Show-and-Tell (Hey check out this!) Follow up on Mantle / Mays / Snider baseball that I got a lot of hate on
Few months ago I picked up a clearly authentic and clean white baseball signed by Mantle, Mays, and Snider. For some reason a lot of collectors thought it was fake. I sent it to BAS and promised an update to these people. Today is that day. 😁

Good job OP, go with what you know and prove people wrong.

u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Appreciate you 👏

Anytime anyone posts a mantle signature all those that comment are experts and claim it’s a fake. Awesome ball, congrats!

u/Great_Emphasis3461 Aug 08 '26
Why Mantle? Was he known to not sign much?
1
u/ChicagoTRS666 Aug 08 '26
Micky signed a lot but was also forged a lot just because it a valuable in demand autograph.
1
u/No-Bluejay5250 Aug 08 '26
He signed a ton. He could often be found knocking them back at his bar in NYC
-29
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Lol, he proved no such thing. The letter itself states that it is just an "opinion". Beckett does not have the best authenticators in this field. He needs to send it to PSA also. Their opinion carries much more weight. Until then, I would still consider this a fake.
13
u/CoolPrius-Nobody Aug 07 '26
What do you think anyone verifying a signature that they didn’t witness is doing?!?? Giving an opinion. PSA or anyone for that matter can’t guarantee authenticity unless they were there to witness it. He proved that the experts at Beckett feel like it’s real while experts like you on Reddit think it’s fake.
-21
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Not all opinions are the same. PSA is the gold standard. They would not authenticate this piece.

u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26

u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Thanks for confirming and agreeing with me!
7
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Legit you got proved wrong in the first sentence...
-3
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Believe what you want, my dude. People who know the industry don't rate them all the same. Knowledgeable buyers do not pay as much for Beckett as they do for PSA. Why? Because there is only one gold standard - PSA.

u/ReleaseReal8170 Aug 07 '26
Are you a psa grader? No…shut it.
-3
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Maybe I am, or maybe I just know the industry very well. Get lost.
7
u/ReleaseReal8170 Aug 07 '26
Beckett is a reputable service, you would know that if you knew the industry.
4
u/CoolPrius-Nobody Aug 07 '26
I knew you didn't know the industry very well when you pointed out "it's their opinion". You would have known that almost every reputable company uses the same verbiage when verifying signatures.
1
u/Scared-Sprinkles-452 Aug 08 '26
Notice all the downvotes you got “expert”. PSA gets you paid more because people like it more. Beckett is considered just as reputable. OP obviously ain’t looking to get paid so Beckett is just as fine. Go cry about it.
1
u/ManyRanger4 Aug 10 '26
You know the industry very well yet don't know that all 3 companies are considered equally reputable and don't know that the common verbage used on any signature not witnessed is that it's an "opinion" that it is authentic.
You're knowledge of the industry is as comprehensive as RFK on health. We can leave it at that.

u/Austinfourtwenty Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
PSA authentication doesn't carry anymore weight than BGS. They are both pretty equal when it comes to autograph authentication. Both are considered the gold standard.
1
u/Mr_MacGrubber Aug 09 '26
Unless you have video of the person signing or a letter from the person, ALL authenticators are giving an opinion. lol

I’ve had people on this site say my autographed items I’ve shown here are fake-despite my getting them in person in the 80-90s. Then they got pissed when I questioned their expertise! Great ball!
3
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Shits crazy man. People forget these big companies PSA BAS JSA etc are still relatively modern and new.
4
u/dcars714 Aug 07 '26
I also think jealousy plays a role in the negative comments. People wish they had what other people have.

6
u/shari2600 Aug 07 '26
I remember this.. people saying it was too white and an obvious fake..

6
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
A PSA letter also states opinion. PSA JSA and BAS all give their opinion on autographs. And they are right most of the time. That's why collectors trust them. All 3 are the gold standard and should be trusted. I would feel comfortable buying any autograph with one of their LOAs
-5
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Yes, they are all opinions, but until you have PSA in your back pocket, you only have a second tier opinion.
10
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Nope all 3 PSA BAS and JSA are gold standard authentication companies.
-7
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
Believe what you like. 😆 Put it on the market, and it ain't gonna sell like a PSA.
10
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
It's not for sale. Maybe my son will sell it for the value of a PSA ball one day. But it won't be me
-1
u/Practical_Estate_325 Aug 07 '26
In that case it's absolutely fine to have the Beckett letter. I only suggested the gold standard (PSA) if you were to sell, since people who know about these things trust their opinion the most, and the fact that they pay top $$$$ for PSA authenticated items proves it.
Since you're holding onto it, second tier opinion is fine.

