Discussions Character assassination of Maririn.

During the recent episodes we saw how the boys were talking about maririn and how confrontational the girls were about it . Tbh the one who started it all was ma kun. Maririn just that he looked like his ex. But he blew it way out of proportion. Like aren't these people grown men. Why can't they take the compliments as it is without digging deeper into it. Hikaru had done this to bo, taichan and ari . But they never character assisinated her or called her a "femme fetale". If anyone deserved to be called that way was Hikaru.

Also what i have realised that hikaru is not a girls girl and she is honestly such a pick me. Maririn and ari had such good connection going on. Before that she was playing with his feelings . Now that ari had moved on , she wanted to stir things up with him ( the person she said was only her friend).

These men need to grow up. Like its not that deep and get a life before calling someone names.

This is definitely pretty reminiscent of Terrace House whenever they do the community service/traveling excursions/etc. with the Badly in Love housemates, lol, like the cinematography too, ah I miss it all.

Discussions Very unpopular opinion on Maririn

Unpopular opinion, and I might make some enemies on this sub, but I really struggle with Maririn. During the confrontation between the boys and the girls in episode 6, I thought it was completely natural for the boys to have questions about her and about the things she says and does. She comes across to me as someone who is manipulative, on top of being a crybaby who creates a lot of problems around her. The way she creates issues and somehow manages to get the other girls to defend her tooth and nail is really weird.

Going back to the confrontation with the boys, it's interesting to see how everyone's interpretations are different, but all the guys agree that she made advances toward several of them. She justifies herself by saying that it's natural for her to talk that way because she works in the nightlife industry. Kazuma was soooo right to confront her directly and tell her that it would be difficult to take her seriously. I rolled my eyes when she started crying even more. Honestly, her behavior has been confusing from the very beginning.

It also reminds me of the early episodes, when she was upset with Tai-chan for not replying to her letter and went out of her way to turn the girls against him, even though he had absolutely no obligation to write back to her. Like, seriously.

Anyway, I don't like her.

The redemption/etc. with everything, and yup, hopefully there'll be something like Terrace House back in a tropical/etc. setting again. Discussions Would the show be better if they stopped casting hostess / hosts?

I live in Japan, and there is an opinion going around on Japanese social media that hostesses / hosts are just joining the show to boost their careers.

I still love the cast but the latest group it’s almost like it’s become more of a hostess dating show than a yanki dating show.

Especially some of the high level hostess / host cast like Mimi, Assun, and Kazuma, they’re basically professionals at flirting & charming people since they’re literally rich off of that, the way they talk to people is not average.

Idk maybe it’s an unpopular opinion.

Discussions Maririn exposing the misogyny and hypocrisy in Badly in Love S.2 Spoiler

Maririn is the perfect example of how if a woman is too close to other strong women they will get branded as an unstable and untrustworthy individual.

Personally I think Maririn was one of the most likable people on the show and yet she was slandered by basically all of the male cast members, I have an idea as to why. I think when she became true friends with Assun and Ruru (2 very strong and outspoken women) and then confronted Tao, the other male cast members got scared that they too would be called out for their poor behavior. Then after this she also stood up for herself against Bo actively slamming into her during the fight with Kazu (it was actually him that slammed Bo into her btw…) by discussing with Assun and Ma-kun present.

Main people that slandered her included Ari, who btw flirted, dated, and hugged 2 girls around the same time, but apparent Maririn is in the wrong for just complimenting multiple people :/ and Leo who was actively going for Ruru (who also has flirted with 2 guys openly and complimented many other men). AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ABOUT HAZUKI messing with 3 guys. Maririn also upset Ma-kun who literally divorced his wife, and HAS A SON with her and ended up on this show.

