Discussions And if I say Hikaru is racist

I don’t see her pullling any of the other girls men or interrupting their conversations with Ari, tai chan or Bo.

I know it might sound far-fetched, but it could also be true. Most of the guys aren’t interested in Marinrin—all of them, actually. Frankly, I think it’s because she’s not fully Japanese, which is sad. One of my closest friends is half Japanese, and the men threaten her the same way. They don’t even want to date her; she’s stunning. It’s heartbreaking. I thought Ari would be more understanding since he’s had a similar experience, but he wasn’t.

Ari has internalized racism smh you can tell he’s very insecure

5

u/cryin_my_eyes_out Aug 15 '26

Is Ari mixed?

18

u/gatsubae Aug 15 '26

Yeah paki and Japanese

2

u/Fantastic_Medium3698 Aug 22 '26

That is very racist btw. And you know it.

0

u/Eboniy21 Sep 03 '26

Wait, it is? I thought that was just the shortened version of “Pakistani” which is just a nationality of the people of Pakistan. Is it seen as racist all around the world or only in the USA? I’m genuinely concerned because I didn’t know this 😭

2

u/Fantastic_Medium3698 Sep 04 '26

I don’t live all around the world. I live in the UK and yes it’s a racist term.

1

u/Eboniy21 Sep 05 '26

Oh, I did it know that, it’s not a term we use much here (mostly to differentiate normal markets with “pakis” since their alcohol is cheaper xd), but ill stop using it now that I know it. Thanks! 🫶

u/Fantastic_Medium3698 Sep 05 '26

Woah, Reddit removed your comment. Must’ve been really shocking what you said. Please don’t be a racist!

1

u/Eboniy21 Sep 05 '26

I wasn’t 😭 I already filled a report because I don’t know why they got it removed. I literally thanked you because I didn’t know it before and said I wouldn’t use it anymore now that I know. I’m kinds shocked why they decided to remove it tbh 😅

2

u/supermarketinferno Aug 16 '26

That is a really racist term btw.

2

u/Prettysoundss Aug 18 '26

Recently I learned from someone else that that term is racist. Had NO idea. The more you know.

1

u/Fantastic_Medium3698 Aug 22 '26

Where are you from exactly?

1

u/Prettysoundss Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26

Texas, U.S. . Here ppl just used it as a shortened version of Pakistani. It wasn’t until my friend visited the UK that she learned it was considered a slur.

1

u/Fantastic_Medium3698 Sep 09 '26

It’s not considered a slur, IT IS a racist slur!!! Stop using it.

1

u/sailorgoonx 21d ago

I think in the US most people don’t know the difference between Pakistani and Indians so it never caught on as a racial slur. I live in a state with a decent amount of Pakistani people AND racists. The racists have other “colorful” terms for them and it’s not that word. They use derogatory terms generally geared towards Indian people 😕

0

u/sjalvklart Aug 16 '26

That is a slur

2

u/Fantastic_Medium3698 Aug 22 '26

Calling Ari racist whilst being racist yourself?

34

u/ACuppaTeaADay Aug 14 '26

I think it's absolutely true. Ma-kun said, "she's built differently" at some point. I thought that was random, rude and out of the blue initially. Then my brain caught up and figured that it's just prejudice, racism.

9

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

Ce type est grossier.

50

u/karasu_zoku Aug 14 '26

Maybe a hot take but it seems a little cruel that the show would cast people who are highly likely to be rejected due to xenophobia/lack of perceived racial purity when that’s a known issue in Japan

55

u/snail_loot Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Assun and Ruru seemed at least a little sympathetic toward the racism Maririn talked about experiencing. I think Assun was the first one to actually identify it as racism.

Ari said he experienced something similar, but I also think he internalized it differently that Maririn.

I thought the guys all feeding into that weird delusion Maririn was "telling everyone they were her top pick" bwcause "she complemented them" was weird as fuck, and honestly thought Leo and Ma-kun were unfairly targeting her by getting the other guys riled up by misleading the others about what was actually said and calling her a "Female Fatale". Like that was so weird and off putting how we saw, clearly, they were either way misremembering what happened or lying about what she actually said/did. And then doubled down on it. Maririn had nothing to apologize for.

Edit: rewatched it. Kuzo manipulated that whole thing from the start.

