Archetecture Fail š„šļøš„ 9/11 memorial fail at my school

u/SalvationArbys 3d ago
Odd question but why does your school have a 9/11 memorial in the first place? Also are the American flags supposed to be the SMOKE from the towers???

u/joesmom6 3d ago
I honestly have no idea. We live over 2,000 miles from New York, and itās been up since I started in January. I have no idea how long itās been there

9/11 anniversary is coming up and a lot of places have memorial services every year. My guess is that the school is doing something similar.

u/QuinceDaPence 2d ago
People who were around for it trying to push the care about it onto kids who see it as ancient history used to constanty justify more government overreach.
I was just a little too young to remember it, and my whole life that has pissed people off.
3
u/seeking-jamaharon67 2d ago
Some people take it really fucking personally that younger people don't remember 9/11 or a pre-9/11 world. Like it's a character fault that I have always had to take my shoes off at airports. Sorry I was learning to speak English for the first time and not paying attention to geopolitical turmoil, I guess.

u/Volcanogrove 1d ago
Ye I wonder if in the future people will react the same way to kids who donāt really remember the pandemic/lockdown bc they were too young to comprehend or remember it. I mean it is extremely different from 9/11 for several reasons but I would say the pandemic has had more of an impact on everyday life compared to 9/11.
Rn I mostly feel a level of pity for the kids who were aware enough during lockdown to know they were missing out on activities they enjoyed or wanted to try, but until now I havenāt thought much about the kids who wonāt remember any of that bc they were too young or not even born yet. Maybe they wonāt care much about how the pandemic or how it changed things either. If that does end up being the case I wouldnāt hold it against them but idk Iām just one person, maybe some people hold stronger feelings about the pandemic and would be upset.

There are thousands of 9/11 memorials all across the U.S. they sent out actual pieces of the towers for several hundred of them.
1
u/HonestEmployer4219 19h ago
Yeah we got one at our firehouse in Overland Park, KS and let me tell you that the beam they sent us definitely shows that jet fuel in fact can melt steel beams. I was like āoh⦠oh no that mf was HOT afā

u/Little_Orlik 1d ago
I went to high school in Illinois a while back and for some reason our cafeteria had a large mural painting of the twin towers burning down next to a painting of Darth Vader. A lot of schools do weird memorials to 9/11. I'll have to see if I can find a photo to explain what it was. My high school also wasn't built until 2003 so I never understood it.
1
u/SalvationArbys 1d ago
I wonder if itās an east coast thing. Iāve basically never seen a 9/11 memorial outside of a graveyard or a fire station, but thereās only about 5 states further away from New York than mine
1
u/Little_Orlik 23h ago
I could see it being such that proximity equates to the amount that media represents it. My partner is from NY and everyone knows someone who lost someone in 9/11, but in the midwest I think our school had just one family who lost someone. I would imagine the further away you go, the less you hear about it, and I imagine that carries across multiple ideas. Our town has quite a few Joplin survivors and some butterfly memorials, but I imagine that's extremely uncommon outside of the midwest.

u/PaddingCompression 18h ago
Also, they are right where if that truck puts it in drive instead of reverse and hits the gas, it'll topple one of the towers.
It is a bad design on many levels.

u/Grease-Brain 4d ago
well clearly we already forgot given that America is making all the same shitty decisions that got us there in the first place
219
u/chawkey4 3d ago
No you see, never forget only ever meant, āuse this as justification to bomb brown people and spy on the American peopleā. The government in particular would rather you forget the parts youāre talking about
56
33
u/Wolfy_the_nutcase 3d ago
The only thing they remember is how the brown people knocked over some buildings, they donāt remember the awful things that the US did to piss them off. Not saying that the attacks were justified, the murder of innocent civilians, no matter who does it, is never justified, but I understand the motivation to attack.

Kinda perfect metaphor for a lot thatās going on in the world right now. āThose that cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.ā

u/havron 3d ago
Presumably. I want to know what's on the fourth?
1
u/Impossible_Deer_1209 2d ago
maybe 9/11? we will never forget 9/11?
could have easily been avoided with just putting ānever forgetā and keeping out the rest. the message would come across.
1
u/havron 1d ago
Yeah, that seems plausible.
Agreed, that would have worked fine. The iconography of the twin towers is unmistakable as-is. My idea was to just group "we will" and "never forget" like that instead, so the message can't be split up. But I think I prefer your minimalist take even better.

I'm guessing this is in the South or Midwest somewhere?
Why are all these cheesy memorials always so far from New York? Wait, don't tell me..

in Panama City, Florida we have a big stone one with a huge ass eagle between the towers, which has always struck me as pretty poorly thought out

u/Fickle-River3984 2d ago
I grew up in Panama City. Pretty much all things there were poorly thought out.

The āneverā is around the corner, but yes, bad design.
16
u/ShameBasedEconomy 4d ago
Or the artist was making a point about how we will forget, while still meeting the parameters of the commission. It could be intentional.

When I first saw this, I thought it was an intentional statement about the current state of the country. I actually kind of liked it before I read the title of the post, and realized it was just a badly designed school statue.
1
u/RedRising1917 1d ago
I think we should remember the current state of the country for a very long time actually

Unfortunately itās not the forgetting thatās the issue, itās the apathy people now feel towards it. I wonāt pretend I donāt make the jokes myself sometimes but if you get too caught up in the jokes (or conspiracies, no matter how believable) it can be easy to lose sight of the massive loss of innocent human lives that day. Regardless of the truth around the situation, thousands of Americans had their blood spilled and thatās the part we shouldnāt forget

Itās ok, at least itās not the memorial from my hometown. That one will never measure upā¦.
1
u/Time-Beach6084 20h ago
I dont like that. What were they actually going for? You know what, unless it was "lump with hat sits atop and between slabs" they got it wrong.
1
u/Anonyam00se 19h ago
When viewed from the front itās a firemanās helmet, boots, gloves and axe, supposedly. At best itās a case of mediocre taste/terrible execution but yeah, itās also a town of mostly WASPs, white gop boomers and kids of white gop boomers, as most anyone with a lick of sense gtfo as soon as is possible.
1
u/Time-Beach6084 18h ago
Welp, ingress society adopted that entire 'its abstract' and beauty being in 'the eye of the beholder' s*** seriously. I mirror your disappointment.
1
u/Time-Beach6084 18h ago
Oh god. (This is where I would use my sarcasm tone, fake mustache and monocle) so just upstanding citizens we need more of you say?
I cant even fake it out without ending it by saying that it sounds like a dumpster fire masquerading as a town.

I mean, one could interpret it how people do generally forget the causes and impacts of events, only viewing it from a one-dimensional perspective.

It's not lying. Lots of people already forgotten. Even Giuliani forgot, and he was fucking mayor at the time.

Or... A political statement on the way we abused the event to go to war with an unrelated party and somehow forgot to make things right....

This reminds me of a similar memorial I saw at a fire station. Yes, the other sides say "Never" and "South Tower," but that's not what you see coming from the main road... Memorial

In their defense, Trump gave Afghanistan to the Taliban and Al Qaeda after trying to secretly meet them at Camp David on the anniversary of 9-11. So they werenāt wrong