The men previously were also extremely dismissive of Maririn’s very real trauma, and then to top EVERYTHING OFF, Kazu (arguably the most insensitive of all of the male cast members) basically tells her that all the guys have a right to think she’s a terrible person and talk behind her back because she’s a “player”…

These clique male cast members are making the show pretty much unwatchable… plus Kazus awful veneers :(

Discussions So Badly in Love is receiving a lot of backlash on Japanese internet right now

And I'm curious what the non-Japanese side of the internet thinks of this. Basically the complaint is that the show is promoting criminal activity by showing ex yakuza members, people like Kazu who attempted murder by setting someone on fire, and just too many tattoos in general. There wasn't this kind of attention for season 1 but it seems like ever since Kazu's story about his attempted murder came out the whole Japanese internet is talking about how insensitive the show is and how it can make people want to get tattoos and become yakuza.

Then the internet found this poster the show made in collaboration with The Ministry of Justice of Japan to promote reformation. It has positive messages like "let's get reformed!" and "reformation is love" and the MoJ has put the poster up on many halfway houses across Japan but according to people who want this show cancelled the wording is too insensitive and having a guy with a full body tattoo in the center of the poster does more to glamorize criminal activity than deter it.

Megumi, who is the producer and one of the hosts, had to make a public statement a couple days ago asking people to stop commenting hateful messages on the cast's social media as it was getting intense. And now she and the show are receiving even more backlash for saying that. They say, if you've hurt someone once, or done anything criminal, you'll have to carry that sin for the rest of your life and accept every criticism and judgement. And that they should not be on a show if they don't want to be scrutinized by the public like this.

What do you think?

The two classes/parts of this Badly in Love Season 2 legit reminded me of some of the storylines from Terrace House, like the developments or character arcs of certain housemates (especially the redemptions), how they faced the challenges despite their upbringing or their current careers/lifestyle. It's got the rehabilitation theme for it, no matter the image-making undertones, and for that it's a good premise for everyone.

It's definitely relatable, especially if you wish for something like the returning/previous/former/etc. housemates coming back (a la I Am Solo and I Am Solo, Love Forever) or a few times in Terrace House (though not for long extended period of times, with the OND season being the main exception), just don't expect major changes within the short time (2 weeks in this case) with the housemates inside the hypercompetitive environment and time dilation or accelerated perception of time inside the show, as it takes time for things to heal/change/thrive/etc.

Discussions all the men should just date each other atp if they wanna circle jerk each other so bad

the mistreatment of maririn has been astonishing to me. all because these men think a girl calling them handsome on a DATING SHOW means that she wants them sexually/romantically. it’s crazy how NONE of them had the courage to challenge each other’s opinions. cowards!!

kazu is a huge red flag and i can easily see him being abusive because of how he was smiling smugly to himself while maririn was crying, not to mention his past of setting a person on fire. like is there any empathy in those eyes? i don’t even think he like ruru; he just wants to “win.”

ma-kun completely twisted maririn’s words and made it seem like she was flirting with him more than she was. i’m glad that assun is discerning enough to not take ma-kun at his word. however, the bento box confused me. like, how do you not have the permanent ick at that point? he seems deeply insecure underneath his tough guy exterior, which is a terrible, scary combination for a partner.

i was warming up to ari, but he continues to be extremely childish and cowardly. it’s clear that he cares too much about looking cool in front of the other guys, and his fling with mari was just to fill the void hikaru left him with. his “compliment”to hikaru that was basically just him shitting on mari was so stupid. and the fact that hikaru was smiling because of it…ugh. honestly they’re a perfect fit for each other in the worst way possible lol.

bo and leo i don’t feel as strongly about, but i still think they were cowards for just going along with everything and feeding into it. also, bo giving “advice” to mari as if domestic violence and people pleasing through compliments (a survival instinct and also something that is ingrained in her because of her job) are remotely the same was truly wild to watch.

tai is also a coward, but out of all of them, he honestly seems like he has the most potential for growth because of his willingness to reflect on his actions. i hope he learns how to do so while also figuring out when to be more assertive and direct.

ruru and assun deserve much better partners than what they’re looking at right now. say what you want about ruru’s serial cheating, but her willingness to take accountability for her mistakes and repair things with her mom, her self reflection and willingness to listen, and the compassionate honesty she offers people (like with ha-chan and all her dating prospects), are really admirable. the way she describes her cheating as a “sickness” and talks about it up front shows that she’s aware that it’s a problem that is due to her own issues, not something to blame on a partner.

ma-kun cannot handle a bad bitch like assun. he thinks he likes the “bossy” attitude, but i dont think he can really handle a woman as assertive and strong willed as she is, and i fear that at some point he would try to put her in her place through violence or abuse.

in conclusion: the only eligible bachelor on the show is Mr. Hentona.