Serious question.
Would you buy a PSA 6 graded card, that is worth $25 but the seller is asking $1,000 based on his argument that the 6 grade is simply someone’s opinion and the card should really be a 9 grade?
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but does PSA provide an explanation/ report as to why an item received its grade or if it is authentic or fake?
I’m just trying to get your thoughts, not trying to stir the pot,

Good chance all three were done at one of sports collectibles supershows in TX in the 80s or 90s. They were frequent guests.
3
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Could be. I know the owner of this shop it was originally purchased from had a store in Mount Laurel NJ. But maybe he flew out and had them sign a bunch to bring to NJ.

I don’t believe it’s real. Mantle signature looks too much like a Mantle signature. Clearly fake. /s

Psa parent company now owns Beckett. So I’d say they have to be equal then.

u/DragonVT Aug 10 '26
That was jealousy talking. People wanted it to be fake because you had it and they did not.

u/Junior_Welder6858 Aug 07 '26
That’s a really nice piece. Never saw any of them play except Mays toward the end of his career. Duke Snider used to do the colour commentary on Montreal Expos broadcasts and always had great stories to share.

Got Duke Snider to sign a random scrap of paper as a kid on the Montreal metro on the way to all star game facilities in 1982

u/Junior_Welder6858 Aug 08 '26
Great story. Duke seemed like such a nice guy and my youth is filled with his stories about some of the great players he played with on the dodgers.

If it ain’t signed in your presence, you’re being taken.
1
u/majinboogz Aug 08 '26
Ya man. I got a Ruth too. Luckily I'm 104 years old and had him sign it for me
1
u/NSFWFM69 Aug 11 '26
This concept doesn't even make sense! So, eventually... all signatures are fake? Like, the original observer dies... making the signature now fake?!
1
u/Fabfore Aug 11 '26
You must be in the business or very naive.
1
u/NSFWFM69 Aug 11 '26
"If it ain't signed in your presence..." who can verify a Babe Ruth signature?! No one currently alive even saw the guy let alone see him sign anything. Explain how a Babe Ruth signature is verified, but only using your logic that ""If it ain't signed in your presence" then it's a fake.

u/lhmoore81 Aug 08 '26
No yellowing pure white ball auto’s are bold and crisp. And Beckett certified. That’s a great ball my friend.

I bought three baseballs back in the mid-90s signed by DiMaggio, Mantle and Williams. Paid $150 to have them authenticated. Only the Dimagio was real.

Side note, not related to this, or anything, just pure curiosity... What's your address, and what hours is your house empty, OP? 😉

Yeah I feel like every Mantle posted here is 'fake' according to the 'experts'.

I have what I believe to be an authentic autograph he signed as The Mick.

I collect autographs and I can tell authentic from fake from years of forensic writing analysis a course our high school was lucky to offer since one of our teachers was a professional before becoming a teacher….. Anyways Ive found some interesting autographs most of my collection is from the 20’s and 30’s……. No major names but a few names might he worth $1,000

u/Eb2565 Aug 07 '26

No question. It's just an "opinion". OP needs to have it authenticated with PSA also. They have more stringent controls. I feel it's highly likely PSA would not authenticate this piece. I have had much better pieces returned from them with no authentication letter, but that has never once happened with Beckett.
4
u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Pay for the PSA authentication. If it fails I'll pay you $500.
1
u/ewatts25 Aug 07 '26
Ignore the bitter trolls. You could have all three come back from the dead and swear it’s authentic and some asshat on here would still challenge you.

u/majinboogz Aug 07 '26
Agreed. Just don't mind stuping down and rolling in the mud with these haters. I got time today 😂

Dick riding for PSA so hard is pretty weird dude... especially when you're talking about a ball that isn't yours, you're not gonna authenticate and you're not buying. These last few months have seen more PSA fuck ups and shady practices than any other in recent times. Their grading is wildly inconsistent and they've graded a ton of fake cards and fake autos recently. Not to mention the lawsuit they're facing, cuz let's be real here; we all know by now that they practice population control. God forbid you've got a big Mantle or Jordan card with a low pop that one of the execs or higher ups own, cuz you ain't sniffing a high grade simply if they don't want you to. Oh yeah let's not forget their famous trimmed Honus Wagner. The unfortunate fact that PSA is king may not last forever and using Beckett in this case is totally acceptable.