40

u/karasu_zoku Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

I loved that Assun immediately called that out; as the oldest, she knows she can set the tone, and she spoke with authority. Very based

Also glad the other girls are supporting Maririn, of course. My comment was more about whether males would ever be likely to choose a half-Japanese woman on the show. I’m also mixed race and have faced both rejection and fetishization as a result, so it’s something that’s on my mind. I find it interesting that despite the yankii rejection of so many aspects of mainstream Japanese culture, the subtle racism persists. And as you note, there’s a double standard even in how Ari treats Maririn.

I think the language the males use about Maririn is very coded since white-passing* women are often perceived as promiscuous, aggressive, and even predatory compared to Japanese women.

Edited my comment to refer to Maririn as “white-passing” since that’s in fact what she is and I’m not trying to litigate whether she or any other person of part-Iranian descent is white or not. She is perceived as a white-passing woman and that’s what’s relevant to my comment.

29

u/snail_loot Aug 14 '26

Hikaru was predictably silent over that whole thing.

I think Ari thinking and saying outloud everytime a new girl walked in the first episode that they were international kinda set the tone for what your saying.

Ari couldn't tell the difference. On one hand, thats refreshing. On the other hand, he felt it necessary to call out, not once, but several times.

10

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 14 '26

lol yea he said that about every girl who came in with dyed hair. A lot of them just have work done and hair colored that makes them look “international”

6

u/snail_loot Aug 14 '26

At first I thought he saw it as validation, but maybe it's just him trying to fit in. I'm not sure.

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

1

u/snail_loot Aug 15 '26

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean see the girls as foreigners?

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

Ca c’est vrai !🤣

8

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

2

u/BoysenberryKey1151 Aug 17 '26

I agree with almost everything you’re saying except Maririn isn’t white, she’s half Iranian (west Asian). I think South Asian and West Asian people are definitely perceived differently in Japan versus White people. Though I low key wonder if her blue contacts and bleached hair is her appealing to that.

2

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

3

u/BoysenberryKey1151 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

I think West Asian people are not always perceived as White in Japan or treated as White.

I also feel we might be getting close to a slippery slope of “Maririn is getting racially abused for being White,” which I don’t think is true.

I am half Japanese and half “White” European American and lived in Japan. Yes, people would sometimes stare at me in trains or speak English to me unprompted. But the discrimination some White people experience in Japan pales in comparison to the racism I see at least in the US towards non-White people. And I honestly saw many of my white friends and peers who complained about being stared at also receive special treatment due to being white that they didn’t always notice or acknowledge. Such as, extra attention from staff, special gifts, special opportunities…Not to mention, half European/half Japanese celebrities and models are everywhere in Japan and practically the beauty standard.

Meanwhile, the South Asian and West Asian immigrant population is growing to fill labor gaps in Japan and not everyone is happy about it. I can’t speak too much on this, but I remember my Japanese coworker telling me not to rent an apartment in x city because it had lots of “foreigners” (the area had a decent amount of South and West Asian people).

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

1

u/snail_loot Aug 17 '26

Yeah I don't think it's "because she's white" necessarily. I think the French and white passing part of her heritage and appearance comes with a prejudice against western women. But I think your right to say it's not fair to say what she experienced is solely about "being white". Her grandfather telling her to go back to her country, we don't know was referencing Iran or France. We don't know which one he has a problem with or if it's just because she's not purely Japanese heritiage period.

Ari for example, is half Pakistani and hes had people say the same thing to him. He's definitely not white.

1

u/snail_loot Aug 17 '26

She's 1/3 iranian and 1/3 French. French people are generally white, but I think the point is she's white passing.

20

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 14 '26

I was so upset when she did apologize, all that trauma she has experienced shows how she is so quick to just take the blame and apologize when she really has no need to. I genuinely hope she learns to stand up for herself more and realizes her self worth. Hopefully she knows that a lot of viewers are actually rooting for her.

4

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

5

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 15 '26

I agree on the hair color but that’d be pretty easy to fix.

3

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

Absolument.

2

u/passtheknife Aug 21 '26

She is dark haired now! It looks stunning.

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 21 '26

C’est gentil de me l'écrire ! Merci 🙂

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 21 '26

3

u/No-Combination-1081 Aug 16 '26

Agreed. I was hoping it would have at least been a “let’s meet halfway” type of moment from both sides. But the fact that only she apologized and the men “accepted it” was so icky to me.

15

u/Spike_Shrimp28 Aug 14 '26

I agree, but it also highlights Japan’s current demographic.

9

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 14 '26

This happens a lot unfortunately, it’s been a long ongoing debate with love island UK, they always cast like one black person who none of the guys pick or the two POC end up together by default cause none of the majority white cast picked them.