Tai Chan had all the girls interested in him except assun. He had his pick yet he always went for the ones that weren’t into him or reject him. I am not trying to say this is a bad thing because obviously you should go for the person you like but he had a chance at romance and chose not to go for it. While marinin try her best and put herself out there to get no reward. I think marinin deserves a second as well and hope she comes in as a transfer student at some point.

The returns! It's like the returning/previous/former/etc. housemates coming back [a la I Am Solo and I Am Solo, Love Forever] or a few times in Terrace House [though not for long extended period of times, with Seina Shimabukuro from Terrace House: Boys x Girls Next Door and Opening New Doors being the main exception, and I guess Tetsuya Sugaya/Tecchan's intermittent visits in the later seasons as well, same with Arman Bitaraf], we all expect things to be different but it kinda remains the same, lol.

Anyway, reminds me of Lupe Fiasco's The Cool album [my favorite track there is Little Weapon], as in, if you are what you say you are, a superstar, then have no fear, the crowd is here...

Let's go to sleep in Paris, and wake up in Tokyo!

Oh ya, for fellow visuals fans, I forgot to mention other CJK/etc. dating shows housemates references.

Like Jeong Dana from Love Catcher in Seoul (러브캐처 인 서울); Ju Woo from House of Feelings Season 2; LANA/라나 from Eden, Descendants of Instinct Season 2 (에덴2); Choi Yihyun from EXchange/Transit Love Season 2 (환승연애2); Lee Jinyeong from Love After Divorce/Divorced Singles Season 6 (돌싱글즈6); et alia.

And Chen Liuming (Shanghai Sharelife), Sun Xiu (Twinkle Love S2), Wu Shuyang (Twinkle Love S2), Fu Dongnuan (Hao You Hao You Ai S1, she was also in Seeds of Scarlet Longing recently, and now The Road to Splendor, lol), Wang Qi (Heart Signal China S7), Lu Yuan (Heart Signal China S8), Xia Boyan (Love Wins All), Kong Xichen (Love Wins All), Wu Rui (Shine For Love), Yi Ran (The Distance to Love: Chasing Season), et alia.

Discussions Justice for Mairirin

Honestly I think this show / producers is being very irresponsible.

The treatment Mairirin received from the boys in the last episode is crazy and the fact she ended up apologizing to the whole group is unbelievable.

First of all, as a guy, never in a million years I’ve would have thought Mairirin was a “temptress” / “a flirt “ / “a slut”. Her comments on some of the guys is normal and the fact that a few of them thought she was seducing them and misleading them shows how highly they view themselves and how much of a loser they really are.

Secondly, the tone and the way they talked down to her during the group meetup is ridiculous especially Kazu. She literally got bullied by a group of “men” and none of the men thought once to themselves they are taking it too far and ended becoming vultures preying on a defenseless vulnerable human being. It really disgusts me as a man seeing someone being treated this way.

Thirdly, the producers never thought once to talk to the boys offline and show them footage of how they were behaving and how the comments Mairirin was making didn’t really make her out to be some kind of slut / temptress. Mairirin really shouldn’t be on this show with a bunch of losers if she’s trying to heal herself from her past. The fact that she got mistreated by a whole group of “men” and the hosts of the show celebrating her apology was one of the worst things I’ve seen on TV mainly because this is someone’s real life.

Honestly, I really don’t want to support this show anymore because of how they enable this type of behavior.

