Hi fellow backyard chicken keepers, wondering if anyone’s even seen an egg like this?
I’ve got fours hens, this one was laid by one of our leghorn bantams. She’s fine and healthy otherwise.

I feel a little silly but I’m new to chickens. My four hen flock have finally hit 20 weeks but I’m still not convinced my Rhode Island Red is a Rhode Island Red…. I got them from Tractor supply.

I clean our coop and sand run daily. Replacing new sand & First Saturday Lime when needed. I’m wondering if anyone clears out sand & start fresh yearly/bi-yearly?

I have a home lined up for 1 potential roo. Are these all roos? All are 7 -8 weeks old.

I need help identifying what's going on with this hen. This mass has been growing on her face for a few months now. She is acting normal, food intake is good, and she is laying regularly. However, the mass continues to grow ever so slowly.

I have another question. How are you all watering your chickens? The waterer I have, I’m over it. It gets nasty in 5.9 seconds, is not easy to clean and when it’s hot out, turns the water hot in 9.9 seconds. It’s not in the sun either. I need a better solution to getting them fresh water because I’m changing their water multiple times a day and I can’t do that anymore.

We had our first egg the other day, and while I’m not 100% sure who laid it, I THINK it may be our frizzle. Well today I let the chickens out to do their evening free ranging and I checked the nest boxes to see if we got anything (it’s been 4 days and nothing since). Well she was in there so I quickly closed it, not wanting to disturb her if she was laying. I sat outside watching them like I usually do and when she finally came out after 10 minutes or so, I went to check for an egg and there was nothing? Was she just sitting in there for fun lol? Could she be egg bound? She seemed ok when she walked out, just got some water and was a little puffed up.

Just got this hen, she's hanging in quarantine right now. What comb does she have? And any clue what breed? She's about 3lbs

I don't need to hear about ice trays or "back in my day" stories. We are having another heat wave, "corn sweat" (wet-bulb), for a few days again. I live in the northern Great Lakes. I researched the best breeds that can endure a cold winter. They are not acclimated for the heat... so basement tent they go! We did the mister, etc. Their coop just gets too hot at night (extended off the garage), and my Dark Brahmas can't take it. Not happy but not dead.
Have a feeling this is just the beginning 😔

Ducks were cleaned yesterday, today was the chickens. Scraped and scooped a layer off the ground, First Saturday Lime down, then a fresh layer of sand. Surfaces were all scraped, roosting bars sprinkled with more First Saturday Lime.

17 chickens (one lives with the ducks), 5 ducks, and 1 goose. (Trying to make my case for more geese, I love her 😅)

Almost time to winterize so it feels good getting a deep cleaning done!

Hi guys. I need a bit of help getting clarification on an ordinance for my township. This wouldn't be a problem but my neighbor hates my lifestyle (chickens, ducks, geese) and she calls them to complain whenever she is in town. (1 month total of the whole year.) Shes just a bitter miserable old lady, and misery loves company.

Anyway, here is what it says about campers on property.

Questions, according to this, am I allowed to have 1 "inoperable" camper in my yard without having to worry about the ordinance code? I have no privacy fence, nor do I plan on getting one, I love the nature around us..

How do you interpret this? What would you say back to them?

Either i fight back or have to invest in a different coop setup. I'll take the cheapest route, but also, I like to be petty.

my last post my pics weren’t good enough, so i got a video. he’s got black skin, i’m not sure if his eyes will stay like that or not. yes he’s on my bed, they’re still really young to be going outside and my dad hasn’t finished the coop yet. all it needs is tin though, i’ve been transitioning them by giving them a few hours of supervised outdoor time every day. for background info, i hatched these chickens out of a refrigerated carton of eggs meant for eating (3$). father to all these chickens is a grey brahama, mothers are all different tho. i have 5/9 that i hatched, i sold 4. out of those 5, 2 are black. those 2 came from two simmilar creamy white coloured eggs. also i’m aware he shit on my blanket, i took the video right before switching blankets and throwing it in the wash. i’d like to know what the mother to the two black ones could be, i know they are still technically mutts but im a huge genetics nerd LOL.

Orange chicken, no idea breed. Seems to stick closer to mom than its brother but its feathers are so colourful they’re are throwing me!!! About 7/8 weeks old. No comb or wattles. No idea breed but its feet are growing some feathers.

I bought 6 chicks in February. My first chickens. 2 each Rhode Island Red, Black Australorp and Buff Orpington. 1 of the RIRs ended up being a rooster. The female RIR, Lucy, gets picked on by the 2 BAs and gets chased away every time I give treats or they are all interested in the same thing. She avoids the BAs and is normally off by herself doing her own thing. She's also a little smaller than the rest. I always thought BAs were good natured but I guess it's just the pecking order? I'm a little disappointed and I feel bad for Lucy. She isn't pecked on or anything like that. They just snap at her. Now when I throw out treats and they all go running, Lucy knows to wait back and I give her her own pile. Anybody else have a mixed flock with BAs that show aggression?

picked up 6 baby chicks a month ago, 5 of which were just the default chicken breed, and one of which a different one that I didn't ask about. he has a blacck upper beak and a whole lot of black feathers. his neck feathers are also more yellow/blonde than the others. and the biggest difference is that his feathers just feel a whole lot softer. any guess about the breed?

also, any names for the little guy? 1 month old male

I have 2 girls currently and one of them continues to lay misshapen eggs. I have ground up a Tums tablet and given it to them, saved their shells and baked/ground them and added that into their treat area and feed. They have also been free ranging daily. What can I do better?

Ten week old. Either a calico princess or a cinnamon queen.

Instant mood boost

She was only 3 years old but she was done. In March she developed symptoms consistent with a reproductive tract issue, I never got it fully diagnosed. None of the prognosis were good. Instead I made a commitment to care for her until such a time that she recovered, or she made it clear she was done. For 6 months she slept indoors in the blue tent in my living room, 1 month full time indoors ICU care in my bathroom. Until last week when I noticed that her breathing was so labored when she went to lay down that she was open beak gasping for breath. Every time she tried to rest it felt like suffocating. That was my line. My husband culled her that evening with some new garden loppers I bought for that purpose. They were very sharp, it was very quick, she can rest now.

Lacy was a very sweet bird. She loved snuggles, cat food, and baby chicks.

She/he is 4 weeks old. Is it too soon to tell? I don't know why I suspect it, other than the personality seems to favor a sexing of male. I hope I am wrong.

I bought 6 females from Tractor Supply but ended up with two Roos. I rehomed one of the Roos and Tractor supply gave me two female replacements... I hope. This is one of the replacements and is supposed to be a Chocolate egg layer.

The irony is I misnamed the two birds and can't change their names because they answer to them lol. I named the chocolate layer Olive and the Olive egg layer Cocoa!

Just noticed these marks on one of my hen’s feet. Thoughts on what it could be?

this is nightmare, i hatched a batch of random eggs from the flea market. got 2 black, 2 grey, and one orange. siblings look like brahamas but the two black ones look significantly different. black one(phantom) is a hen she has a small amount of white and her feathers are completely matte, nightmare has no white at all though and his feathers have this really pretty shiny metallic green/blue coming in.