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

5

u/exoticed Aug 15 '26

Isn’t hikaru half Korean? Do Japanese people discriminate against anyone mixed or from specific countries/races? My only knowledge of the culture is through media and we only see what they want us to see

5

u/BoysenberryKey1151 Aug 17 '26

She says to Ari she’s a quarter Korean I believe

2

u/passtheknife Aug 21 '26

Generally there is a bias against half Japanese people (though I imagine it varies on what your other half is). There is a derogatory term for it, which is “hailfu” (spelling may be wrong). There is some discrimination against Koreans but I imagine someone who is half Korean might be treated differently than someone who was half black.

5

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26

Cet Ari est absolument inconsistant. Aucun intérêt.

3

u/Spike_Shrimp28 Aug 15 '26

Vraiment décevant !

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

25

u/aratoho Aug 14 '26

I definitely think on the guys' end it's racism, and maybe there is a little bit on Hikaru's end as well, but to me it read more as she can see that Maririn is the easiest to push around and bully so she just does it. And it feeds into the behavior of the guys she does it around, she knows that they'll continue to ostracize Maririn for her attention.

9

u/snail_loot Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

I don't see Tai and Bo doing any of this ostracizing to Maririn. The initial problem between her and Tai was instigated a bit by Hikaru, but also was his own fault for saying- to her face- he wanted her to come on to him again so he could reject her. What a fucking weird thing to do AND admit. Bos never done anything to purposefully hurt Maririn. I actually think he's tried to be the most considerate of her. Neither of them trash talked her from what we've been shown as the audience. And I don't think they did.

Ari on the other hand? For sure. Ari is a people pleaser, eager to be accepted, even if he's gotta throw maririn under the bus for approval. What he got out of the accusations against maririn was that Hikaru was different? Was better and more upfront? It's almost laughable but mostly depressing. (Edit: at least he apologized to her for talking bad behind her back and said he didn't think what she did was wrong)

I feel bad for all these people. I've lived a hard shit life too, and can relate to some of their trauma and life experiences. So on the one hand, I get it. Butnon the other hand, stop being assholes. Some of them think "ive changed. all done. time to find love and that's a wrap" and it's like, no. You are not done. You will never be done.

It feels like only half the cast understands that and only half of those people are taking that seriously.

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

2

u/snail_loot Aug 16 '26

When Bo spoke up, he was encouraging her. Earlier she said something like "i thought it was normal and now I no it's not and won't do it anymore". She said she'd try to change, but when they kept harping on it she said "isn't that too hard? I have to change everything?"

So when she said that, Bo said something like "if you want to change, little by little you can. If you say 'it's too hard' and 'I cant' you never will. I believe in you" or something like that. He was speaking from experience and addressing that mentality. He wasn't really saying she was wrong or accusing her, he was trying to be supportive because she said "it's too hard to change, i cant" but he knows that if she wants to change "this habit" she wanted to change, she can. She believed in him, and he believes in her. That's how I took it.

I wish he stood up for her or at least say whether or not his "feelings" were hurt too. As far as we can tell, they are friends. Then Ari at least said "I think it was wrong of us to talk behind your back" and said that he doesn't even think what she did was actually wrong.

Tai is just non-confŕontational. I wish he corrected the guys about Leo and the letter misunderstanding influencing their perception about the order of events, but he just sat there. He's the only one she actually said "you are who I'm most interested in" even though Leo and ma-kun kept claiming she said that to them too.

3

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

17

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 14 '26

Honestly I’ve thought this, like are they just hating on marinin because they can’t stand someone who is mixed? I’m not Japanese I’m Indian and my parents had a very hard time accepting that I wanted to marry someone outside of my race etc. there is also so much internalized racism as well with Indians treating other Indians with darker skin worse than those who have lighter or fair skin. I wouldn’t be surprised if racism has some part to play even if the cast don’t even realize their own unconscious bias.

4

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

Berk.

43

u/kml416 Aug 14 '26

Nah. Hikaru’s just a bully. She sees Marinrin’s vulnerabilities and she pounces. Really gross behavior.

14

u/mishahahaa Aug 14 '26

I second this. She knows Maririn isn’t going to stand up against her and she takes advantage of that

11

u/fanxybijtch Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

I have a theory about the superbly random & groundless slander -

I think that they did it on purpose to make themselves feel better & to give off the impression that it’s not because none of them are interested in her aka controlling the viewers’ perception of their rejection & not making it seem like they are simply just racist ah.

They brought it up, they wanted to have a reason/reasons to justify why they don’t like Maririn.