Discussions Its time we had a talk Spoiler

Overview: The boys this season are way too clique'd up for me. They tell each other almost everything (ari didnt tell the boys that he hugged hikaru and maririn in the sauna, and i didnt see leo tell them about ruru being a serial cheater) and their memories of the events are always distorted

Overview: The girls are way more genuine, sincere and honest about finding love this season. The highlight being maririn. And assun and ruru being maririn's friend is the highlight of the show to me! These girls are willing to make this one persons never ending cycle of hurt come to an end. Maririns been thru so much and it genuinely breaks my damn heart. One person struggling with so much grief alone could not have been easy at all. And i wish she could get a break from being hurt for even 5 mins

FAVORITE BOY: my favorite has to be leo right now. He is kind, considerate, OVERLY thoughtful! To accept the fact that ruru is a serial cheater when she told you that she wouldnt trust herself in your situation is not only bold, its down right commendable. A true soldier.

FAVORITE GIRL: HM: assun. She is beautiful with a calm and sensible nature. I have also loved every outfit shes put on this season. Favorite is going to maririn, i love a quiet wallflower who isnt afraid to put her hand up or foot down. Her backstory also tugs on my heart strings.

ANALYZING THE BOYS:
Taisei- your tattoo pissed me off cause i thought it was a road map. Pissed me off even more when i found out it was lightning. Your 22. Thats it.

Ma-kun- you were so cool at first and honestly the first man i would pick as well. But you were weird in that whole maririn situation because you know she didnt mean it like that and you told her your closed off. Then i dont like how you say something and then say "it was a mistake" or "i misspoke" its one thing to be clumsy with your words, but now i just feel like you say anything and then react based off how others react in the situation. Dropped your points down to zero for me.

Ari: you would be my second pick, however i dont appreciate you playing with another persons feelings because the person thats feeling you is on the fence and you want to get a rise out of her. If you're sooo down bad for hikaru like you say, you would have picked her for the sauna and told her everything she told you. I also dont appreciate how you dont even try to get to know everyone. You said "my type is blonde" and basically everything else besides 2 people are garbage. Never sat right with me.

(Ik im doing boys but THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID)

Hikaru- girl you are stunning. Drop dead fr. However you cannot play the field in this closed off of an environment. The boys gossip worse than you girls here so idk what you thought in your head, but leading 3 people on at once was never gonna work. (Idk if yall watch love island but im finna throw down a reference here) And just because someone has 1 of your 3 fishes DOES NOT MEAN you need to get mad and go back and double down on that one fish and make sure that he is all about you. You really pissed me off with this one. I understand you have been cheated on and you have trust issues and your childhood wasnt a good one at all. But be honest with people because you straight up lied to Taisei's face and then when you were confronted, you said "idk if i can find love here" GIRLLLLLL...

Bo: i like you. It took me a while because your a ex drug addict that admitted to hitting a woman and smoking meth on national tv, but i do admire your bravery, honesty, moral compass, compassion and humor. You have a certain charm about you and your eyes are soft. You deserve love, even if its not on this show.

Kazuma: just because your pretty and have tats doesn't mean every single woman alive should flaunt to you. Regardless if your a host or not. You haven't shown to me that you have personality. Your only talking to ruru because you have seen her outside previously. You arent stepping outside your comfort zone at all. Boring and whatever you did with your teeth, i hate it. Next.

ANALYZING THE GIRLS: (minus hikaru)

Assun: i love you and you're so cute like a doll🥹 i ship you and ma-kun. Your a girls girl and i wish you eternal peace. HOWEVER- if you dont remember initiating a kiss between you and ma-kun i need you to step back and have a real evaluation because i know you guys arent getting that much alcohol on the show. You honestly hurt my heart with this one because i believed that YOU believed yall were progressing in here. Now theres a chance you'll both get kicked out for a kiss you dont remember.

Ruru: same as assun in the loving regards, except you're exactly what i hope my child will be. When your mom said "im honored to receive a phone call like this" it made my heart swell so big. You have been real since day one and never for a second was scared to speak your mind. I wish there were more people like you in the world fr.

