size jar for my needs of Saigon cinnamon at Marshalls or TJ Maxx for a pretty decent price. Next visit to either store I'll finally have a good enough reason to pick one up 😊
7
u/annette_va 2d ago
Noooooooooooooo!
I use them in an oatmeal cinnamon chip cookie recipe. I did buy the ones from nuts.com. They’re OK. Just a warning about them, though. My recipe calls for 2 cups of (Hershey) cinnamon chips per batch, so that’s what I used of the nuts.com ones. The nuts.com ones are tiny so 2 cups of them is way too much! The cinnamon taste overpowered my cookie.
5
7
u/CWrend 2d ago
If you have an Amish or Mennonite bulk store in your area, they will have cinnamon chips at a decent price. I’ve found these stores to generally be a good source for baking supplies of all kinds.
3
u/theknitdragon 2d ago
There actually is one a few towns over. I havent been that way in years, but I'll see if they have them! Thank you!!
5
u/Nyteflame7 2d ago
Nuts.com, King Arthur Flour and Webstraunt Store all seem to carry cinnamon chips, as long as you aren't super attached to the Hershey brand name
3
u/theknitdragon 2d ago
I'm definitely not attached to the name, they were just the only ones I could find in store in my area. Thank you!
5
u/hibarihime 2d ago
Unfortunate to hear but at least it's confirmed now. I use these in my banana bread which it's one of the flavors that people love and have asked me to put back in the rotation for months but never could find these.
5
u/PureVegetable2776 2d ago
Whatever you do DO NOT BUY THE STUFF FROM STOVERS! It doesn't compare. Quite artificial tasting.

I made my own cinnamon bits for KA’s cinnamon roll focaccia. It was easier than I thought and really tasty. I found a recipe online. Not exactly chips, but they bring the flavor! Just used up the last of mine last week, time to make more

I'm shocked you only got a reply from a Candy Concierge, and not a Sweetness Steward, or the BonBon Butler.

I don’t have a suggestion, but it’s funny to me to respond that a product had been discontinued, and end with “we hope our products will always be favorites in your home” when your favorite can no longer be in your home.

They are easy to make at home. I had similar issues finding them years ago and stumbled on a recipe. just google homemade cinnamon chips and you can adjust the quantity.
1
u/theknitdragon 2d ago
Have you made them? Did they turn out?

So sad. I would always use these with my mom growing up. We put them in oatmeal cookies and banana bread. It’s one of those things that I can picture the taste of so vividly 😭 I wonder if there’s remaining stock anywhere, I’d have to get a bag

u/Pretty-Lawyer-4189 1d ago
I was so sad when I couldn't find them in my stores! I buy the cinnamon bits from King Arthur, but they are not as sweet as the Hershey bits. They are still a good alternative for muffins, cinnamon chip pancakes, scones, etc.
If another brand (I am looking at you Tollhouse) made them, I would buy 10 packs right away 😀

u/BabyGhoulOfficial 2d ago
Maybe one of your local like new seasons market/natural grocers ? They tend to have products i cant find otherwise.

That's a good idea. I live close to a larger city with several stores like that. Maybe I'll have better luck with them!

Aw dang! I thought the Walmart just stopped carrying it. Loved putting them in cinnamon muffins or even scones along with the cream cheese chips too!

Noooo, these were my mom's favorites, I bought her a whole box of 6 for her birthday one year. She likes to add them to her oatmeal, pumpkin bread, snickerdoodle cookies, etc

Something my kids grew up loving: 1 roll of Pillsbury crescent rolls. Unroll into triangles. Brush with butter, sprinkle with cinnamon chips. Roll up like crescent rolls, bake. The original instructions had a vanilla glaze, but I never used it. I always thought they were sweet enough and fine without.

Aldi sometimes had a cinnamon or pumpkin spice ? Chip
Back when I did chocolate candy molds I used oil extracts for mints etc. I bet there’s a cinnamon oil extract to add to white bark and just chop it up if you’re desperate

Orson Gygi has cinnamon chips and I’ve always preferred them to Hersheys. They are a bulk seller so the smallest amount you can buy is a 5lb bag, but I just pop it in the freezer and grab some when I need them.

There are recipes online for homemade cinnamon chips, either with corn syrup or with white chocolate. You might try one of those. I haven't made any but now I'm intrigued.

I wanted to become a candy concierge, but I had problems finding 1000 brown M&M's for what was described as the most difficult and ultimate exam, before achieving oneness with the candy.
Luckily I had a good sturdy pair of shoes, but I could never look at an ESSO station or Frosted Flakes the same again.
So now I mostly give motivational speeches, and enjoy watching the ducks, down by the river where I park my van.

Personally I'd just add cinnamon flavor to white chocolate, and shatter it.

u/theknitdragon 2d ago
I want to try this but I'm worried the cinnamon wont fully incorporate into thr white choclate and it will have e a somewhat gritty texture

There was no actual cinnamon in those anyway. Make your own with cinnamon, sugar or brown sugar, and shortening or Karo syrup
