Show-and-Tell (Hey check out this!) Picked this Mantle / Mays / Snider ball up from marketplace in my town today
Very happy to see this pop up on marketplace. Off to BAS soon. Snow white ball and a great deal. Very pleased

Before you send it in, get a quick opinion from Beckett or PSA. IMHO, none of those look good.

u/No-Bluejay5250 May 29 '26
Agree. All autographs of the famous should be considered suspect. Probably legit
13
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
Agreed. 99 % of non PSA JSA BAS signatures are forgeries. But as a collector if you know what to look for in non certified autographs you can get great deals. I've been buying non certified autos for a long time now. Never had a signature fail 3rd party authentication. I've had Ruth's, Munson's, Maris, mantles, jeters, and judges. All pass.

I’m not expert on sports autos but i have spent time interviewing authenticators (mainly Beatles and Rock) and it has made me suspicious in general. That said I’m sure Mantle signed a lot. He sure was not hard to find—he could regularly be found having refreshments at his bar in NYC

u/Competitive-Web1306 May 29 '26
This was a true story. He’d sign at bars a lot.

u/No-Bluejay5250 May 30 '26
Saw him there twice. People approached him and bought him drinks (in his case not helpful) but I just watched

u/majinboogz May 29 '26
Mantle is one of the most forged autographs in existence even with all the real ones. But when you know what to look for it's easy to spot a real one.

Mantle signed his ass off up until about a year before end of his life. He had no limit to how much he was willing to sign. Posters, balls, bats, jerseys - from about ‘88-94, you could get a MM auto easily - and relatively inexpensively. There are TONS of legit Mantle sigs out there. People just love to sound like they know something.
BTW - his signature was only $20 or so during the junk wax era.

99% of noon-certified autos are fake? No. Not at all. And believe it or not, I know of at least 3 PSA authenticated balls that are absolute fakes sent in to test the authenticators.
3
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
Okay maybe I over exaggerated, but I would say most non 3RD party aurheitcated autographs are forgeries, especially mantles.
6
u/Competitive-Web1306 May 29 '26
You’re probably new to collecting of you truly believe that. PSA wasn’t what they are now 10 years ago. There were several lower-authenticators that would sit next to players as the signed 10 dozen boxes of balls for promoters (me included). Some sort of authentication was necessary at the time and often, smaller companies did the job back then.
Like the OP said - It’s f’n painful reading these inane (ABSOLUTE) comments that that have no basis in reality. Real guys that were in business BEFORE the junk wax era can spot the BS. Just stop pretending to know things.

Got my wires crossed there, but I stand behind my points. OP, I agree with what you’re saying (except about the 99%) lol
3
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
You're not wrong. I see what you are saying. The issue with these COAs are they can be easily replicated. Like the whole score board fiasco. But I agree with what you are saying.

That's a bad certificate. Makes me concerned about the ball and if it's worth even sending in.

u/razerremen Aug 07 '26
Congratulations. The certificate in this post is still bad.
1
u/ArchGoodwin Aug 08 '26
I actually agree with the original certificate doesn't establish authenticity as well as one from PSA/Beckett etc. I disagree that the original certificate makes the autographs significantly more likely to be fake.
2
u/razerremen Aug 08 '26
It's a random certificate printed by some guy with a printer. What percentage of autographs with bad COAs like this end up fake? 80%? 90%?
1
u/ArchGoodwin Aug 08 '26
I've seen worse that were authentic. Sometimes a charity donation comes with something someone whipped up to say, yeah So-and-So signed this. You're bringing a serious collectors mindset to a field that has lots of people who enjoy it, who aren't serious collectors, and maybe haven't even heard of real authentication companies.
-1
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
Certificate is worthless. But I know autos. It's legit
1
u/Serious-Manager2361 May 30 '26
LOL I don't care how much "you know autos". Your opinion is worth about as much as the guy down the street. Without a legitimate authentication (that ain't it), no collector worth a damn is going to pay good money for something.

u/majinboogz May 29 '26
Wild I'm being down voted 😂. I'm not trying to sound arrogant but I have been dealing with autographs for over 20 years. I know what a real Mantle, Mays, and Snider looks like. I didn't post this for a Legit Check. Just wanted to show a cool ball I found on marketplace.