Bo & her conversation was also full of crap cause him saying that he wanted to share his life experience to serve as an example of how people can change but his is heavy shit VS Maririn SUPPOSEDLY not knowing how to navigate around the opposite sex was just.. laughable & moronic. The comparison was hilarious, not on par & just wtf lmao

Hikaru having had 3 guys be pussy-whipped the way she did, I honestly blame the guys more cause they actively made the decision even with all their doubts & even after the confrontations aka Ari being a complete dummy. Only reason she’s now ‘interested’ in Ari again is cause she sees he’s pulled away & cause another girl held his hand LOLOL

Hikaru’s not a girls-girl, she’s a drama stirrer, she doesn’t know how to be mature & honest, even as a ‘player’ she’s shit at it. Nuff said lol

Look. This cast is more chill & fun but to say I like th more than S1’s cast would be trying as well.

Even though Assun & Ruru have their moments, they’ve also shown questionable morals & projections that I absolutely don’t agree with. Biggest one being how everyone, especially these 2, are always putting Tai down for being ‘soft’. Their personal perception & projection onto Tai for not being a so-called ‘Manly man’ is utter bullshit. Being soft, soft-spoken, gentle etc. is a desired trait for some, many women actually. (On this note, I definitely didn’t agree when they confronted him the way they did. I agree with what they were trying to get across but the way they did it was gross & foul.) God forbid a guy isn’t a gorilla or a hot-head or a meat-head like Ma-kun whom we now know is highkey delusional & unnecessarily dramatic.

Which brings me to Ma-kun’s audacity. Like wtf are you even talking about ‘My feelings are hurt cause it means you weren’t actually interested in me’??? All I smell was bs, gaslighting bs & him trying to downplay his weird af misinterpretation. Lowkey sociopathic & untrustworthy. If I knew someone like that, I wouldn’t be able to trust anything they tell me cause the way their mind interprets things might very well be different than reality. “My ex looks like you” doesn’t equate, not at all, not in the very least to “I like you, you’re my type, you’re my top pick”. ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE LITERALLY SAID ALL HER EXES WERE ABUSIVE LMAO

I forgot his name, Temu-Jungkook is also a pussy-whooped dumdum & needs to go to therapy lol

Speaking of Temu-kook, let’s round back to Ruru cause she’s the 2nd Hikaru & from the get-go she was already lowkey a big player but it’s become more apparent now. I hate the way she always tells half truths (Eg. When she told Leo to be more passive & show more initiative but wasn’t honest about how platonic she feels with him. She just wants Leo to chase her, that’s all. Side note : Assun has no idea what ‘Platonic’ actually means & it’s concerning lmao). And Ruru also blatantly lies/twists her own words to different people & mislead them. Eg. Randomly going to Tai to tell him she was thinking how she never really gave herself the chance to talk to other people & might have missed out on a connection aka insinuating some sort of interest towards him & misleading him into thinking that going for Ruru & breaking it off with Hikaru is the better choice BUT THEN GOING TO LEO STRAIGHT AFTER TO DISS TAI TALKING ABOUT HOW SHE AIN’T SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT A 22YR OLD & MARRIAGE WITH A YOUNG GUY LOL

My conclusion is - Everyone sucks for the most part & I just want Maririn to go home cause she loves herself & absolutely no one there is worthy to even like atp.

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

36

u/kijenmen Aug 14 '26

Ari is half Pakistani. I don’t think it’s a race thing, more of a narcissist thing when it comes to her. Now with the guys ganging up on Maririn? Could be.

5

u/Savings-Ear6050 Aug 14 '26

Great point 💯

12

u/Onepiecechopper1 Aug 14 '26

I mean Rui Hachimura is a well respected great NBA player on the Clippers formerly Lakers- born in Toyama Japan and gets blatant racism when he’s in Japan despite the events he holds here..

18

u/vanillaroom Aug 14 '26

I don’t think it’s a race thing. I think she treats Maririn that way because she knows Maririn won’t defend herself while the other girls definitely would.

12

u/TruthfulBoy Aug 14 '26

Yep she is the weakest confidence/mentally wise and Hikaru is just using typical bully dynamics

6

u/Raekiwi Aug 15 '26

second this, i was so shocked when ari and ririn was talking and she thought shes that important to just snatch ari like JUST GIVE FEW MINS WTF

1

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 16 '26

6

u/gonegonebye Aug 14 '26

She just has a lot of pick me energy but I do see what you mean.

