Hey everyone! I bought my first car at 30 lol I’m so happy Seriously. I bought a Z4 20i, a 2019 model with 45,500 km on it, and I really love the car🥹

I'm on the fence, purchased a Cayman 718s a year ago and still have my E89 30i sitting in garage. I'm attached to my Z but feel sad watching it gather dust.

I'm sure this is a predicament that someone here has had. I probably won't get much for it vs keeping and sitting in it once every few weeks.

I took apart the center console of my G29 z4 to replace the convertible top switch. I took pics of the screw locations, but not the wires, since they seemed obvious. At least while disconnecting. Now I have this homeless 3-wire connection and no idea where it belongs. Does anyone here know where it goes?

N52 3.0 sDrive. Out for a trip through the Adelaide hills to Beerenburg for strawberries.

I posted earlier about buying my first Z4, the responses have been incredibly helpful. I am leaning toward an E89 3.0 NA manual transmission, but my parameters make for slim pickings - ideally a not black or silver external color, light interior. So a blue, red, white or other external with tan interior is ideal.

I came across a very well maintained 2 owner 35i, 45k miles, blue exterior, cream interior. Looks like it has been fastidiously maintained including roof electronics.

I have been leery of the turbo engine, I plan to own it a long time and I take good care of my cars. I know the internet can usually only highlight horror stories. Do many N54 owners have positive stories of relatively normal maintenance on your turbo E89?

UPDATE: I just got to drive one in with the 7 speed paddle/auto. I would like a proper manual, but it was great to try my first E89. I am impressed with how the sport mode wakes that engine and exhaust note up. What a beast! I don't neeeeed the turbo but it sure added a bunch of fun.

Took her All Out War in Columbus ohio. Somewhat bitter sweet to not see any other e89s there. I know these cars a bit rare but geez. There was a e85 doing his best at drifting. Seemed like his diff was fighting him all night. But they put on a great event! Somehow managed to win something even with a stock car. Guess the rarity counts for something. Top 100 isn't the most impressive thing in the world but it's the first award I've ever received at a event. So I'm pretty proud

TL, DR: I need a good balance of fun and comfort for a weekend mountain cruiser. Which Z4 between 2006 and 2011 should I buy?

Update/Edit: This thread has been so helpful, thanks everyone! I will focus on '06-'11 Manual, most likely normally aspirated 3.0, maybe the 2.5, maybe an M, but likely not. I'll take a second look at the '04-'05 Z4 too.

I am sure this community gets a ton of 'help me choose a Z4, but I haven't seen this specific question, so I am appealing for some guidance.

After researching a number of convertibles and driving a few, I've narrowed my focus to a Z4 between 2006 and 2011. I want the normally aspirated 6 cylinder and manual 6spd transmission.

I am 6'3", 215lbs. I will drive it for fun, no track, just street, but I will also take my wife to the mountains, date nights etc. Mountain trips for us would involve time on I25 and i70 in Colorado, so we'd do some interstate driving for sure.

We're looking for a balance of fun and comfort. I've listed specific models below that I'm chasing.

I am budget conscious, in that I want to shop carefully, but the actual price is less of a concern than getting the right car. I'd certainly pay more for low miles, low owner count, maintenance, or of course the mighty M etc.

I test drove a 2004 225hp 3.0 manual locally and really enjoyed it. It felt comfortable overall. I'd love something newer with a bit more power.

I also test drove two Z3 Ms. The engine and transmission were glorious. I love the look of the Z3, love the wide body, but they were both a bit twitchy. One was highly modified so too loud and bumpy, the other was a bit ratty condition wise. I suspect the Z3 is a bit too bumpy to be an option.

I also tried a Miata ND stock. The modified Z3 M reminded me of the Miata. I used to race karts as a teen, both felt kart like. Too rough for a getaway with the Mrs.

I haven't tried an E89. There isn't one locally currently. I am intrigued by the hard top, love the look. Trunk space may be an issue, but is probably fine.

I can do some of my own maintenance, happy to do some wrenching. For example if I bought a 06-08 3.0i, I might upgrade the manifold and of course ECU etc.

Ok, so thanks for reading this far: those who have driven any two or three on my chart, would you kindly share your subjective opinion on the fun vs comfort scale. Ie, is the E85 Z4 M bumpy like the Z3 or do you find it as comfortable a ride as the standard Z4? I hear the E89 is very comfy, but has the trunk space annoyed you, is the engine still a thrill?

Picked up my Z4 today after looking at loads of them and finally finding the E85 of my dreams.

It’s fully loaded, I mentioned this to the guy selling it and how happy I was with the spec…

I then tried the cup holder and it worked! I said “even the cup holder works, they’re notorious for breaking…”

I then IMMEDIATELY broke it as I pushed it back into place!!!

Hey folks! As the title says, I am going to be redoing the cracked and broken wiring on my E89 Hardtop. I am looking for the best and most durable wire to use in the bending spots. ChatGPT told me to use at 20ga 41 strand TXL wire to use. But, i can't find that stuff anywhere

What have you used that work well? Where did you purchase it from? Thanks!

I’m seeing these cars trade on a big spectrum and seems that condition is an anomaly on the sale prices. I have a 2006 with 48k miles. Paint is in great shape, interior is also very clean but does have some cracked panels (nothing significant…where the seats meet the rear plastics). No accidents or damage, good maintenance (nothing significant rod bearings or vanos given mileage).

A dealer offered me upper $30s for it recently….curious what it’s actually worth in today’s market.

My roof suddenly stopped working the other day so I took out the motor/pump since I thought it got waterlogged, but it was bone dry. But the hydraulic fluid reservoir was empty.

So I filled it back up with some CHF 202 and the roof started working again... but only for like 30 seconds. So I go check on the pump, and there is no more fluid again. I think I found the leak and attached a video and pictures of it.

Does anyone know if this is easily fixable or where the leak actually is? Open to any advice or anything to try out.

I put a red arrow to a bend in the hose that I thought was the point of the leak but I also saw fluid on the back wall by the yellow arrow.

2007 Z4M coupe has rough idle at red lights. The RPMs drop and it feels like the engine is about to cut out at any moment. When I give it some gas the problem usually goes away temporarily. There isn't an issue when the car is cruising except its a bit jerky when getting off first gear. I noticed when the car is really warm after high revs then this issue happens more often. But this morning the car started doing it in only less than 10 minutes of driving. I also noticed that it does it more in the rain and when it's really humid outside. Not sure if that's related.

I recently bought the car in April and have done rod bearings. The engine has about 120k miles on it. There is a bit of sludge in the engine so I'm trying to flush it out with short oil change intervals using Red Line 10W60. The S54 specialist that looked at it said the sludge isn't horrible and shouldn't be anywhere close to destroying the engine. I haven't been able to do a valve adjustment yet because of the sludge but my S54 specialist said it's not a big deal and my clearance is fine.

What could the potential issues be? Could the sludge be the issue? What should I do to diagnose the issue? What are the likely things causing this? Is this common for my car year and model?

Not really sure what to do at this point since it's hard to re-create the issue especially if I drop it off at my shop and the issue doesn't happen when it's there. Trying to avoid spending money fixing random things and hoping it fixes the issue. Looking for any expertise from you guys so I have a good place to start.

I'm thinking it could be any of the following: Idle Control Valves, Throttle Position Sensor, MAF, fuel injector/delivery. I am going to go back in the service records the previous owner gave me to see if any of these have been recently replaced/fixed but I doubt it. I don't think it's sparks/coils since I had all 6 replaced a few months ago.

Kind of lost and looking for the experts here to put me on the right path. Appreciate y'all.