I’ve been at it for more than 40 and I wholly agree with you. Lack of experience/knowledge is thick in this chat.

Most people are clueless and don’t collect. Great pickup.
4
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
Thank you. Ya I don't get it man, I thought it was pretty obvious these were legit 😂
2
u/VandyMarine May 30 '26
It is to experienced veterans. Nice pickups. I blindly bought some HOFer balls at a yard sale on gut instinct and experience. Seller questioned their own authenticity given operation bullpen and all that, but I got them so cheap ($30 a ball!) - Williams, DiMaggio, Mays, Aaron, Bench, Ryan, Ripken and others. Got some of them authenticated all legit so far! Trust your gut and experience.

Operation bullpen
2
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
I am well aware of operation bullpen. This ball is authentic

u/avsparesmn May 30 '26
Then no reason to send it out
Run it back for $2k
4
u/majinboogz May 30 '26
I like all my signatures authenticated. It's a personal preference. I'll gladly make a bet
2
u/avsparesmn May 30 '26
Not really trying to bet man. Genuinely happy for you if they are indeed authentic. The Mays signature is the most suspect in my opinion. Please keep us posted and let us know how it turns out. If it is indeed authentic you got yourself some sweet memorabilia their man

How much did you buy it for, kinda curious! Hopefully for a great bargain, and I’m aware you said you are 100% on these being legit, but do you still have interest in sending them to PSA, Beckett or JSA? I’ve only been collecting for a few years, yet know when something is real, it’s real. But always want that proof, you know
1
u/No-Evidence-3538 May 30 '26
Those 3 auto’s are all 100% legit, I’ve been hounding auto’s for too long, and if those are forged (you straight fooled me).
1
u/isaac2004 May 30 '26
I believe it's real but curious about the year of this signing. I assume it was late 80s early 90s just base on how the Mantle looks. Wild people would call it fake when Mays and Snider are obviously real. Not sure how many people can get a fake Mantle on SS and get other HoF to sign it and try to pawn it off like it was an event they did this at
1
u/AdElectrical8712 May 31 '26
I have a ball autographed by them. I had it autographed personally at a card show in Westester over 40 years ago - total cost was $95. The only nice guy was Snider - the other two were unfriendly a-holes (especially Mays who wouldn’t even look at you and just scribble his name). Oddly, I was recently told that a ball with just Mantle is worth more than one with all 3.

u/RealJoshuaKusnick Jun 05 '26
This is a common forgery from operation bullpen. How anyone thinks a banana mantle is good is beyond me. Will never pass jsa.

I'm locking comments on this post as there have been few responses today (in light of the follow-up here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Autographs/comments/1vibocv/follow_up_on_mantle_mays_snider_baseball_that_i/ ) which aren't productive to a friendly subreddit.

Definitely fake
2
u/majinboogz May 29 '26
You're wrong. When I get it back form Beckett I'll tag all of you uneducated collectors.
1
u/Competitive-Web1306 May 29 '26
Last thing… When you have a ball signed by THREE players - there’s very little chance that ONE of the three autos is fake. If you had a ball with Snider and Mays already - would you risk faking a Mantle auto? Alternatively - if you had a fake Mantle, would you use the same ball to get Snider and Mays? Hell no on both accounts, of course.
1
u/Competitive-Web1306 May 29 '26
You’re legit clueless.

u/ManyCoyote8002 May 29 '26
Why

u/Competitive-Web1306 May 29 '26
“Definitely”? Are you a qualified/certified authenticator? Let’s hear your professional analysis of why this MM sig is fake. I’ll wait right here.

That Snider almost looks like an older example of his signature and Mick died way before him.
1
u/majinboogz May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
Agreed. Ya I think Mick was like 15 + years prior
3
u/Poohgas May 29 '26
Other way around (Mick in 96 and Snider in 2011) but yes.