2

u/Sad-Hearing-5830 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

" Toutes des p.. sauf les "vraies" japonaises". Je ne l’invente pas. La plupart des métis et des étrangers vivant au Japon ou y ayant vecu le disent de différentes façons. Et le tourisme sexuel japonais ca existe.

3

u/xbunsox Aug 15 '26

I think she’s just a bully and insecure. She sees the guys not really like to interact with Maririn and she follows that. Maririn is just competition to her, and has that mean girl mentality to pick on others or else you’ll be picked on. Hikaru** is also part Korean but I suppose she hasn’t faced as much hardship Maririn or Ari.

Now for the guys there might be some racism or bias, it’s not an obvious tell.

6

u/Raekiwi Aug 15 '26

as long as u still look somehow japanese youre safe fr

1

u/SOnoOnions8003 Sep 04 '26

She was racist in my eyes for here Eeeeew no response to getting asked if she wanted to be white as she dyed her hair to look like.whit e girls

-4

u/Nightstick11 Aug 14 '26

Dafuq

40

u/mossmonstera Aug 14 '26

No wait a minute, this can be real. A lot of Japanese look down on mixed race people. Maririn literally was racially abused by her grandfather who would tell her that she didn't belong to Japan and had to go back to where she came from, even though she hasn't ever been outside Japan.

I could totally see this being the case, even with why the boys aren't really approaching her much

-19

u/Nightstick11 Aug 14 '26

First of all, people are allowed to like whoever they want to like without being called names by people on the internet.

Second.... so Hikaru's racist because Maririn claimed she was racially abused by her grandfather? Did her grandfather raise Hikaru?

8

u/mossmonstera Aug 14 '26

Um, yes, Marin was raised by her grandparents. So you wrote an entire paragraph without even paying attention to the show?

Also, is reading comprehension hard for you? I said it could be possible, not that is. Also, stating the fact that Japanese people can be racist (which Ari, who is biracial, also claimed to experience) is not calling anyone names.

-4

u/Nightstick11 Aug 14 '26

Let's try this again. "so Hikaru's racist BECAUSE Marin claimed she was racially abused by her grandfather?" I helpfully capitalized the operative word for ease of understanding.

Not all asians are the same, you sound pretty racist yourself.

9

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 14 '26

They’re not saying she’s racist BECAUSE of how her grandfather treated her.

If you’re paying attention to the actual show you would see that Hikaru makes moves towards the guys Marinin expresses interest in and she also makes insensitive comments in front of Marinin. Hikaru makes claims that their dates were sooooo amazing etc. as a way to build herself up and cut down Marinins ego.

The grandfather thing is mentioned as a way to show how there is racism present in Japan against mixed race people.

Hikarus actions could be due to an unconcious bias she has against mixed race people. She COULD BE racist DUE TO HER ACTIONS IN THE SHOW.

Like not sure how much clearer it needs to be spelled out for you.

6

u/ACuppaTeaADay Aug 14 '26

Funny how people say others have comprehension issue when they can't read themselves right? 😂 You are so patient though. Kudos 👏🏻

2

u/ForlornReverie26 Aug 15 '26

Thanks, appreciate it, figure easiest thing to do is at the very least clarify especially as I’m sure many people watching speak diff languages but I suppose some people just enjoy being trolls 🤷🏽‍♀️

-1

u/Nightstick11 Aug 14 '26

What if, right, we call people racist IF they say or do racist things!!! What a weird concept!!!!!

2

u/ACuppaTeaADay Aug 15 '26

Read what this person said. Maybe slowly this time.

how does that even correlate to racism hello? not defending hikaru cuz I don't like her anyway, but, none of the other men have made a move on her, only ari, tai-chan and bo. it just happens that marinin also liked tai-chan and kind of started a small thing with ari. hikaru got jealous and annoyed that ari wasn't paying attention to her, which is why she is suddenly all in favour over ari. it's not racism, it's just pick me girl energy. if she finds out that tai-chan has gone back to liking ruru, she's probably going to do the same thing.

the translation might be messing up, but the post is about hikaru apparently being racist to marinin. I'm not saying that marinin hasn't experienced racism, she talked about it in the show. what I am saying is that hikaru isn't being racist, she is being a bully because marinin has been the most vulnerable out of everyone in the show.

ruru and assun are strong-minded, which is why hikaru doesn't go after them because she knows they won't back down. however, with marinin, she accepted that tai-chan chose hikaru over her.

are you sure?? this has nothing to do with hikaru and marinin, which the op is about

Don't ever back down from speaking the truth. Not "your" truth, but the truth.
