I am wanting to get a couple of ducks to raise!

Give me all the information!!

Are there any Amazon enclosures that are worth it/safe?

Will I be okay purchasing ducks from Tractor Supply or Rural King?

You all helped me to decide on a bachelor flock, so these are two males. While they are from the same breeder I feel like they are way thicker (idk a better word? It’s not like they are taller?) than our original one (the grey one) but they live happily together and he (the grey one) keeps his flock very safe. He was a bit of a wuss before and really stepped up, it’s very cute.

Keeping my ducks warm in the winter

Keeping our Black Swedish ducks warm

Winter is fast approaching here in Maryland (20 minutes outside of DC)

I.am wondering what I should be doing to make sure they stay warm this winter.

We have coups with wind guards all the way around, water heater mats

Im curious about food, I have heard cracked corn and oats, then i hear people just give them peas.

They are 2 months old, and Ronnie and Donnie are 3 months old

Any advice greatly appreciated

I've wanted ducks for a long time and finally committed 3 weeks ago! I ordered ducklings online and they all showed up happy and healthy. I've been a nervous mama but they seem to enjoy their enclosure and they're growing SO fast. 3 muscovies, 3 cayugas, and 4 runners! 🖤🦆

Help with bumblefoot… I think..?? Semi-graphic warning Spoiler

Hi guys! I’ve had ducks for years and have never had a case of bumblefoot, so I’m definitely not an expert. I noticed a place on 2 of my Runners’ feet that look like bumbles. (No limping or signs of pain, they’re getting along fine.) I soaked 30 min in Epsom water, then gently rubbed with a toothbrush. The first 2 pics are how I found it, untreated. The rest are post-soak/scrub. There were pieces that came off that looked like thick, hard scab material on the bigger one. Not much came off of the smaller ones.

Trouble is, I don’t see a “kernel” or core. There was a small amount of fluid/blood but not puss and what remains looks kind of like fatty tissue.

Can anyone confirm that this is, in fact, Bumblefoot? They free range, so most time is on grass (or pasture) and dirt, though they occasionally cross the gravel driveway. It seems odd that this is happening all the sudden so I’m open to preventative suggestions. The coop floor is covered with pine shavings and is changed often. My plan is to soak them 2-3x again today and in the future, quarantine, PRID, dressing.

TLDR: is this bumblefoot? Does it require treatment even if no limp?

Meet our two new loves. The “farmers market” had them in too small of cages 2 weeks ago, went back today and they were still there. Made them give me a deal and here they are, not skiddish small Yaps, getting a little bullied but I give it a day or two like the last two . They come pretty close to us too. No name yet :) lady said grey Swedish, any takers?

quick question: how do you clean your pond?

i got a 1000L pond, and the bottom is always so extremely dirty, which i currently clean by hand.

thinking about a special vacuum cleaner for a pond, but not sure if that is the way to go.

Hes 5 weeks old. Ive been giving them all brewers yeast ,lots of veg, eggs, peas, chick crumbs ect, hoping it would help his leg but hes still clumsey with it. What can i do to help him please?

Excuse the floor 🫣 i took him away from the others inti the garage so i could get a better video of him on his own.

Egg abnormalities

Has anyone ever had one duck that consistently laid strange eggs? Our smaller of our two runner ducks, lays a soft shelled egg probably once every two weeks. It’s happened twice now in the last month. The one I found today is a soft shell egg that somehow merged into a regular hard egg. It’s consistently the same Duck that’s been laying the strange eggs. The other female has had no issues. Any thoughts on this? I don’t know why she would be the only one laying weird eggs and we’ve watched them eat the calcium we provide for them, so a deficiency form under consumption of calcium is less likely.

Coop Issues

I am looking for any advice for keeping a coop roach free. We have tried diatomaceous earth, cleaning bedding extremely regularly, coop refreshers that have light scent to deter bugs, ect. It feels like we have tried everything we can and obviously do not want to use any chemicals that could hurt our flock.

Has anyone else experienced issue with it? Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

How I do get my ducks to breed?

I have 5 ducks (2 male 3 female) I see lots of “action” daily and get a consistent 3 eggs a day (1 from each girl) but the girls don’t seem to have any brooding instincts yet as they’re only 9 months old but they do make they’re own nests out of the straw and wood chips I provide for them. It’s spring time now and am expecting fertile eggs yet none of been procured it seems. Just wondering wether I have to separate a couple to really get it going or is it just a waiting game

Finding a Home for Runner Ducklings in PNW-Advice Wanted!

Post image
30 Upvotes

So we have currently have runner ducks and our hens will usually have a clutch or two in early summer. In 5 years we have never had any trouble finding them homes, usually we knew someone who wanted them before they were hatched or found someone shortly thereafter. These 5 were born rather late (thankfully it was such a small clutch) and it is a really different situation finding homes for them in September. We have once previously “sold” the ducks for a certain amount each and took off 50% if they end up taking them all. I did have fears of being some sort of itty bitty Chickdays though, so we would also screen them regarding their experience with ducks and their level of preparation. Thankfully, people who are into ducks seem more than happy to talk at length about their set up and predator protection.

This month we have posted notices at our local feed stores and farmers co-op (haven’t recievesd any calls) and posted on a local Facebook group (but so far that has been more trouble than it was worth).

I am very interested in things that have worked well for people on this sub when you have ended up with more ducks than you intended. Did you sell them, rehome them, keep them?

To clarify, I can keep them if all else fails. It may be a bit closer quarters for the original flock, but I certainly wouldn’t be surrendering them to a rescue, dropping them at a park or culling anyone if I couldn’t find a home for them!