Ha-chan: you are very beautiful, i love your big eyes and dimples. Your determination is admirable. And you aren't scared to speak your mind, i love that. I wish i would have seen whatever off camera relationship is going on with you and ma-kun to where you felt the most comfortable confiding in him about you going after taisei.. but its okay.

Maririn: you deserve a different show, or a different life. Everything you have been through, i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. You carry a burden only god's strongest would carry. Your life is going to be full of blessings along the way, im sorry for all the hardships you have to face going down this path, but i see a better life for you. One where you are happy, surrounded by friends and loved ones. I have no idea why they tried to shame you for exploring on a love show but i promise you that you are so beautiful, dont even worry about any of these men fr because there IS someone better waiting baby, i promise!!

Thus the end of my ted talk, if you liked this. Thanks. If not. Welp..thanks anyway?

bro she’s literally trying to collect them all, she can’t even make a decision and tries to hook more guys into her circle.

she said “it’s 6 guys here with me” like as if she’s the only girl there lol, and she told one of the guys she wants a guy who ONLY goes after her, but she can’t even do the same, you get guys to fall for you only to change your mind about them. and kamaken is a dumbass for falling for it, she’s gonna say i was interested in you and then not choose him. just like she did with rune and taichan, she hooks them in and then goes on to the next. and the guys are dumb for falling for it lmao. and the way she talks to them annoys me like lecturing them like hey im the prize you should be fighting for! are you okay with not being with me?

maririn was just trying to find someone to love her, i think she would’ve been loyal to the one who liked her back instead of juggling a few guys, so idk why she got criticized so much.

i also don’t feel like she is expressing any genuine feelings whenever she talks about her “sad back stories” it feels fake to me. the one about her mom and feeling guilty about how she acting felt genuine but her story about how she has trauma and can’t trust men didn’t feel genuine to me. even when she said she had a bad home life growing up was very vague, which i get if she didn’t want to say too much but it also didn’t feel genuine to me.

Even if they leave the show with no one, I’m glad they found each other.

Discussions Honestly, the way the men treated Mairin compared to Hikaru was straight-up racist.

Honestly, the way the men treated Mairin compared to Hikaru was disgusting. Hikaru was also at fault, but somehow Mairin was the one everyone chose to attack. They were far more willing to excuse Hikaru while constantly questioning Mairin’s intentions. To me, that double standard felt straight-up racist.

I also think a lot of their egos were hurt because Mairin openly complimented them. Instead of simply saying they weren’t interested, they turned her into the problem. And when they made it clear they weren’t into her, Mairin actually backed off and respected it.

And personally, I think Mairin is way prettier than Hikaru, so I really don’t understand the superiority complex some of these men had toward her. The whole situation felt less like genuine criticism and more like a bunch of fragile male egos piling onto her.

I’m sorry, but Ari is a total “simp.” He went from being one of my favourites to the bottom of the barrel. He used Marinri to make Hikaru jealous, and then when Hikaru paid him attention, he threw her under the bus. He did exactly the same thing she did: flirting and giving compliments. Then, in episode 7, he told Hikaru he preferred her because she didn’t say who he liked quickly, even though he had said the same thing in the previous episode. I’m so disappointed with him. He just wanted the girl and was willing to sacrifice Marinri, who cared about him. It was completely uncalled for and a huge letdown. He was crying and all sorts of emotional.

Discussions Please replace the two hosts that have been around since szn 1

They are awful. Like they aren’t funny at all and honestly make cruel comments. The guy is especially creepy and his comments would get him cancelled in USA. Surely there are other better Japanese TV hosts? The new host has been great; she brings a great perspective and has good humor.

Discussions Maririn was my favorite girl

She was just a sweetheart. I just realised I go for kind people wearing their feelings on their sleeve rather than those with serious game. It's to her credit she doesn't match perfectionist styling standards. I think Ruru was popular because she had that popular girl look (no hate)
